Shadow Bison

It was an overcast day -- both good and bad. Good because the shadows weren't out, but bad because they still were. Even though they blended in more, to Shadow, they were still noticeable.

Having fled from another one of his father's tirades, the boy ran down a dirt road, stopping only when his lungs began to burn for air. Bent over, he tried to catch his breath, though he panicked at the sight of his own shadow. A sharp yelp escaped him as he recoiled back, tripping and falling flat onto his back in the middle of the road. Eyes shut tightly against the sudden wave of pain, he remained still, heart rate slowly quieting down. He wanted to just lie there, eyes closed, and never open them again. No more terrifying shadows, no more complaining from his father -- it would all be good if he could just make himself blind.

She had left the faeries quite early that day to go downstream and gather some fresh strawberries from the thicket that grew out of the mouth of the creek. A silky, smooth scarlet scarf in hand, Dimmer Cadieux trudged through deep mudholes and hopped over fallen logs blocking her way. Sadly, none of the faeries followed her as per usual; so, Dimmer was without company during her entire trek to the fruit.

Too bad that wasn't the case. Dimmer wasn't the kind of girl who needed attention at all times. In fact, she rather enjoyed being alone. Sure, the faeries made her feel safer than usual; but the girl still was accustomed to alone-time. And then this was interrupted by a small boy who appeared to be about her age falling to the ground only a few yards away from the woods in which she ran. The sight instantly frightened Dimmer, and she stumbled aside and landed in the creek bed with an audible splash.

Lying silently on the ground, eyes tightly shut, Shadow felt as though he were in a cocoon of darkness. There were no shadowy figures lurking, or the heinous shadows that stalked the every move of people wherever they went. For now, he was safe and everything was at peace. Nothing was going wrong....

Until he heard a splash.

Shadow's eyes shot open, and despite all the twisting shadows around him, he quickly scanned the area. Where had it come from? What was it? Hesitantly he got up, being sure to stay as quiet as he possibly could. The creek... Maybe it wasn't such a good idea, especially since the shadows of the trees were waving and dancing in the wind, seeming to mock him, but his little sense of curiosity was getting the better of him. Maybe it's an animal.... maybe a cow? I hope so. But what if it's a person? What if they're hurt? Braving the shade, the boy darted quickly over to where the creek was, being sure to steer clear of any darkness. He ended up, however, planting himself against a tree, looking down at the creek. Sure enough, there was a girl down there, lying in the water.

"Umm...." Shadow's voice was small and timid, wide eyes watching the girl's every move. "Are you alright...?"
