Oh gosh, oh no.. my hair is all tangled, my face is a mess..

That was the thought that repeated in Mercury's mind as she stalked through the open forest, now regretting her choice of retreating from her own District to explore another in hopes for some excitement. She looked a tad bit less then fabulous at that time, with her messed up hair and unclean face. She had no mirror, though as she ran her hand through her usually-perfect hair she could feel the tangles. She moved her hand to her face, and when she pulled it back she saw a hint of dirt resting on her spindly spider-like fingers. It's okay, it's okay.. you still look fantastic.. she told herself strongly, though there was still an obsessive part of her that couldn't drop the idea of an imperfection. The idea nagged at her mind uncontrollably for some time until she finally gave in and stopped near a small pond.

Glancing down at the disgusting dirt on both of her hands, she plunged them into the water before doing anything else. She rinsed them for minutes until she was sure that they were completely dirt free, and proceeded to her face. She cursed herself for forgetting the mirror that she usually kept in her pocket and rinsed her face off meticulously. The time it took for her to wash her face could probably seem ridiculous to any other person, but to her it barely seemed enough. She scrubbed away the dirt until her face felt almost raw, and then ran her damp fingers through her long, dark hair until every single tangle was gone. She had to look perfect; there was no other option.

Once she was finished perfecting her already oh-so-wonderful appearance, Mercury picked up her backpack, shook her hands out to rid them of some of the water, and moved forward again. It was not long until she was standing just outside the large fence that surrounded what she guessed was District Nine. It was a first for her- traveling outside of her own District- though she quite liked it. The open forest made her feel dangerous (hell, she always felt dangerous), excited even. She was breaking a law, and she loved it almost as much as she loved herself. Danger and excitement were extremely important to her, no matter what the consequences.

It was a long while until she finally reached the edges of a District- she had already been walking for a day or so- though her trip wasn't over yet. The large fence loomed above her, far too tall to climb and far too risky. She was all for danger, but climbing a barbed-wire fence that was at least 4 times her height was not something she particularly wanted to do, so she lazily walked until she found a space in the fence damaged enough for her to fit through. She pulled the damaged part of the fence back some and slipped through the space, congratulating herself for finally making it through into a District. Her pulse quickened happily as she lifted her head up and looked around, then knowing what District it was that she had just illegally entered. Unless she was mistaken, it was the hunting District, which she remembered to be District Nine.

Ooh, and they'll all be walking around with weapons.. Mercury thought to herself with a smile, driving her excitement level up another two notches. She wasn't quite sure yet what she was going to do or what she was going to say, though she did know that it was going to be a fun experience. Perhaps she would fight and test the skills of these so-called hunters, but perhaps not. She had to find someone first. Like a predator searching for prey, her cold, almost-dead-looking eyes scanned the trees and woods around her for any sign of movement, though she saw none yet. She was on the far extreme border of the District, it was probably unlikely that she would find anyone all the way out there. Glaring at the trees around her for not surrounding any people except for herself, she proceeded farther into the District. She was tired of walking and tired of searching, though she didn't stop. Her anxiousness drove her to keep walking while her pulse still drummed quickly in her veins despite her boredom. She had a goal, and she never gave up on her goals- no matter how cruel the purpose.

Lost amidst her thoughts of trouble and pain (to other people, that is) she didn't notice it when she walked right out of the surrounding forest and right into the open District Square. All of the people suddenly surrounding her was overwhelming; she wasn't sure which one of them it was she wanted to target for her games. Her cold hazel eyes gazed around slowly at all of the unsuspecting, oblivious people as she pondered which one might be the most entertaining to bother. She wasn't well-hidden where she was standing, which could pose a problem. Backing up a few steps, she searched for a tree to climb onto that was close to the Square and yet still nestled away from it so she wouldn't attract any unwanted glances. As much fun as it would be to get caught by a peacekeeper and then escape singlehandedly, she had a goal, and being caught was not on her to-do list. She sat there in her tree branch impatiently, though thankfully she didn't have to wait for long until she found what seemed to be the perfect target.

It was a boy, or rather a man that couldn't be too much older then herself. He was large and appeared very strong, and he had not only a dagger with him but also a bow and arrow. All she had was her own dagger, though that would do if she were to fight him. He was walking towards the part of the forest that she was currently taking refuge in. He appeared dangerous and dark, therefore he would be the perfect target. It was always boring to prey on the weak. As he neared her hiding spot she made sure to keep very still and silent as to not be seen. Smiling wide, she then spoke as if she was almost normal. "Hi there." When she spoke her voice was the slightest bit flirtatious, and her gaze softened considerably. Her smile was no longer mischievous but instead sweet. He didn't seem like the friendly type, and that would surely make for an interesting event.

It had to be exciting, after all.

To any other person on the planet, going around and finding a particular individual to annoy was not a hobby. Other people had normal hobbies, if any at all. Hunting, fishing, exercising, rock-climbing, whatever passed the time. Mercury Duval had tried all of the above (not to mention several more) and although she wasn't particularly bad at them, they did not satisfy her. They weren't dangerous enough, nor were they amusing to her. She craved edge-of-the-seat excitement like a dying child craves food; it's essential for her to survive and keep sane (if she ever was sane in the first place.) The excitement from this hobby? The reactions of her new victims friends.

Still swinging her legs back and forth, she was unsure of how this stranger would react. It was much easier to judge someone's reactions later on after meeting them than in the beginning when she knew so little of what kind of person whom she was dealing with. At the present moment she could only rely on how the stranger looked, and that was obvious enough. He didn't appear to be the happiest fellow of them all and he didn't seem like the kind of person to stop in the middle of what he was doing just because she said two words to him. It angered her more than anything else- he was boring her already. He couldn't see it then because his back was turned to her and he was walking away, but her face transformed immediately from that fake cutesy smile and flirtatious eyes to a cold angered glare that she had perfected so well. All he did was stop in his tracks and then continue on, and that was unacceptable. Did he not hear the welcome in her voice? Did he not see that she was polite and nice and only looking for someone to talk to?

But maybe that's because she wasn't.

Angrily, she dropped from the tree branch and onto her feet, still staring after the stranger who had barely acknowledged her existence. Smoothing her hair down and brushing it over her shoulders, she raised her eyebrows at him and crossed her arms, though she was sure he wasn't watching her. She watched to see if he would stop again, and when he did not she sent one last glare his way (she couldn't very well keep glaring at him if she was trying to act nicely) and put a smile back onto her face. She skipped after him in the most energetic manner and patted him on the shoulder to get his attention.

"Come on now, it's not nice to ignore someone when they say hello to you." She tilted her head to the side and gazed at him. He looked unlike herself- or at least who she was pretending to be. His face was contorted into a glare and he looked strong and intimidating, standing at least 6 feet tall and looking as if he could attack at any moment. He hadn't looked friendly before, but up close it was simply ridiculous. He looked mean and uncaring, and it was then that she didn't regret her decision one bit. He was going to be an amusing one, if he stayed to deal with her. If not.. well then she could follow him.
