God, the cold killed. Naoki was grateful for the warmer clothes he was wearing. There weren't many of that sort back at the warehouse he, his brother, and the rest of his adopted family called home, even with the only girl in their group being something of a talented seamstress. The ones he was wearing now were a combination of bought, stolen, and handmade clothing. It was a pretty fascinating mix, Naoki had to admit. And he thought it had turned out pretty decent too.
At the present, Naoki was crouched down in front of the plot of earth his parents were buried in. He'd only been here for a matter of minutes, just looking at the ground, feeling reverent.
District 11. Home.
Christmas was coming soon, and even though Naoki and his brother had pretty recently come to this place to pay their respects to their deceased parents, Naoki had been the one to insist they return. He knew he and Ki would likely be spending their Christmas with their new family back at the warehouse, and while that was the happiest plan he could imagine for himself, he knew that with Christmas in just a matter of a few days, it was only proper that he see the people who'd made sure he'd survived to even be this old, to even see the Christmases he had. And of course, he wanted to visit them.
Luckily, there had been no problems sneaking onto the train to get all the way down to District 11, and so far, despite the cold, no other annoyances as well. Naoki did wonder what he and his brother were going to do once they were done visiting their parents--he hadn't quite thought of that small snag--but he imagined they could improvise. If they had to sleep in the woods, so be it....They would manage somehow.
Naoki rocked forward, crouching, on his feet, and drew the initials of his parents' names in the snow. A thick blanket of the white material covered the ground over where Naoki and Ki's family were buried. When Naoki drew his hand back, the letters showed up clear as day, facing the heavens. He almost wondered if they could see them, from where they were.
Naoki put his hands together and blew into the small space in between, trying to regain some warmth in his fingers. He hadn't placed it yet, but he'd even brought a small gift for his deceased family. If he wasn't mistaken, Ki had as well.
"Rest in peace, guys." Naoki placed the small present, a shiny white package with a silver bow, on top of the grave, in a place where it blended well with the snow and would be better concealed. "Love you..."
He leaned back a bit, his arms still folded over his knees, and sighed. It was something kind of hard to explain, and he probably wouldn't bother trying anyway, considering he'd probably just get laughed at, but Naoki couldn't really put into words how much just sitting there, being close to his blood relatives....how much that meant to him. He felt a wave of sadness pass through him and quickly bit his lip, fighting back the tears. Life wasn't fair for the people who suffered the most, and coming back to District 11, he'd seen with his own eyes that it hadn't changed. The trains departing from the place had been stocked with probably 3/4 of the community's entire crop growth. He wondered how any of the residents here could be alive at all, at the rate the Capitol was taking their food.
Naoki blinked a few times, then rubbed one gloved hand across his face to make sure the tears stayed away.
