Dignity Ryder

It's unusually warm out today. It has me in a surprisingly good mood. I'm not even looking out for Uncle as I usually do. I'm not worrying about people staring at my six-month-pregnant belly. Or wondering if they think I'm a whore. It doesn't matter right now, because the snow is melting and I can hear goddamn birds singing. It feels like it's been years since I've heard birds, though I know it's only been a few months.

I take my time getting home, smiling pleasantly at the birds that swoop down into the streets. Spring is coming. And then it will be Summer. Sometime during the transition between the two seasons, I'm going to have my baby. I've come to terms with the fact. I'm still pissed at Uncle for impregnating me, and I'm still terrified of him. But at least I haven't seen him since I moved out of his house four months ago.

I still shudder to think of the things he did to me, the way he hurt me. I rub at the pink burn scar running down my right arm. I can still feel it burning sometimes, though it's been a long while since Uncle stuck it in the fireplace. I shake my head, trying to clear away these thoughts. I think about Uncle and what he did to me far too much. Today is a nice day, and it shouldn't be clouded with thoughts of him.

As I picked my way through the streets toward my small home, I was thinking about everything except my uncle and where my feet were going. They were taking me towards home, but the path they took was very uneven. I started off at the left side of the street, meandered toward the right, then ended up at the left side again. People just ducked out of my way.

A pain shot up my leg. I'd stepped on the curb, twisting my foot painfully. I couldn't keep myself up. My hands slammed against the pavement. I could feel hot pinpricks of blood on them, the skin peeled off by the hard pavement. No one looked at me. No one stopped to help me up. That's fine, I thought. Pay no attention to the pregnant girl that just fell over. She's not hurt at all.

Life's still a bitch. I was doing so great, I really was! With Dolly in the Detention Center, my life had been oddly calm. I never had to wake up worrying about not waking up. She was never standing there over my bed with a knife. There was never any fear that she'd ambush me when I stepped through the door coming home. It was awesome! Then she came back and my life went back to hell. Life's a bitch, it seriously is.

So this morning when I wake up, I'm scared as hell that my sister is going to be standing over my bed with that whip, about to bring it down across my face. You'd be amazed at how surprised I was that she wasn't there. She was nowhere to be found. Probably still sleeping or something. I think I'm starting to like the prospect of a child if it keeps Dolly away from me. Yeah, you heard right. My sis is pregnant, woopty-doo. Problem is is that its mine. You'd be surprised at the things these people make me do. Anyway, I wasn't taking any chances. I pull on my shirt and a pair of old jeans, and I bolt out of the door with a quick hello to my mother.

The sun is shining today, which is weird for a February morning. If I wasn't so scared, I'd probably enjoy the day or maybe even smile. It was still a bit cold, though. Man, I wish I'd grabbed my coat on the way out. It may be old and raggedy, but at least it keeps me somewhat warm. I just don't know what possessed me to put on a short sleeve shirt. Probably because I wanted to look hot for the ladies. Although, I'm pretty sure "hot" doesn't matter when you're freezing cold.

I continue down my street into the district square. Not too long ago the Reaping was held here. I remember how much Dolly wanted us to be in there just so she could legally torture me. Good times. But now I think she's traumatized me beyond repair. It seems like there are pregnancy women everywhere! See, look, there's one right there tripping over the curb! Well jeez, you think she'd look where she was going even if she cant see over that big belly. Instinctively, I start to head in the other direction. If I walk that way, it would be rude to not help her up. My other option is to return home to Dolly. I choose the former. My stride speeds up as I walk back in the direction of the girl, trying not to think about my twin sister. As I approach the female, I stick out my hand for her to grab so I can just get this over with.

Just as I was trying to pull myself to my feet on my own, a hand appears in my vision. I take it, glad that there's still a few people in the world with some decency. It's guy, probably around my age, but taller. I grab his hand and start to pull myself to my feet. As soon as I put weight on my left foot, pain shot up through my ankle, and I crumpled to the ground again.

"Fuck!" This is just wonderful. How am I supposed to go to work with a twisted ankle? They barely let me work in my engorged state. I need the money. Having a baby is expensive, I know that. And even more expensive when you consider that I'm paying for it all alone. I pull up the hem of my pants an inspect my ankle. It's already swelling. There's no way I'll be able to get home on this, let alone go to work tomorrow. I grab the guy's hand again and pull myself upright, careful not to put any weight on my left foot. I wrap an arm around his shoulder to help me stay up better.

"Do you think you could help me home? I twisted my ankle, and I can barely stand right now, so I'd really appreciate it. My house isn't far, just down the street from here." You can't really even call it a house. It's more of a shack. I was lucky I could afford it with the meager amount of money I had when I moved out of Uncle's house. Those first days, I had to do without much food. It was worth it though, worth getting away from Uncle.

As soon as she grabs my hand, she falls back down. Great, preggo cant even stand now! This is just my lucky day, isnt it? I shouldve just kept walking past her or, better yet, taken off in the other direction. But no, Declain makes horrible life decisions, so Declain came over here and helped up preggo!
