Running down the street Jetaret cursed her school for being let out late. Her shift at the factory started in five minutes and it was placed halfway across the District. Trying to sling her bag over her shoulder Jetaret felt her arm go numb. She cursed herself as she dropped all of the papers she had had in her left arm on the wet sidewalk. The freshly fallen rain made the air hot and sticky. Jetaret's ebony hair fell out of it's now loose ponytail when she bent down. She attempt to pick up her now damp school papers with her good arm.

She was considered a cripple by most people. With her damaged nerves she really had no choice but to accept it. Now she had learned from that encounter with the Peace Keeper to never get caught stealing. Then again most people misjudged her. She was an introvert that never spoke out unless needed.

Finally struggling to get up she was off running again. Her face red as she breathed in the thick morning air she was just hoping to get to the factory on time. Turning on a dime she had to stop eventually to catch her breath. Her heart pounding irregularly against her chest she leaned up against the gate for a second. She was so close yet so far away from the factory. Continuing on at a slow pace she bumped into some people. Mumbling little apologies she wondered why people just wouldn't get out of her way.

Gabriel Adair

Gabriel races down the street to catch up to Jetaret. How long could he keep this up. The shifts started so soon and the only thing he could do was grab his bike from the school bike rack. As he quickly flew down the street as if he was literally cutting the hair with his spiky hair, he could hear the mumbles of a thousand people as he passed them.

He had left his backpack in the classroom and forgot all about it. He knew that his shift at the factory was more important than his schoolwork, anyway, so he bothered not to go back and grab it. The only thing he could do at that point, was keep accelerating towards her, his friend. The one he knew he wanted to help. The one he would help.

"Hey! Jet! Hop on!" He yells in her direction. "If you want to get to the factory in time, you have to trust me!" He pulls up next to her and awaits a decision. Even he knew running halfway across the district with an arm like that would put anyone at risk.

Jetaret Sesch

Frowning she contemplated her decisions. She never had trusted anyone fully but at this rate she had no choice. The factory shift started soon and she really didn't have any other means of getting there. Pursing her lips she muttered a small,"Okay. Thanks." as she grabbed his hand.

Gaberiel was the one person she know she could trust, but still even at that she always kept her communication to a minimum. The data chips on her bracelet jangled as she situated herself on the bike. Rubbing her left arm she hoped to get the feeling back into it before the shift started. One thing was for sure though she owed Gabe for showing up. He was practically her only friend.

Gabriel Adair

Now with a new passenger, Gabe knew he had to be swift but careful. "How ya holdin' up back there, Jet?" He asks. How long could it take to get to this factory on the bike. Hm. The Wind surely wasn't helping. Hot wind and speed do not mix. As They were nearing the factory on the bike, Gabe tried to keep to himself but he couldn't help to smile.

The hot air cuts through his nose as the speed increases. He starts to feel woozy and sweats even harder pushing towards their shifts. He was trying to help not only himself, but someone who already had a hard time getting around anyway. He felt Nice. He felt Accomplished.

He arrived at the factory about a minute before his shift will start and started making his way towards his post. What a ride. The only problem is, he's getting close. He's getting too close to someone who may possibly be his enemy in the near future, with the Reaping right around the corner. He tries not to speak much to her as he walks away.

Jetaret Sesch

Giving a small thanks she watched Gabe run off to his work station. She understood the look in his eye as he walked away. It was the one that many tributes had given each other before stepping into the arena prior to the Hunger Games. She bit her lip as she monotonously started her work. The factory was dank and stuffy due to the rapid increase in humidity. Feeling her arm tingle in response to the feeling of well feeling she used that moment to tie her hair back once more.

Bending over the small work table she quietly slipped some spare wires and data-chips into her deep pockets. Slipping her goggles on she placed her thickly rimmed glasses on the table. Giving a sigh she admired one of the delicate silver screws that would call the computer home for the rest of its life.
She gazed around at her "co-workers" that she as well as her parents. Which is to say not at all. Her parents used to work here but that soon changed after the beating they had received from the Peace Keepers that had kept watch here. It had scarred her mind permanently.

Gabriel Adair

"I hate working here," he says softly to himself. "All I do is make electronics. Chip by chip, day by day. I have a life..." His voice getting ever so softly to the point where he was just thinking he said those things. Concentrated, he worked. A few more hours and he could go home and rest. All he could think about was that ride to the factory, though. It kept his mind off of how boring his work was, and threw his concentration onto his friend, Jet.

How long could he keep this up before the Peacekeepers knew he was slacking off. Immediately he started back to his work. As seconds pass, he thinks about how things would have been between them if he hadn't given Jet a ride. Finally, he finishes his project and is let out early.

"Thank you, fast hands." He says as he walks out the door. Now the only thing that kept him from happiness was the humidity in the air. He easily sweats and can not bear the heat. He grabs his bike and makes his way home, again thinking about Jet. He can't go and give her a ride, he may be opening a door to his future death, if they were to be put in the same Games together. That wouldn't be good. Now he knows he has to limit his future interactions with her, as hard as it may be, going to the same school and all.

Patting her hands on her pants she sighed. Almost finished with the computer she was working she put on the finishing touch. A little sticker that said,"Made in District 3". Rolling her eyes at the redundancy she wondered what other district made computers that would cause them to put on a sticker like that. Pulling the now soot covered goggles off her face she picked up her soot covered glasses. Wiping the soot on to her cargo pants she looked around once again. Seems like everything was all set here. Grabbing whatever extra parts she had left on the table she almost smiled in glee. It was like a child in a candy shop with twenty dollars to blow.

Walking out of the factory she saw Gabe out about to hop on his bike. Jogging up to him she said,"Look I know what your worried about. The reaping and all that, but if you put it this way the chances of me actually being chosen as a tribute with you are very slim and even if that happens you know my weakness already. You know maybe we can just stay fr-friends." she choked over that foreign word. She had never been really a friend with anyone before. The idea was just so different to her. So frightening almost to open up to someone and trust them. Trust. Ha! she barely knew the word. She had never had a reason to rely on anyone. Ever.

Looking at the ground awkwardly she felt like saying a comforting hopeful phrase but it was too much for her. She felt so uncomfortable in this area she was literally speechless.

"Heh, Ya know what. That sounds like a pretty good idea. I know we aren't that much alike, but what do you say we get to know each other." He himself is surprised in his change of thought so quickly. He knew it would end well, he just didn't want to hurt her. Deep inside, he knew that even though the chances are slim, they could both be chosen. He realizes what the word "slim" actually means and lets out a slight sigh of relief.

"Thanks for running out to me with this, I was about to head off. Need a ride?" He asks patiently. This time he wouldn't be so hard on her because he wouldn't have to rush her home. If she says yes, that is. Inside he wishes she would but he can not predict the future. Now he just stands there looking entirely innocent. His pants are covered in soot, his shirt is too. He doesn't want her to feel uncomfortable even though they had come out of the same type of building and both look like dirty bats out of a dirty cave.

He opens his options and has nothing else to do now, but feel sorry for making such a big deal about the reaping, and dragging her into his feelings. He knows he did and he can't let it go. Now, there is one thing that will determine how he truly feels about her. This one thing is the ride home.

Looking up with surprise painted on her face she nodded in consent. Stuttering a little bit as she answered she said quietly,"I-I think that would be great." pausing for a moment as she hooped on the bike she tried to think of a topic of discussion. She never really talked too much. Always afraid that she would give away too much or just overly trust someone. Thinking deeply she came up with a question,"What made you decide to talk to me?" she asked quietly. "I mean no one usually talks to me at all, even my paren-" she cut off afraid to give away too much she fell silent.

Was she really ready to tell him about the beating or her scar. Maybe she should start even smaller. It wasn't that she was holding back because of him it was because of her. She was always ostracized from most groups. She often spent her time in a shed tinkering for crying out loud! How could she even think that social skills could come naturally to her her. She bit her lip yet again as she waited for his response.

He is startled by the question. "Why not? Hehe. I've seen you around in school and I.. Well, I've always wanted to talk to you. It seemed like earlier today would have been the best time since we were both headed for the factory, and I had a bike. Why not take you along?" he says, concentrated hard on the road ahead. He has always been one to help others, no matter how snobby he can get. He always had put others before himself. He's not sure he should be too open. Maybe he shouldn't tell her about the metal plate in his left knee and how it was killing him to speed towards the factory after school. Maybe he shouldn't tell her that in a few years he would probably forget her. How would he tell her, though?

"Look, I know you want to be secretive and all, but you can trust me. You can tell me anything at anytime. Hold me tighter so you don't fall off." He says with a slight blush brushed upon his face. (Don't do it...) He says to himself in his mind. (Don't get attached.) He reverts his attention back to Jet and asks "What about me? Why did you decide to reply to all of my questions?" Now he is hanging by a thread so-to-speak as he wonders what to do with the rest of the ride to her home.

Hesitating a little bit she carefully squeezed her arms a little tighter around his middle blushing furiously. He smelled good ,like apples she thought to herself. "W-well I guess I answered all your questions because you caught me off guard." she said knowing it was probably a stupid reason. She had never even made eye contact with anyone at school. Even the teachers hardly knew her. Feeling heart speed up again she knew that it was not due to the situation that was occurring. It was her heart murmur that caused her to be out of breath. Breathing deeply in and out she tried to slow the rate down.

Now thinking of probably the stupidest question ever she asked,"So uh what are you wearing to the reaping?" She knew that she would earn a confused stare but it was the first thing that had popped into her head. Besides it might detract from the fact that she hadn't talked to her parents for 5 years or that she had a heart disorder. Really, most of the day she was a shell of a person.

He doesn't know how to answer this question. He hasn't even remotely thought about what he was going to wear to the reaping. In hesitation he answered "U-Um. Something Formal, what about you?" Yeah. That was a safe question to ask. Nothing too personal, and nothing too far from casual, either. Something just right.

Having asked that, his palms began to sweat in anticipation. He might have said something wrong but he wouldn't know. After all he barely knew Jet, and had rarely seen her outside of school. Now he was taking her to her house. This was all moving a bit fast for him. But he didn't want it to slip away, so he latched onto this beast of a relationship and vowed to stick with it for as long as it took.

He now doesn't feel so strange, though. He hasn't told her about his previous childhood, and he doesn't intend to unless she ask's about it. At first he thought about telling her some personal information about him, but he didn't want to upset her by pressuring her into letting him know something personal about her as well. He fell silent awaiting her reply as the two rode down her street, on the other side of the district from the factory. Her house was close now.

In his attempt to elongate his conversation, he noticeably slows down the bicycle. Sighs. And wonders what he would have done now, if his past hadn't made him so successful in his feelings towards others.

Felling the bike slow down Jetaret understood what he was doing hopping off the bike she said,"Hey I know this small little place near the outskirts of the district. It's a small pond that might be f-fun to go to." she offered stumbling over the word fun. When was the last time she had used that word. Heck when was the last time she had laughed or even smiled. Extending her left arm shakily she put on an attempt at a smile not even knowing if she was using the correct expression. "It's only a quick walk from here. There's even some places you could hide the bike if you want." she said with her small smile.

Inside she was feeling a new emotion. Perhaps happy or satisfied? She couldn't tell the difference. Her right hand subconsciously went into her pocket and played with a bit of wire. "I'm wearing a dress this year." she replied to his question,"I usually got away with a long skirt and a t shirt but this year I tried something new." choosing her words carefully she though that she gave an adequate answer. Just enough for insight and just the right amount to leave questions. She had never had this long of a conversatio but she was willing to try something new.

"That actually sounds pretty n-nice." He said stepping off of the bike as well. The last time someone offered to take him somewhere, he ended up with his leg bent backwards because the soccer game he was invited to got a little rough. He didn't try anything like this after that, but he felt something about Jet. Something he knew he would like. A feeling of immense affection. Should he feel this way? How would she react if he told her? He was afraid to find out so he didn't bother.

He walked over and gestured for a hug. A hug. When was the last time he had a hug? It surely wasn't from his parents. He doesn't show much affection so this was a bit new to him. Maybe she would accept his offer. Maybe this would chain them together into a new kind of relationship. Maybe he was willing to let her take him to this "pond." He hadn't thought much about it, but he really has started to take a liking to this girl. Now he stands there with his arms spread wide open looking slightly like a fool without a piece to complete his puzzle of a hug. Now he waits.

Looking at Gabe with a small amount of confusion she suddenly recognized the gesture for a hug. This was strange to her. Nevertheless she shakily put her arms around him. It felt nice. An embrace maybe was all that was needed to show you trusted someone. Feeling a tug in her gut she was stranger to this new emotion. All of the sudden she buried her head into his chest and whispered,"You smell like apples." Where had that come from? She felt like a bumbling fool. She was a stranger to emotion but it felt nice. She had never felt more. Period.

Looking up into his eyes she felt like she was at a small haven. A place where it was okay for her to feel pain, sorrow, even love. A wetness had begun running down her face. Were these tears? She hadn't cried since she had been whipped in the market place by the Peacekeeper. That marked the day she wouldn't look anyone in the eye or even hint at trouble. now she had broken that silence. Maybe she could trust after all. Maybe her life still had a chance at living and becoming something more!
