Clyde Cloversmith // District 9 Plot , Day 1

A bow and arrow. I didn't really mind having a weapon like that, those were my favorite. I wouldn't have any trouble finding an animal to kill, perhaps a squirrel or chipmunk. It didn't matter. Looking around, I see a madness of green and brown - the colors of the forest. I'm scared - but not enough for my narcolepsy to act up. I'm scared, but I know escaping is impossible. And I didn't want to die yet.
I wasn't really sure about my emotions right now.
Part of me was scared - I had to do something. Something good. Like kill an animal. Just one. If I didn't; I'd die.
I just wish I knew how much arrows I was given. I didn't bother looking in the quiver. I just went on - not caring about anything. I had to win for me. For my family. I don't know what to do. My senses come back to life when I hear a bush shake.
I shoot the arrow qucikly.

Phwaffles

Phwaffles was running along the forest, his little feet trying to keep pace with the other squirrel. It was always hard being the little one of the group, but that never stopped the other squirrels from trying to make him keep up with the rest. And he would complain as much as he wanted, but they never cared. In short, he hated being the runt. His little nose twitched, trying to find any other source of food possible. Of course, it wasn’t quite the right time for nuts, but that never stopped them. Plus, anything that would get him out off his mother’s grasp was better than nothing.

His ears picked up on some sound, causing him to stand right still and perk his ears. All the older squirrels would tell him about how there were always scary monsters called “humans” out there in the woods, that he needed to be careful. Was it one of them? Were they going to hurt him? The other squirrels always said the “humans” preferred the little ones, that they picked them right off the bat. Phwaffles kept standing there, trying to see if the scary monster was indeed after him.

Zzzing! Phwaffles stood wide-eyed at the huge looking…something. It didn’t look like a human but when Phwaffles cautiously touched the sharp edge of it, it looked just as dangerous. With a yelp, he sprinted as fast as he could, trying to find Corwin. Corwin! Wait for me! he squeaked, frantically scurrying through the bush. What if it came back and was after him? With wild eyes, he moved as fast as his little paws would let him.

Corwin

Phwaffles! Corwin angrily snapped at the little squirrel who had been following him. First off, he was told that he had to take the little squirrel with him. Then the very same little squirrel ran into him with as much force as an adult male squirrel. This was not the day that Corwin wanted. Corwin turned around and stared at Phwaffles before giving a lecture of squeaks at the little one. If Phwaffles was going to be so careless, he was going to get killed. And it was going to be Corwin’s fault and Corwin would never hear the end of it.

But Phwaffles had his own series of squeaks too, motioning to something big and scary and pointy. Corwin rolled his eyes at the little squirrel, ashamed of the imagination he had. If that squirrel was going to keep rambling on like that, Corwin was going to have to make sure he was tied down. But the other squirrel just kept jumping around, trying to grab Corwin’s attention, making the same squeaks over and over again.

I missed, and I didn't know how much more arrows I had. I didn't bother to check; I was too focused. Somehow, I was going to have to kill an animal. I didn't care what it was, but I was going to have to get the job done. Really, it wasn't anything new. I was used to killing animals, and I didn't know why it was different at that moment - but it was. Maybe because I would lose if I didn't kill an animal at that time. Maybe because I wouldn't get years of free-food and slacking-off.

Maybe because I would die if I didn't kill another animal. I had to kill one.

I really wasn't going to die then, I was going to fight. I would still be the quiet, kind boy I always was. I wasn't going to change in here like people in the arena changed. I wasn't a murderer - that was my job. I didn't know why I had to do this, but I shot again. I had to hit something this time; the little critter was still in sight. And I was hoping it was going to be dead in a second. I aimed for the squeaks.

-Phwaffles goes "eepers!" as he sees the arrow barely miss Corwin.
-Proceeds to go on a rage of squeaks.

-Corwin is shocked by the arrow.
-Stares wide eyed before getting annoyed by squeaks
-Yells at Phwaffles to shut up and then drags him
-Both of them are running as fast as they can.

Daring not to talk, my mind was full of swears. How I missed so much was a mystery. If I wanted to miss so much, I should have just gone home. But I knew that talking like that wasn't going to help anything. Not thinking of my actions; acting on impulse; I speak. "Crap!" escaping my mouth, it's hardly a whisper. The little animals were running away - obviously a squirrel. I had to hit it. I couldn't miss. I had to win for my family.

I had to win for Clarice.

Clarice was my best friend and my sister. I trusted her with anything, and she trusted me with everything - I think. My main inspiration was her, I had to survive at least one day for her. The pain if I died would be hard for her to handle, and as cliche as it was, I was going to win this for her. She shouldn't of had to work day after day, while she still barely ate at our house. I was going to win food for my family, no doubt about it. This was a really sick thing to do. I mean, they could have at least told us we were going to die if we didn't hand in any meat at the end of the day or handed in the least amount of meat. I would have liked to say some good-byes,

but all the good-byes I said were the ones I need to. They were all to my family.

Honestly, I didn't have much friends. Actually, two of the people I ever did encounter, Ruby Falconer and Saskia Hamilton, were here with me. I guess it sucked how no matter what, someone I sort of knew was dying in this... tournament. But to be as straight as an arrow, I could care less about them; it's not like I personally know them. Sure, I felt pity for the blind girl, but that was all. I really didn't see why I was supposed to baby them, and I didn't.

I couldn't let the squirrel(s I wasn't sure if there was two, though I thought there was) escape! I simply forgot about them, but my thoughts rolled over in my head in a matter of seconds. Aiming for the same squirrel (if there was another one), I shot another arrow. I had to hit it. I had to.

((I am so sorry for filler posting))

-Corwin gets hit. Uh-oh.
-Phwaffles starts wailing and squeaking and wailing.
-He attempts to shout at the guy and only succeeds in even more squeaking.
-Corwin's last words have to do with yelling at Phwaffles to keep running.
-Phwaffles is scrambling around in circles cuz he's young ~~and stupid~~.

What? Why did I hear so much... squeaking? I obviously killed one of the squirrels, so there had to be another one. Right? I see a squirrel that's wacked out, running in circles. I couldn't concentrate on it - it was running around too fast. Aiming for it, I decide to shoot right when it goes into the bushes. "Dang it."

Phwaffles squeaked as an arrow whipped past him. No no no! Don't want to die, too scary! As he kept running around, frantic for someone to come save him, he ran off his circles and made a straight line...toward the tree. His eyesight was reasonably good for a little squirrel, but his mind was so clouded as he could only think about trying to get to safety that he didn't see the big, brown thing in front of him. What do I do? What do I--. And with that, he crashed into the tree, successfully knocking himself out for a few minutes.
