Genie almost never attended classes in the afternoons. At the beginning of the school year she had been granted a special exception, because of the fine work her family continued to do in making pistols for the Capitol. Genesis had proven herself rather skilled at dealing with the molten metals, and therefore invaluable in the smithy. Some days, though, school had to come first, particularly exam days. She found it rather tedious, especially in District Three; everyone passed, mostly all with the highest marks possible. What was the point? She knew her skills could be put to better use manipulating and stamping and polishes firearms. But did she say anything about the stupidity of the arrangement? No.

Instead she quickly aced her math exam and used the remaining minutes of class to survey the room. As she had only attended a few afternoon classes the entire year she felt like an outsider, though she recognized many faces. None were exactly what she would call friends, but she recognized the smartest boy in her grade, the pair of twins who had lost their parents in a chemical accident, the boy who had lost his sister to the Games. She added their tragedies more easily than their names.

It was the last though that caught her eye. As soon as they were dismissed for the evening, she ducked into the hallway, books clutched to her chest. She didn't know why today, of all days, she felt like talking to someone, but she did. Maybe it was because she missed the company of her brothers and uncle, but maybe it could be that she actually wanted a friend, someone who she wouldn't have to hide her thoughts and feelings. Anyone who lost a sibling to the games was bound to hate them, right?

Not that she wanted to talk about the games. But she didn't want to not talk about them either. She wanted to let her guard down, and there had always been something about his eyes. Genie quietly threaded her way through the sea of students until she fell into step beside him. "You heading home?" She asked, because it seemed innocent and polite, and if he wanted to escape, it would offer an easy out. She didn't smile or really even look at him, but her head tilted in his direct and she made one futile attempt to catch his gaze.

Hatred, that was all that Darox felt. He didn't particularly like school; though he managed to do fine. Still, his mom and dad - every single day - had to drag him out of bed and bring him to school. He wasn't really a person who looked forward to going to school; he hated the pressure of answering a question for some reason, perhaps because he might do bad(?), he didn't know. He just knew that school was no fun; and he didn't need it. No one did. Every Panemite learned what they needed to learn; basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and dividing. Really, that could be used for a lot of stuff. But teachers felt the need to teach how to add and divide fractions, or stuff like elapsed time. Not like Darox payed attention much. Why can't math just solve it's own problems? was a very childish and cliche quote; but Darox very much enjoyed the glory of it. Oh, and there's more than just math; Algebra, Language, History. Really, the list goes on and on. But Darox didn't like pondering on facts like that for too long.

He went to school that day like he did most of the other day; sad, depressed, not really caring about what was going on. Well, he was always depressed, but school just added onto the pile of things that made his life a virtual hell. Morning classes are the worst for Darox, maybe because he was still tired then, or the fact that he hasn't eaten lunch yet, whatever it was, he strongly disliked those early classes, and his body didn't like them either. Normally during those classes, Darox daydreams about his sister being alive again, or actually being happy -- those are things the pale-skinned boy thrives to achieve and see, but sadly, the latter one is more realistic, and as much as Darox hates it, he can't deny it. Somehow, he managed to accept the sad fact that he never will see his sister (or you can say best-friend) ever again. And in reality, that was what sucked the most about his life.

School was again, a very boring thing in Darox's life, so he didn't focus on it too much, unless he was in it. He gradually looked outside the classroom windows, focusing on leaves that were the colors of spring: yellow and green with pink blossoms. Really, as depressed as Darox was, these colors gave him the least bit of hope. His sister loved the spring-time. Maybe he wasn't the happiest kid, but he could be cheerful sometimes, but only if he forgets. And that isn't easy.

Walking into his last class for the day, he saw more faces he didn't recognize; more kids he didn't (and probably never would) talk to. As usual, Darox looked around the classroom, outside the windows; never raising his hand. He never cared to participate - he had better things to do than to tell his classmates answers. Only once did the teacher call him, in which he just stared at him, and shrugged. But, tonight, Darox was just going to go over this lesson in the textbook.

'Brrrrinnnnnggggg' was Darox's new favorite word. It symbolized freedom for him; the end of class. He walked out of the class, getting lost in the sea of other people. He eventually saw a brown-haired girl, then, that girl talked to him. "You heading home?" Darox wasn't going to lie and say he wasn't going to go home. But he didn't really know if he wanted company on the walk to his house. He decided to be as friendly as possible, might as well. He might die tomorrow, and that would be one less person he knew. "Yeah, I'm headin' home. Care to join me one my walk?" He couldn't change his mind now; he couldn't take back his words. Darox didn't mind though, company wasn't too bad all the time. And for all Darox knew, she could be an exception.

Genesis very nearly backpedaled the moment the words flew out of her lips. She wanted to take them back, to leave the boy to his own thoughts and worries, to run home and spend the evening in the smithy. But she couldn't. She shouldn't. She should seize the moment, and try to recall that feeling of friendliness. It had twisted into something heavy in her stomach, something that felt a little like guilt and a little like the impulse to run. And hide. "Yeah, I'm headin' home. Care to join me one my walk?"

But then he replied, and it passed the responsibility of the situation back to her. Empowered, Genie tweaked her expression into a soft, almost embarrassed smile. "I'd like that." And with a shift of her stride she fell into perfect step with him. It was easy, almost, although she still felt that perhaps she had wrangled into something he didn't want to do. Still it felt very nearly nice to not be walking alone, although she didn't know if they lived near each other. This time of year, though, she wasn't likely to be out after sunset anyhow. She tried not to worry about that either, and realized that though they had been walking for a few minutes, they had not spoke again, which was likely her fault, since she couldn't seem to get out of her own skull.

"How do you think the test went?" It came out before she'd really though through the question. Did she want to talk about school, about the monotony of it? No. But how much useless banter did she need to weave into their interaction before she could ask him something serious, something real? Genesis risked a side glance at him. Darox seemed nice enough, although she couldn't recall anything he had ever said, really. She wondered if he was much older than her, if he would have to face the Reaping three or two more times, or perhaps only even once more. What a blessing that day would be. Will be, she corrected herself.

Genie folded her lips together and then twisted towards him, flexing through her hips so that she could look at him while they walked. "Forget the test. It was stupid." She smiled. "You do anything after school? You know, for you?"

Darox thinks about that once a day, at the least. He hates it though. Luckily, he couldn't ponder on that event of his life for too long -- someone's words interrupted his thoughts.

He'd gone away. That happened more and more often, or at least, maybe she noticed it more that she was older. Certainly her parents had slipped a few times over the years. But it didn't seem like her peers did. Not until they started losing people to the Games, too, until it became something real and dangerous, instead of just a show on the television. Genie stared at him as Darox drifted somewhere, his mind gobbled up by memories she couldn't see.

But she could guess what they looked like.

Sometimes it was easy enough to recall someone back to themselves, but she'd been screamed at before. So Genie took it cautiously. "So," she stared anew, large almond eyes ducking between his face and the ground in front of them. She realized they'd stopped walking once again. At this rate she would be late for dinner, but she found that she didn't care enough to hurry him along. There was something about him. Something broken, to be sure, but also something intriguing.

"You, uh, want to talk about something else?" Even though they hadn't been talking about much at all. She pressed her lips together, racked her brain, and finally said, "Have you ever gotten to handle a pistol?"

Memeories sucked. Not only did they distract Darox from his life, but they also made him sad, even more depressed than before. The thoughts and memories of Darox Rowan Lashe sunk him so deep in the water, and all he wants to do is breathe, but he can't. He's stuck there and he always will be. Darox will always be the kid in school that was already five feet under, only adding one foot to his death. Sometimes Darox wishes that he was dead already, but where would that lead him and all his friends? His parents would probably get the title of "The Least Luckiest Parents of District Three". In reality, though, his parents are the only people who would really be affected if he died. He didn't have any friends, so it wouldn't matter.

"So," "Oh! I mean... you shocked me... sorry." Suddenly glad and frustrated the the brunette interrupted his thoughts, he didn't say much. The girl saw that Darox was day-dreaming... or whatever it was that he was doing... so she woke him up. Realizing this, Darox shook whatever melancholy feelings he's feeling and decided to paint a coat of optimistic emotions on him. If this girl is going to be friendly to Darox, Darox will be friendly to her. "You, uh, want to talk about something else?" Darox shuffled at her as she says it. They weren't really talking about anything; not the test they just took or something. So Darox tries to think about what they were talking about as he nods his head in a clueless way.

"Have you ever gotten to handle a pistol?" Darox hates violence of any sort, and guns are far up there on the list of violent weapons. Anyone with brains could tell that a kid with a dead sister would hate weapons, or only like them to use on the person that killed their sister. Maybe the girl he's with has no clue that he even had a sister. Everyone knows, though. Everyone knows that Darox Lashe had a best friend who was his sister. Everyone knows that his sister, Clazia, was reaped and killed. Everyone knows Darox cuts himself and goes to therapy. Everyone knows Darox Lashe is left behind, and he can't catch up.

So the answer to the girl's question is "No... uh- I don't even know your name yet. You don't even know me yet. You're only talking to me 'cause my sister. It'd be nice to introduce yourself..." As rude as it is for Darox to just confront the girl like that, it's true. Darox knows the girl was only trying to reach out for him because of his sister. Darox would actually like it if for once if somebody wasn't fake and didn't want to walk home with him or go out to eat with him just because he has a dead sister. But when did anyone ever approach Darox in hopes to just 'find a friend'? Never. Darox knows this girl isn't any different.

A question from before comes into his mind. A question the girl asked him. "You do anything after school? You know, for you?" Of course, she was speaking about how his sister dies and how he goes to therapy. Perhaps she's here with him because of his sister, but only to comfort him, and not just go in school and brag about knowing the boy who lost his sister and best friend to the games. Realizing this, Darox shakes his head and speaks,

"I know you're not here just 'cause my sister died. You're here because you want to reach-out. It's just, so many people come and talk to be just so they can say that they know me really, but no one does. I'm sorry about snapping at you before and I think we should start over." He's telling the truth. He actually is sorry about his words from before. He does want to restart this conversation, but he also wants to restart his life. All his life, he has been wishing his future will be as fresh as the sun. But really, his life has been as murky at the moon.

"Oh, hi! I didn't see you there! My name's Darox Lashe, do you wanna walk home with me?" Although he thinks he sounds ridiculous, he doesn't care as he smiles. Kindness can go a long way, but sometimes it never helps. Today is one of these days, Darox thinks, where kindness goes a long way.

Genie tried to look at Darox but found she could neither hold his gaze, nor his face in her mind. He seemed to be blurry to her, which probably just meant that her contacts were getting old, but there was an unsettled quality about him she didn't understand. Couldn't. Genesis had never experienced anything half as traumatic as he had, and at this rate wasn't likely to either. She was almost old enough to be out of Reaping age, and she had no siblings. Well, technically she did, but they were so much older they felt like more distant relations - cousins, perhaps.

At any rate, Genie was rapidly running out of people to worry about. Except now she'd found someone new. She had shocked him? Genie blinked, the long fall of her eyelids. Lucky for her, introversion ran deep, and the shock of his words hardly registered on her face. He moved quickly forward in the conversation, leaving her aghast, awkward. What should she say? What could she say? What did etiquette dictate?

This was exactly why she never tried to talk to anyone.

"Sorry," she mumbled even though she wasn't. What did she have to be sorry for? She had no idea. "I mean, I didn't know your sister, myself, but we've - you and I - have been in classes together. Thought I could use some company. I'm Genie." She kept her head down as she talked, didn't offer her hand. After a few footsteps, her dark hair fell from her hunched shoulders, covering her pale face. She walked another few paces, stopped, and tucked her hair back.

When she looked back at him, her lips had formed a very small, thin line. "I don't want talk about anyone else but you, Darox. And yeah, I'd like to walk you home. Would that be alright?" She felt a little like she was trying to talk to a rabid animal. How did their country get to the point where the government's actions twisted people up so badly? She couldn't grok it, and she couldn't blame Darox for being the way he was. But boy, this was not the sort of conversation she had wanted, or imagined.
