The house itself was quite a structure. It must not have been an easy task constructing a building that towered over even most built to Capitol standards. The whitewashed walls of the mansion almost instilled the thought in one's mind that it was far to proper an estate to be the venue for an affair that most of the guests were probably hoping to be a shining example of Capitol hedonism. The color's contrast against the black double doors almost made the place look more like a basilica than a mansion, and the marble pillars on either side of the entrance looked archaic, but not dated at all.

It looked dull and dreary from the inside of the car window, but the moment he stepped out, its mystique was apparent and captivating. Gaius immediately decided that he would have to climb it one night. For now, however, he would have to settle for disappearing and looking at the (hopefully equally impressive) interior. The outside was almost enough to make him forget Adawna's driving, so the inside should've been no less than breathaking. "Well, come on then," he started, beckoning to the girls who were still in the car. With that, he began to speed his pace toward the door- almost as if he was there to explore the home instead of attend a party.

Nothing had gone quite the way she had hoped it would, but that didn't make it a bad day either. Here she was, booze in hand, with her best friend and, well, someone she at least found tolerable. She missed the other side of the triad, her girl best friend, but as her mother always told her, you couldn't have everything in life. And besides, cruising around in a car was pretty damn special. That had to count for something. July stared with equal parts awe and determination at the grand house. Captured by its tall lines and purity, head full of the ways in which they could defile it. Ah yes, maybe it was going to be a good day after all.

July was still practically salivating over the possibilities when Gaius recalled them to the present. She glanced at Adawna in the front seat, managed a grin, and then with a little bit of fumbling let herself out of the contraption. The day's heat hit her like a wall, but it was not wholly unwelcomed. July, after all, was a daughter of the summer. She relished the sudden shift from air conditioning to fresh air, opened up her arms to let it and the glory of the mansion in.

"This is crazy!" She declared, a giggle of delight escaping. Who lived here, she wondered. She wouldn't ask because that would only lead to knowing, and in knowing she could find herself in trouble. But she desperately wanted to know, mostly if they had any children of marriageable age. Likely not, if they let their mansion just lie fallow, but a girl could hope! July took each step towards the mansion slowly, her arms weighted down by the canteen of moonshine she carried. They swung at her hips, full and sloshing, reminding her that there were things to be done tonight, things that might need an excuse.

She came to a halt beside Gaius, once she eventually caught up to him. "Seems like your sort of haunt." July winked and then pushed one of the canteens into his chest. "Can you carry it for a bit?" She lifted her deep eyes to him, knowing that he had no taste for the gasoline-like stuff. Truly she didn't either. But ah the feeling of freedom... nothing could compare.

"Certainly." With an excited grin as he grabbed the canteen, he speculated what might have been inside until his inferences were shot down by the smell of alcohol. Boring,[/color] he thought. Then again, it was unrealistic of him to expect anything else, wasn't it? No one needed a canteen of water in the middle of the Capitol, where commodities of all sorts were abundant. Past water, alcohol was the only option he could see aside from a magical potion of some sort... and to the best of his knowledge, magic didn't exist. Yet.

Still, he was glad to see that, even if for a different reason, her enthusiasm seemed to match his own enthusiasm. Closing in on the black doors, he knocked... and waited... for quite some time. At first, he scowled, but he did hear music blasting from the inside. Telling himself they wouldn't mind if he just opened the door and walked in - telling himself that he was probably encouraged to just open the door and walked in - he followed his instincts. Slowly turning the golden knob on the black door, he tried to push it open.

Ostensibly, it wasn't locked, but it wasn't opening, either. He pushed again- then again, with both hands. Almost ready to ask July for help, he palmed his face as he realized what the problem was. ...It's... probably a pull door, hm? And with that thought, the door swung open as he pulled back on the knob. [/size]

Janice had woken up that day with her hair in a mess, her make-up smeared, and her whole room a jungle. Obviously, she was going to have to choose what to do first, clean her room, or take care of how she looked. In the capitol, the latter was more important, and as Janice was one of the cliches, she chose to work on how she looked. She stripped off her pajamas, and walked into a shower, at first burning herself. Then, turning the water to a cooler temperature, was refreshed. After a while though, the cold temperature made her shiver, but she kept it like that. Washing her hair and cleaning off any smeared mascara was easy with the help of some shampoo, conditioner, and bath-soap. Turning the knob so the water would turn off, Janice stepped out of the shower and wrapped a cotton-blue towel around her curvy body.

After curling bits of her hair and changing into more formal attire, Janice procrastinated that day. Started reading, something she never did while school was out, and also took a walk, something she simply never did. Eventually, it was around five, and she just remembered she had a party to attend to. While leaving the house, she was stopped by her mom. "I hope you don't think you're leaving with your room looking like a mess." Ugh. "I'll finish it when I get home, mom!" Her mom pointed to her room and Janice sighed. Drudging off, she rolled her eyes.

Janice vacuumed and polished and picked up clothing and made her bed and did anything she had to get out of this hell. After what seemed like twenty minutes of torture, she screamed "DONE!" and left with a door-slam. She didn't even bother to look in the back-seat of her car as she left the house to go to the party - she didn't care if her sister was in there. Putting the keys in the ignition, the engine turned on. The only thing she had on her was her phone, which she was probably not going to use. The car-ride there seemed to either take three days or three minutes; with the anxiousness in her veins, Janice was mad it was taking long to get there. Where the music she was listening made her forget about it. She parallel parked and walked up to the house, not looking back to see if Septima was behind her.

Knock, knock! The door opened and she was greeted by someone she forgot the name of. James? Daniel? She didn't care, she simply smiled and walked in. The party had barely started, because no one was there when she arrived, but she wouldn't have came so early if she wasn't bored out of her mind. She called up her friend, chit-chatted for a bit, and then hung-up. Some idle conversations took place with who was there, but no booze was served yet - not the average beer or the usual moonshine.

As she felt the need to leave, making an excuse like her mom was injured if she got caught, she started walking towards to door. She walked over to the door and couldn't open it for a second. It seemed like someone was pulling on it at the same time, so she relaxed, and a second later, tried to opened it again - and succeeded. Janice saw a figure, someone she knew, someone who matched up to her secretly-kleptomaniac boyfriend. Someone she had a crush on, but he barely knew she existed.

It was Gaius, chocolate-brown hair and all. Janice stood there staring for a second. But with him, was July. Janice didn't hate her, but she was simply envious of her, she was close to everyone! Janice was close to her sister, *October, and of course, July.

"Oh- Hi, Gaius!" Her face turned beet red as she approached her crush and escorted him inside. "How are things?"

"Hello, Janice!" it came as a surprise to him that he was able to recall her name as quickly as he was. It was dangerous to pay too much attention to a close friend's relatives at times- becoming close to them as well would be a bother later on. Gaius often imagined the strangeness of making a house call and having to tell someone he's known for years, 'actually, would you mind putting your sister on the phone?' Listening to how quickly his thoughts were digressing, he brought himself back to Earth. "Things are..." he sighed, letting out a muffled laugh. "...similar, Janice. And how are you?"

There was no better conversational tool than changing the subject. Making the conversation about the other person encouraged them, and permitted them to talk about themselves; something that Gaius found much more advantageous than talking to others about himself. If he was parting with his secrets and listening to himself go over information he had already experienced firsthand, what progress was there to be made?

The redness in her face as she spoke did occur to him, but pressing the issue couldn't have led anywhere favorable, especially in the middle of one of these... Can it be called a celebration? I suppose we could just say we're celebrating life, but... a party. Is it anything more than that? Gaius dropped the thought. Not likely, not likely.

Adawna let's her passengers flee the car. She's sure the word to use is flee. Her driving became even more erratic after the visit to *May's house. *May had refused to open the door to her room when we had stopped by instead directing me to where she kept her moonshine and telling us to help ourselves. The other's seemed quite pleased with this helping themselves to a canteens full of the stuff. Rather then joining them Adawna had stood for a few moments outside *May's door. She took the time to quietly acknowledge the burning sensation swirling around the usual hollow in her heart. In complete contradiction to the issue Adawna smiled brightly and told *May that she hoped she could make it to the party.

She then joined the others in the basement and helped herself to a more then generous portion of moonshine. She downed her first canteen and re-filled it before making her way back out to the car. [BAD Adawna] As the alcohol made it's way through Adawna's system her driving became more and more erratic finally ending with her jerking halt in front of the address she had been given.

She sat in the car for a second longer letting the tune that was blaring out of the car speakers conclude it's self. She tapped along to the beat on the steering wheel contemplating weather she should take some percussion classes, she had never tried the drums. Her parents would probably point out that they didn't look quite as lady-like as her other instruments. Really that was half of the appeal. The song faded away and Adawna shut off her car and wandered out of the car toward the entrance.

“Janice!” She said squeaking slightly at the second syllable. Smiling at the familiar face she took another sip from her canteen “Did that little cutie drunk princess, tag along with ya again?” she giggled.

She didn't wait for much of an answer before making her way farther into the house. “This place is wicked” She shouted back to her friends leaning slightly against the wall.

It was a relief to only worry about one canteen, although July immediately felt unbalanced. She hugged the second to her chest, thinking it a bit undignified that she had to haul the alcohol herself in the first place. Was she not at the top of the social ladder? Did that not accord her some privileges, like delegating the mule work to another? But alas, she was far too controlling to relinquish all of the liquor. She wanted to hold it, and yet she didn't want the burden. An impossible desire. It only made it worse that July was aware of the contradiction. The word seemed to haunt her every movement lately.

When the door swung back to reveal Janice, she felt a moment's surprise, and then gratification. She pretty much knew where she stood with the girl, although the way her cheeks flushed at the sight of Gaius was a bit of a surprise. Not completely (because who could resist?) and not wholly unwelcomed either. He could do a lot worse, and as she still didn't want to involve her best friend in her scheming, it would be convenient if he dated someone else.

Not that she wouldn't be jealous and bitchy about it, anyhow. July managed a sly smile as she followed behind Gaius over the threshold. Of course then Adawna made her bumbling debut. How in Panem someone could get so drunk so fast escaped July, but she couldn't help be a little envious, too. She held her liquor entirely too well. It wasn't any fun most of the time.

Another flickered glance at Janice and Gaius, and July rolled her eyes as dramatically as she could manage. "Better find a closet to lock her in," she said, allowing her voice to carry down the hallway. She slid past Gaius, fingers slipping down his arm and over the penned PROPERTY OF JULY JACQUEZ as she brushed past. A harmless reminder. And then she was at Adawna's side, palm open. "Why don't I carry that canteen for you for a bit, hmm? That's a girl."

Adawna takes in her friends words. What downers I'm nowhere near as drunk as I wanna be yet.

“Which of us is locked in a closet July?” The words leave her mouth before passing her brain. Perhaps that's wouldn't be such an issue if she hadn't nearly shouted the statement. She contemplates for a second that she might have already overstepped her limits. Only for a second. Worry about the person's buttons she's pushing doesn't work it's way passed the alcohol. She meets July's eyes as she attempts to separate Adawna from the source of her new bliss. She pauses slightly for effect tilting her head to the right then:

“NEVER!” she yells clutching the canteen to her chest and letting out a manic giggle. She continues her crazed laughter as she skips away from July and down the hall. “Can't stop meeeeeee”

She doesn't know if July will attempt to chase her, she doubts it. Such behavior is the kind July always seems to put beneath her. Regardless Adawna continues deeper into the house in the hopes that she'll find herself someone who'll keep up with her fun rather then try and take it from her. She doesn't really know her way around this place so, purpose not being quite defined, she began wandering around and exploring the first floor. She keeps her ears open and thinks she hears voices but every time she remembers to move in that direction another room distracts her from her goals.

She opens a large oak door to reveal a darkened dance hall. Small by capitol standards with a cozy bar area against one wall. Large tinted windows surround the whole room and from the center of the ceiling dangles a crystal chandelier. Adawna's eyes widen as she steps into the room. The polished black floor and darkened windows reflect her hundreds of times around the room. She walks unsteadily to the center of the room and looks directly up at the chandelier. Fragmented pieces of brown, white, and blue bounce back to her. Herself divided into a million parts, she smiles adding another shade of white to the scene. She tips back another gulp from her canteen in a toast to the empty room.

Watching Adawna storm off and being side by side with Janice was a fair combination, but... he was at a party, and he'd be damned if he didn't seek a bit of enjoyment. "She's smashed already..." Gaius muttered, looking at Adawna but making sure Janice would hear him.

Taking Janice's half for a brief moment, he looked her directly in the eye- certain sorts of people responded well to direct eye contact, and from what little experience he had with Janice, he knew her to be one of them. "Excuse me for a moment," he began, "I think I might have to stop something very... very bad from happening in the next few moments- to do that, I need to calm her down. Meet me at the top of the stairs in ninety minutes- I'll be done by then."

With that, he waited a short moment for a response, and took off to follow the girl that was still barely in his sights. Seeing her open a large wooden door, he broke into a run to close the distance between himself and the door- not because he was particularly in a hurry, but because it was just second nature. Running is faster than walking. Speed saves time. The energy that's spent running comes back, but time never comes back. Life was short, after all- that's why he took time so seriously. In fact, that's also why he was chasing after Adawna.

He wasn't there to stop her from overdrinking, in reality. In fact, he was there to see the result. Romantically, he had little to no interest in her, but there was no denying that Adawna had a sort of eccentricity that was hard for even her fellow Capitolites to match- a 'stage presence' that occurred in real life. Whether she was drunk or sober, she was fun, and with life being as short as it was, people like Adawna were outright necessary. "Hello," he opened. And now, we see what happens...

The room was beautifully quiet, every slight shuffle of Adawna's feet, ever breath of air seemed to echo continuously. The slight shift of air and sound signaled the inward swing of a door perfectly balanced and build to go un-noticed. Adawna shifted her gaze away from her fractured reflection to meet eyes with the person now sharing the room.

“Giaus” she said giving him a slight tilt of her head before returning her gaze to the crystal above. He was the last person I would have expected to follow me here, she thought. Her mind shifted through the last few moments locking on to both the words on his arm and the colour in Janice's cheek when they entered the house. She found herself moving in a slight circle as a way to try and sort through her confusion, why would her rather be here then there?

“Ever think about what it might feel like to have one of these land on you” she said verbalizing a track her mind had taken moments ago. She spoke simply to chase away any awkward silence, but her words lacking any kind of barrier between brain and mouth threated to make the awkwardness that might be present worse. “Do you think you'd just die from being crushed or would ya get to feel every little piece cut you up... would you feel the crystal cutting into your skin as you bled out? Maybe nothing vital would be hit and you'd just lay there for what seemed like eternity watching as your blood add a pretty ruby tint to this oh so dark floor...”

Her words trailed away near the end as she weaved her way to the bar on the far wall. She took another sip of moonshine before setting her drink on the table and giving a slight laugh. She turned from the polished surface to face her company bright smile on her face like she had found nothing dark about her topic of conversation, because she hadn't.

“I think I like this room” she said off-handedly. “I do, why I'm here. So why is Giaus?”

She let herself up onto the counter of the bar swinging her legs underneath her. Adawna had to wonder what Giaus was thinking in making this his destination. She was the strange artsy girl who seemed hang onto her popularity purely through half-obtained connections and a constant ability to amuse. She didn't resent these facts they left her with more then enough company when she wanted it and more then enough fun. Whatever her perception of fun happened to be at that moment, or however far it strayed from the others.

It didn't take long for him to determine that he had done quite a job of choosing his entertainment for the evening. It was much better for him to be doing this than doing something the owner wouldn't approve of... followed by a number of men in white with machine guns who didn't take kindly to it, either. Maybe the fact that Adawna was going to be his 'safe' option for the day meant that he was leading a laughably dangerous life, but he didn't imagine that he would live long anyway.

Gaius did like her quip, though. He found it to be quite poetic- the deep, dark meaning behind her words was made fascinating by the cheery, genuinely curious tone of her voice. Though Gaius had invented the word Quotability himself, there was no arguing that the question had more of it than anything the dull folk on the other side of the door he had entered would have to say. Still, there was one part of it he didn't quite understand. "...Have one of what land on you?"

He nodded, waving a hand at her amiably. "I am also here because I like the room," he countered. "It isn't quite as crowded as the main foyer out there, and this table? Wouldn't mind one like it in my living room." Perhaps even the same one? ...No, no taking anything from this house... tonight.

One hand open, the other one her hip, July stood before Adawna, waiting for her to relinquish her hold on the canteen. But July had seriously underestimate the girl. Gravely. The world slapped sideways across her face, made her blink and hold tightly to her close eyelids, squeezing them shut. How could she say that? How could anyone else know when she didn’t even really know herself?

She stayed like that for too long, dumbstruck and hiding behind closed eyelids. By the time she recovered her poise, Adawna was gone. It was too late to make some snide remark, to roll it off her shoulders as a joke, to smack Adawna with all the fury and passion she felt radiating from her chest. It was too late for everything. July looked down the hallway, suddenly lost and confused, and then back. Gaius was gone, her Gaius. “What the hell?”

Taking short, clipped steps, July walked to Janice’s side. Somehow this was her fault. Probably because she was supposed to be the host. And what had she done about it? July’s gaze narrowed. “This party is the suck. Thought you could do better.” July shrugged, suddenly back in the game. “Guess not.”

With that, she brushed her blonde curls over her shoulder as though nothing in the world was amiss, even though her organs seemed to curling around one another. With a light sniff, she turned and strode, the picture of confidence, down the hallway, looking for a new distraction, conscious of the swinging canteen at her side. If she didn’t finish it in the next hour, she was a fool and doomed. With a deep breath, she lifted it, flicked the cap up with her tongue, and pulled so hard the liquid burned her tongue, throat, and stomach. It still wasn’t enough to block out Adawna’s words.

Walking in between the tall buildings of the Capitol was something I was used to. Although I was well off with money, purchasing a car was never on the top of my list. The places I needed to go were always close enough that walking would get me there just as effectively. And if I needed to get somewhere quicker, I had a bicycle. Maybe I should have interest in getting a vehicle. It was a beneficial investment. It would mean that getting to parties and school and work and friend's houses wouldn't be so tiring and it wouldn't take as long. That was a good thing, right? Still, walking didn't bother me at all. And I walked today, even under the boiling sun. I was wearing a simple plaid shirt, enjoying the breeze that often passed through it and across my bare chest. It was a beautiful day out but sometimes things got too hot.

I pulled the small slip of paper from my pocket, eyeing the mix of letters and numbers that matched up with one of the houses along this road. One of my friends had said that we could hang out there and then proceeded to give us all the address. I normally didn't do much at the parties. Maybe have on drink while sitting around. I was the one who would bring them home safe and make sure that nobody took advantage of their drunken or drugged self. I didn't want others having to worry about keeping me safe. They didn't deserve that. They deserved to have a great night and not have to worry about what might happen to them or their friends while they were unable to control themselves because of the various things offered at our typical parties. So, I'd take a bottle and just find a comfortable chair to relax in until I was needed.

That was my plan at least. My plans never succeeded. Somehow, I'd end up getting even more stressed from the process of things. But everybody else would benefit from the situation so that was good. And well, as I approached the home that matched the address, my plan kind of disappeared from the front of my mind. It looked out of place almost because of how large it was, compared to the buildings around it. I double checked with the slip of paper, insuring that I was actually at the right place. Um wow. I think to myself, staring up at the elegant looking home. I clear my throat and fix the top button of my shirt before making my way up the front steps to the door. I moved my hand forward to knock on the door, stopping a bit before it. Did I really need to knock? Most would already be drunk before the rest of the guests got there.

So, I pushed forward on the door, hoping to see it open. But it was stuck closed. Locked? Am I the first one? I check my watch. It was the time that we were supposed to meet at. I pulled as hard as I could, only to stumble back as the door swung open. Of course it's a pull. I make my way in, hoping that nobody saw that embarrassing action. The house was truly amazing. It seemed to have a very royal and important feel to it. I wiped my shoes off on the front carpet, noticing that nobody else's shoes were nearby. There wouldn't be much dirt on the bottom so I made my way into the home with them on, being careful to not step on something that would be hard to rid of dirt and whatever came off of my shoe.

I heard footsteps behind me so I quickly turned around. My elbow came in contact with some sort of pillar and I saw it begin to tip out of the corner of my eye. I immediately placed my arm under it, hoping to keep it up. And luckily, I caught it in time, straightening it back up. I needed to be more careful in this home. Evidently, I was having a clumsy day and with all these expensive things around me, I needed to be more careful. My steps were more careful then. I just wanted to find where everybody was. And then I found them, all together. I stepped into the room, flashing a smile and waving. "Hey guys."
