The moon danced agilely across the sky, a band of fluffy white clouds racing after it, invisible claws ready to strike. The Gathering Island was moonwashed, the trees dappled with pale gray. Cats were making their way onto the island, noses twitching and fur fluffed out by the wind. A tortoiseshell she-cat pushed through the crowd, amber eyes bright.
"Wildpaw!"
Said apprentice glanced up, smiling. "Hello, Brightpaw."
The dark brown tabby pressed his nose to his friend's, and she felt her cheeks grow hot.
"I have something to tell you."
"What is it?"
Her heart thrummed painfully against her ribs. "I- I love you, Wildpaw."
A deadly silence followed. Brightpaw waited for an "I love you too."
But Wildpaw merely shook his head. "I'm sorry, Brightpaw. I just don't feel the same way. We're still friends though, right?"
The world seemed to stop. The leaders were silent, the cats were not cheering, and the bare branches moved soundlessly. Wildpaw didn't love her? Brightpaw was injured. Wounded. She was dead, slaughtered by the claws of hate.
Still friends.
As far as she was concerned, Wildpaw was not her friend. Friends loved and cared for each other. Wildpaw was not her friend. She trembled, mouth hanging open. Brightpaw whimpered, leaping to her paws and dashing away.
"Brightpaw! Wait!"
Every cat that sat on that very island was just as shocked as the ShadowClan apprentice. The cats that had been shouldered aside, the leaders that watched from the trees, and the apprentices that shook their heads, mumbling, "whiny kit."
Wildpaw was about to run after Brightpaw, but a warrior stopped him. "The kit's not worth it."
Brightpaw still crouched in front of the island, listening. All voices seemed like Wildpaw's now. She was not worth it. Her eyes stung, and her heart ached. So this was what it felt like to have your heart broken. Darkfur had mentioned it to her before, how her mate had left her. Wildpaw could have been my mate.
Brightpaw padded slowly back to WindClan camp, tail dragging in the dust. Her vision was distorted, blurred with hatred. She hated Wildpaw. As soon as she returned to camp, she threw herself down in her nest, wrapping her tail around her. She only blinked when her eyes began to burn, and only moved when her limbs were as stiff as an elder's. She was slowly dying inside. Wildpaw had destroyed her.
Brightpaw drew in a breath. If Bramblepaw saw her now, she'd say that these actions were foolish. Tanglepaw would tell her to stop being so angsty. Hawkpaw would yell at her to forget about it. Swiftpaw would try to console her. It had happened before, and she was sure it would happen again. She missed Wildpaw just as she did her late mother; but more sorrow had possessed her this time.
Possession.
The word made her sick to her stomach. Why did some cats just think they could take over another's body, or try to control their actions?
Wildpaw. Possession. Hate. Possess. Wildpaw.
Her mind was racing, and she suddenly felt dizzy. What would Wildpaw be thinking about her? The kit wasn’t worth it? I'm not worth it?
Her limbs suddenly felt numb, and it was like she couldn't speak. It was like she was being lifted off the ground. Her hackles were raised, and she let out an earsplitting yowl. The numbness was replaced by a burning sensation, and her eyes stung. When the pain subsided, a gruff laugh fell past Brightpaw's lips.
"I'm back. And the Clans won't know what's coming for them."

"Easy, Brightpaw. To the border we go, kit."
Brightpaw knew that wasn't her voice. She tried to speak, but found herself unable to control her body. Why is this happening to me?
"Oh, RiverClan, you're going to get a surprise." Brightpaw would've clawed her own ears off if she could. What are you doing?
The tortoiseshell she-cat stopped to sniff the air. No one had been here for a while. Glancing around, she padded onto the marsh. What was available for prey here? What did RiverClan eat but fish? Probably nothing. She shook this thought away as soon as a mouse crept into view. "Perfect."
She crept towards the white rodent, grinning. She hooked its ear with a claw, and she dragged it towards her, nipping its neck.
"Hey! Thief!"
Brightpaw glanced up. "I'm not a thief. Did I walk up to you and take-"
She stopped. The speaker was a thin, sickly looking kit. "Ha! You're only a kit! You think you can stop me from taking this prey?"
The kit's claws came out. "I can, and I will!" he squeaked indignantly.
Brightpaw let out a battle cry, lunging for her opponent. He dare challenge her? The kit sank his tiny claws into Brightpaw's leg, and she merely shook him off. The kit came running back, and Brightpaw sliced through his ear. The thin gray kit screamed, blood dripping down his face. Brightpaw grinned, slashing his eyes. Another screech followed. The tortoiseshell she-cat picked him up again, throwing him across the marsh. The kit howled in pain and fear. "Stop, please! You can have the prey!"
Brightpaw didn't listen; she continued to tear at the kit's body. He cried out, blood spurting from countless wounds. His glazed eyes rolled back in his head, and he went limp. Even so, Brightpaw continued to nip at his neck, watching blood pool around him. Her teeth and claws were bloodstained, and she purred maniacally.
Brightpaw turned, trotting back over to the mouse and picking it up. The tortoiseshell apprentice made her way back over the border, not before rolling in a puddle to clean her fur of blood and the scent of death. She then slipped back into camp, setting her catch on the freshkill pile, and retreating to the apprentice den. As she lay down in her nest, she thought about what she had done. What had she done?
