Hey, white liar

The truth comes out a little at a time

Everyone deserves a little time to be alone. I think about whether or not this is true as I return from my solo hike through the woods. Escaping from the rest of the district, from home, from work, even from Harmony, is a beautiful thing by itself. I've never really known the term loneliness. Perhaps because I prefer being by myself, or maybe because I've never been away from people for more than a day.

I should be happy. I should be glad and grateful for what I have. Work. A house, even if it is shared with my girlfriend and her parents. Food on the table. And of course, Harmony, a girlfriend who loves me. Except lately, things have gone slightly awry. No, we're not breaking up or anything. But she's been acting a bit strangely recently... She hasn't acknowledged it, and I haven't tried to ask her anything about it either. If it goes on, then maybe I'll confront her about it. But as for right now, I feel like I can trust her.

The woods remind me of only her, of course. I can never forget the weeks we spent, in solitary confinement, separated from our peers by a thick wall of pine. Except it was more of a vacation than it was confinement. No, we were enjoying ourselves too much to call it that. That little camp by the river... That was the site of numerous things. Our nights of staring up at the stars, talks of our future, storytelling about our past, our first time. Yeah, it was special. Very special indeed.

That is why, today, I chose to go and visit it. Relive some of the fond memories. Images of our growing relationship and new love still flood my mind. It's kept my heart fluttering all day, my breath almost heavy, despite the crisp, fresh air. I couldn't have picked a better day to go on a nice hike, really. I hardly even needed the water I packed. Although drinking from the river again was a nice little touch. It's one of the flavors of our love. ~~Not to be dirty.~~

I'm currently walking back towards home. Home. That word has gone through quite a variety of changes in definition. There's the house I grew up in with my brother. Then the house I grew up in, but with my brother gone. Then the woods, with Harmony. Now with Harmony and her parents. I haven't talked to my parents since I left, by the way. I think I saw them at the market once, but I avoided them. I can't let them see me again. It won't do me any good.

The sun is low in the sky. I judge it as about 4 o'clock in the evening right now. My stomach growls lightly, but I don't reach for any of the food in my pack. I'd like to save dinnertime for tonight, with Harmony.

Birds sing and chirp all around me. As I crunch through the leaves over the soft bed of pine needles, I whistle a small tune. One that I came up with years ago. There are still no words to go with it. But, the mockingjays take it and do marvelous things with it. They bounce it around, changing and tweaking it to their own bird style, singing and whistling better than I ever could. I grin, amazed by nature's wonders. Nature is something I could never stop appreciating.

I take the rest of my walk lightly, allowing my mind to wander. I'm beginning to tire more, and I really want a nice shower and a cozy bed. Trails have finally started appearing, and I hear a few workers, indicating that I'm close to town. Everyone will be working for another two or three hours, until the sun sets. I know Harmony is usually at her mother's small shop right now, so I keep my feet directed on the way to the center of the town.

The hustle bustle of the town is normal on a Friday night. People are enjoying the cool air, and everyone just seems really friendly. Something else to add to my good mood. That's a good thing, I guess. I wouldn't want to see Harmony for the first time today in an upset mood. But everything is just making me feel rather happy. I even smile at a few people upon eye contact, my cold blue eyes meeting theirs. I sometimes miss the days when I could manipulate someone with just a glance. But those times are long gone.

Stepping over the neat, cobblestone ground of the square's off streets, I find myself in front of Harmony's shop. Low roof, long shape. Squat would be a good word to describe it. The peeling paint coming off of the thick wooden walls make it slightly unappealing. Her dad and I can fix that. I push open the door, greeted by the scents of a multitude of herbs. The smell reminds me of Harmony, when she sometimes comes home smelling like the shop.

A variety of leaves, powders, jars, and flowers line the shelves around the store. The one in front of me, housing several bags of bay leaves and other herbs, covers the main register from view. I know Harmony is probably right behind the counter, preparing to close up for the day. I hear a small laugh, and I instantly know it's hers. It brings a grin to my face. Her laugh is so soft and contagious, it's so cute. I turn around the corner of the shelf, and the smile on my face is instantly wiped right off. Because I do not like what I'm seeing.

Flint Lockwood. The only name I can think of for him is douche. He's hottie of all District 7 hotties. At least, that's what everyone seems to think about him. I just think he's annoying and thinks he's all that. The endless rows of girls bowing down to him have surely gone to his head. But I'm standing here, seeing him, making my girlfriend giggle. His back is halfway turned to me, but I'm almost positive he has that stupid smirk on his face right now. The one that makes my stomach hurt. I'm ready to go over there and grab him, tear him away from Harmony. She shouldn't be around him. He has no business here.

Today I asked Flint to come to the shop, help me out with things since my mom is home sick. I was happy when he agreed, not that I doubted that he would because he fell for me hard. The next day he came to the shop right on time, and did whatever I asked without complaint. I didn’t take advantage of him though, that wasn’t in my nature. I wasn’t one of those girls who used guys to their advantage.

So we worked that day, and we worked well. We had a very nice amount of customers and I taught him a bit about the different herbs and flowers. A few times he tried to flirt with me, but I just ignored it, and I think he got the message. He knew I had a boyfriend and he knew he had to respect that. Well, I hoped he did. Honestly, people did stereotype him way too much on his looks. He wasn’t as much of a douche as everybody thought he was. Once you knew him, he was really sweet and helpful, but careful, he might end up having a major crush on you!

When lunch came, we headed out to the market and I used some of our earning s to buy some apples. We had a nice conversation, honestly, very normal and down to earth. Most of it was about the reaping and Games. Some on how Klaus won in District three and about all the other tributes who died. I even knew one of them, the boy, Amadeus. It was very horrible to see him perish, but I was kind of happy we weren’t very close, because I don’t deal with loss very well.

After lunch we continued working for the rest of the day until it came time to clean up. He swept and I organized all the herbs by name. After sweeping, he helped me finish off the medicinal powders. As I stack them on the shelf, one slips off and the cap falls off, pouring the yellow powder all over us. I couldn’t help but started laughing like a maniac and we started brushing each other off, joking about how funny we looked.

Ring! That familiar sound notioned that a customer was here, before I could look who it was, vern rounded the corner, and his smile faded rather quickly. I stared at him a little confused, but then realized. Was he really unhappy with Flint being with me? Or was it the fact that we were enjoying each other’s company. I quickly brushed the powder off of my lap and hair and turned to face him, a small smile plastered across my lips, ”Oh, hey Vern!”

[/color] I knew Vern was skeptical about all this. He know who Flint was, and he knew every girl practically worshiped him becasue of his looks. What he didn't know was that we used to be good friends, what he didn't know is he had a crush on me. Now that I look back on it, I haven't been paying as much attention to Vern as maybe I should have. I hope this didn't make him extra suspicious. It was still my own life though, and I can be friends with who I want.

And I knew it was over, by the time we had walked out of the forest. No hand in hand, hand over her shoulder like I planned. No kissing, no lips crashing into each other. Just friends, friends for life. Something that was maybe good. Yes I know that every time I look at her and watch her move swiftly along the ground that my heart skips a beat. And every time she brushes her hand against my arm, I shiver slightly. Everything is true, but I know it could never be true. Especially when she had asked me personally to help her in the store. Something I would only do for a good friend, and something she would only ask from a good friend. As I had walked there, to the store. I had reflected on the things about being her boyfriend and Vern, the man that held the heart of one of the most beautiful in the district. Thinking about all these things had truly shown me. I could not steal a girl from the a boy that I had even talked to. Even though every time I see her a sudden urge to comb back my hair is present. No matters, I am a true friend. Not a backstabbing, lying, girlfriend stealing guy.

And there I was for most of the day, spending my time working at the store. Fixing the wooden planks that came loose, sorting out the herbs and flowers and learning a thing or two about which ones I could eat. Repairing whatever I could, because the reason her mom was sick and she wanted a friend to work with. And she had picked me, so I might of said earlier I would not steal his girlfriend. But does that not stop me from sending a few signals? Touching her shoulder, brushing against her as I move to fix a vase. I had done all that and more with the few glances from her that when it was lunch. I knew I had to back off. Then we ate, bought two apples and ate together. Sitting on a bench out in the sun that melted the whole place. With sweat dotted on our foreheads and the paint almost dripping off the shops surrounding us. Giving us an unforgiving smell that forced us to head back to the store and finish up our apples there. With gossip and the latest news, girls do that don’t they. And don’t they like a man who can keep up with them? I know I would if I was, erm a woman. Which just proves my mind is melting from the heat.

The sun must be the problem because my work is just getting worst as one hit to the wall with my broom stick left both of us covered in powder as one of the shelf’s, I had just fixed. It hit the ground and a bottle exploded in a fury of yellow powder. But only the sound of laughing was heard as each of us took our time rubbing it off of each other. Like a dog, I shook my head and it scattered everywhere. Gaining a burst of giggles from Harmony until the door rang and both of us went calm because it might have been a customer. But it was not, it was the man of the hour. Vern, from the excited squeak from Harmony. I could almost feel his eyes digging into my back, burrowing all his angry into one spot on my back. All of a sudden nervousness hit me, what would I say to him? “Oh sorry was just playing around with your girlfriend?” No, that would not work. And so I turned around to face him, eye to eye with a small glisten in my eye. Wiping of the smile that I used with Harmony and gave him a smile. A man to man smile.

“Hello Vern, good to see you,” I said casually as I wiped the remaining powder off my arm and grabbed the broom handle. “I was just helping Harmony here, she asked me to help run the store while her mother was sick. But I don’t think we are doing such a good job,” Laughing, I pointed to the mess. Trying to lighten up the awkward mood in the room. But I knew Vern was not pleased.

I give Harmony a halfhearted smile, but it's hard to act happy when I'm actually so upset. A twitch has worked its way into my fingers, which are now tapping rapidly on my leg and playing with the fabric of my pants.

Flint turns around and says hello, causing me to clench my teeth. He's smiling at me nicely, but for some reason I take it as a smug look. As if he's telling me, haha, I'm talking to your girlfriend. He could be thinking it, but I can't just punch him in the face for something I assume he wants to say. “I was just helping Harmony here, she asked me to help run the store while her mother was sick. But I don’t think we are doing such a good job,” he tells me, chuckling. I look over him and Harmony, seeing that they'd been trying to get some herbal powder off of them. It's all over the counter and floor, too, so I guess one of them must have spilled something.

I shoot Flint an ugly look as I step behind the counter to Harmony. I'd normally give her a kiss as a greeting right now, but something makes me ignore it. "It's getting late, you know. Shouldn't you be closing up the shop soon?" I say to her. I know it's technically a bit early to close up, but sometimes they will go home early, and I'm desperate for a reason to take Harmony home, away from Flint.
