What is a summer day without the sun? What is winter without a little snow? Nothing can be anything without the assistance of others; nothing can be done by only one force. All except for tightrope walking, it only takes one lady to place her toes on the thin wire and prance across, grace is the key to everything. Without safety nets, without harnesses binding her torso, Esther dances to the tune of death. She defies it above all else. Right foot, Left turn, the touch of death will never come to her icy skin as she stands perched on the wire, only the freedom of a bird.

The circus is her most favorite thing, the frilly costumes and heavy make-up that stains her skin. Esther loves to hear the sound of people cheering and the feeling of pride as she know that it is her that made them happy, it was all her. Her smile turns just a bit more bright as she waves back, Bell tells her not to do such childish things though. Only in her dreams does Esther ever wave back to her expecting fans. Why not? Real life was with the living though and daydreaming, Bell said, wasn't healthy. Slowly she came back to reality of it all.

Esther began to work her way into her dress, first her right foot, than her left arm. It all followed a strict pattern that would result in perfection, why would anyone take the different path if they knew that a set of directions could lead them to glory and fame for the rest of their lives. Esther could never understand any other people besides her sisters; they knew exactly what she was forced to endure. Never would one of them, with their soft smiles and narrowed eyes, hurt her. She knew it deep in her heart.

The dress was soft with little frills at the sides and a tank-top sort of appearance near the shoulders. Esther needed clothes that would allow her to move freely, any sort of burdening thing would have her crashing to the earth in mere seconds.

She willed herself to strap up the back and put on a stone-hard face, this was her only chance. Preparing was the hard part, getting ready to walk into the light and force herself to a possible death every time. Practice makes perfection though, at least that was Bell has always said to her, such things as harnesses and safety supports were only used in practices, real life had none of that, you were expected to hold yourself up. Strings cut and let loose in the world no one is there to help you anymore, a puppet left out for the elements. It would be foolish for Esther to admit that she wasn’t scared; every time she performs it’s a new wave of fear that threatens to engulf her as she puts on a brave smile and heads out to the stage.

It took will and self-confidence for her to emerge into the light and walk out to the people, blindness over coming her as she climbed up the familiar ladder that led up to her possible death. She was not afraid, that was a lie. Each step could mean falling into oblivion.

And slowly she went, out onto the wire, Left foot, right foot, right turn, left duck, She had it all planned out.

Then the other side came flying at her and the whole thing was over with, a second of fear that erupted into laughing and smiles. It was for their enjoyment, the waving and standing people made Esther happy, she adored those who watched her.

Life was all about adoration, that simple word that over time took over Esther. To her, it was no longer a word more than a feeling of tingling happiness down her spine. The cheering was worth it.

Every second of it.

(I'm sorry it took so long for me to write this, I'll code my next post, I'm just lazy and trying to get all of my threads updated so yeah. ^^

It all starts with a simple question. Why am I here? Standing before this dust covered mirror admiring my sloped jaw and the cute gap in my teeth. In all honesty, I have no idea how I'm here or why. Everyone has a purpose, I suppose this is mine. My girls convinced me, I guess. They whispered about it for days, stealing glances my way as I paced the house, debating. That's how it started. Peer pressure. My bright red lips curved into a mischievous smile. It wasn't entirely their idea. I had to give the OK on it, and I knew who I was going to be before I made the decision. I was going to be in the spotlight, literally. The Ring Master. Besides I didn't have talents like my girls did, I was just good at being bossy and I was completely fine with that.

I began to pat myself with a sponge dipped in cheap foundation. One blemish gone, two, three. That bit of extra redness on my face toned down. I loved makeup. It was my favorite thing, watching my face transform. I ran the brown powder down my cheeks instead of blush. I remember what Mother called it. Contouring. It sounded so fancy. I took the brown across my eyelids, powder going everywhere. I took black across my lashes. Mascara. 'Mother's out there.' And if she truly is? I have to look stunning. I left my hair cascading down my shoulders and shrugged on the red jacket with gold trim. I traded some of mother's pearl necklaces for it. Black shirt beneath it and black pants. Both of which I had owned for awhile now. Cowboy boots because why not? And of course my bright red lips to match the jacket.

I could see Esther putting on her dress in a very peculiar manner, as she did every performance. It was like her ritual, like she couldn't fail as long as she did it perfect. Right foot, left arm. I mentally noted the pattern, a ghost of a smile twitching on my face. I loved her. She might not be 'normal'... but who was anyway? We all had issues. She had Mother in her, it was adorable. I found myself distracted by her, even know as I was due on 'stage'. I had to force myself to stop watching her like a Mother hawk. "Esther!" I called in a sing-song voice, putting on a broad smile. "Make Momma proud, girl." I winked like the cool big sister I was and slipped out from the back stage area and out onto the wooden panels. Kids pointed, men and women clapped. Hold onto your hats.

I raised my hands out from my body and laughed joyfully, soaking in their adoration of my existence. 'That's right, clap your hands together.' I could hear children giggling, women whispering, men whooping. Ha. Probably at the end of the night I would be dealing with some of those. As the adoration died down, I dropped my hands and pulled a dramatic voice. "Ladies and gentlemen..." I boomed, twirling around on my heels. "Boys and girls! Welcome to the Thomas Circus!" My eyes scanned the audience with glee as I continued on. "We have a lion tamer! A contortionist! A tight-rope walker! A juggler! Our very adorable clown! Plus the amazing trapeze twins!" Clapping. More clapping. Yes. Adore us.

Just then all the lights cut out. There were a few gasps but I knew what was going on. The only reason my heart rate sped up was because Esther was doing the one of the more dangerous acts. 'C'mon baby, do it for Momma.' I inhaled sharply as she stepped up onto the wire, the lights suddenly beaming on her. 'Don't blind her. Don't blind her.' I went through this ritual every time. She pranced across that string-like wire like a pro and the crowd erupted into cheers. I joined in, relief laced around my slightly forced laughter. She warmed the crowd up, got their heart rate up. It was perfect. She was perfect. Sometimes I couldn't stand her, but right now I was the damn proudest sister the world had ever seen.

"Everybody! Another round of applause for the amazing Esther the Tightrope Walker!"

Gala & Gwen Thomas

The Trapeze Twins

"Hurry up!" Gala demanded to her identical twin Gwen. Dressed in matching leotards that clung like a second skin, Gwen was still designing her face as if the audience sat a foot in front of her as the twins flipped through the air. Purple and Black patched the girls clothing and make-up making their color appearance opposite as many twins dressed when forced to wear the same outfit.

"One second!" Gwen tried to buy more time as she finished her eyeshadow in the broken mirror in their small dressing room. The lights were turned off in the circus auditorium, and Gala could hear the sound of Bluebell's voice on the mic.

"Bluebell's on!" Gala screamed to Gwen. They were always the last act, and loved to sneak to the back and watch all their sisters perform. They loved their sisters so much, and looked up to all of them like Gods. There was only one that held younger the twins, but even Elody was looked up to by them, waiting for the day she would spring up taller then the tiny light twins.

"Okay done!" Gwen squeaked as she sprung up to grab Gala's hand and rush to the entertainment. Hollering and screaming from under the bleachers, their oldest sister was on and looking amazing as always as she introduced Esther. More screams and claps came from the blue-eyed girls as they witnessed Esther appear with a spot light way up in the air. Holding their breathe as Esther did the dangerous tricks on a small wire high in the air, the twins bursted with excitement when she finished her routine successfully.

Their eyes going back to Bluebell they waited for the announcement of their next sister. The trapeze twins were introduced. For a second it didn't phase Gala and Gwen who at first didn't realize it was them, they thought they were last. Then again Bluebell always did tell the girls to stay in their dressing rooms incase of a sudden order change.

"That's us." Gwen whispered to Gala, who was unable to keep a straight face looking at Gwen all dressed up though she looked the same. Quickly they jumped out of under the bleachers, where a spot light found the small identical girls in front of the entrance. That wasn't where they were suppose to come from, but still the crowd went wild as they made their way to their feat and to their stage. Hopefully they wouldn't get into too much trouble over this.

Both taking a seat on the beam, they were raised up into the air to begin their act. Gala flew backwards, with Gwen grasping her hands to hang in midair with only Gala's legs wrapped around the beam holding them up. They did their regular flips and tricks that Gwen choreographed, and Gala could easily follow with her strength to hold them both up. Landing on their feet from a ten foot drop and taking a bow, the crowd went crazy as they did for every act. Smiling huge they exited where they were suppose to enter, hoping their sisters wouldn't notice their change of entrance.

I saw the autumn leaves peel up off the street,
take wing on the balmy breeze and sweep you off your feet.
You blushed as they scooped you up on sugar maple wings,
to gaze down on the city below, ablaze with wondrous things.

Tightropes and lions, the sounds of the circus fill my ears. They're the best of sounds, like music, the oohs and ahhs of the crowd drifting through the thick patchwork-crimson curtain behind me, the periodic clapping and a sharp whistle here and there as my sisters work their magic in the ring - a circus symphony that sings its way into my veins as I wait for my cue. May-bell sits on the worn wooden surface of the dressing room's single vanity, beady black eyes fixed on me as I slip into my costume - my favorite - red silk and black lace smooth against my skin as I reach all the way behind me and zip up the back with little effort, as my limbs are used to stretching in far more impossible ways. May-bell's nose twitches, whiskers wiggling. I think she's mad at me - she hasn't spoken to me at all today.

"I know you don't like the circus." My voice is soft and whisper-thin, 'cause May-bell don't like loud noises and that's why she don't like the circus, 'cause it's really loud sometimes with Bluebell's thunderous voice and the roar of the crowd. Her little mouse ears can't handle it all, I guess. "But it's not so bad, honest. Maybe I can get Bluebell to give you an act, and then you'd see." Her whiskers twitch again, but instead of answering she turns and scurries off the vanity and through a crack in the curtain, leaving me alone with the soft echoes of circus sounds. May-bell's my best friend, but she can be really rude sometimes.

But nothing can bring me down now, not when my eldest sister's voice is booming out my name. Not when the crowd is clapping and whooping, their enthusiasm almost tangible even in the dusty little room behind the scenes, roaring their excitement as the sounds fill my ears and paint my lips into a smile that shines brighter even than the spotlight that blares straight through cracks in the curtain, casting me in a red-hued halo, and it strikes me that not even heaven could ever feel likes this.

I leave the empty dressing room behind me as I part the curtains with a flourish, skipping forward one, two, three steps into the spotlight before I fling my arms out above my head and leap into a series of rolls and cartwheels and flips, coming up in the center of the ring in a ta-da! pose that sends the crowd into light applause, more amused than awed by my introduction. I smile, only slightly winded by the cutesy display, and then I'm ready to shine.

It only takes a little stretch of muscle, a few arcs and bends and twists that seem to defy the very laws of anatomy, and soon the crowd is reeling. Jaws drop and eyes widen in shock at the tiny little twelve year old with her chin pressed against the ground and the backs of her thighs resting on the top of her head, feet planted on the ground in front of her and limbs stretched to the limit. A few quick movements and suddenly I'm standing on my hands, the bottoms of my feet resting on my shoulders, body bent up in a backwards "C". I love the sharp intakes of breath from the audience, the bursts of applause at every impossible shape I twist my body into, the shocked mutterings from within the crowd - I relish in their disbelief, the awe and excitement that radiates from them. I love the smiles I see, the laughter I hear. I love every last bit of it, and nothing - no rude mice or dusty dressing rooms or raucous circus sounds - can ever take that away.

Nothing.

Can you feel a silk embrace in the satin air?
If we dissolve without a trace, will the real world even care?
Downy feathers kiss your face and flutter everywhere.
Reality is a lovely place but I wouldn’t want to live there.
