Snow makes it a lot easier to find dead animals as opposed to live ones. In my opinion, at least. Don’t tell Brig, but sometimes I’ll just track down some living vermin and just kill it so I’ll have something to bring back. If I don’t haul back anything, Brig won’t be happy. Bringing nothing back means less money, and less money means that we have to go on more grave robbing trips. I never really liked grave robbing, but it helps us pay to keep the little shop in business. It’s hard to find people that want to get taxidermies of wild animals even though most everyone in One is rich. We’re not, though; we may be on the slightly higher end of the society, the only surplus of money we have is just enough to allow us a little extra wiggle room.

But today I plan on giving us some more wiggle room. Bundled up in my tattered jacket, I trudge out through the snow, being as careful as I can while being on the lookout for any sort of tracks. As I ventured further from the shop, I came across what at first I thought were small handprints in the snow. Upon crouching, I realized that it was a possum trail. A small smile crosses my mouth. A possum isn’t the best catch, but if it’s all I can get then it’s alright.

I follow the tracks, being sure to not disturb them, and am unaware of my changing surroundings. The tracks scitter here, scatter there, and sometimes are faded underneath a fresh layer of snow that is still falling. I sniff, running the back of my glove across my nose and look up. I’ve managed to get into an alley and the tracks disappear underneath a rather large dumpster. A scowl crosses my face; I get down on my knees and look underneath the dumpster, but the possum isn’t there. Looking back up, I realize that there are hundreds of places that a scrawny little animal could hide in all this garbage. I stand and then head over to a series of metal trash cans, moving them around in an attempt to find the scoundrel possum.
