When I woke up this morning I found that my crown had fallen lopsided in the night. Surely tomorrow I will use more staples to fasten it in place - they do cost such a fortune yet it has to be done - until then I must wear it crumpled and torn. A paper crown is not fit for a princess and yet I'm scornful of anybody who thinks you can find better in this equally unfit land of torn fabric and sequins. (Try your hand searching for gold in this minefield of cotton wool and ribbon!) It's not like the high streets are brimming with jewels. Even the mermaids don't know where abouts to find the kinds of treasures I seek. Perhaps this I why nobody recognises my nobility; although the clothes I wear are exquisite and rare they can never compensate for my lack of tiara.

The three bears served Goldilocks tea as she eyed up their furniture. I pour my little sister a steaming cup from my plastic kettle and place it on the checkerboard tablecloth. My goldilocks. Perhaps like Papa she will protest that my tea is just pretending and the china dolls do not drink; perhaps I will laugh at her and scorn her and leave without goodbye. Today we are having tea. I only realised this a moment ago and yet now I know it is to be - (did the voices tell you again, Calico? No, sir, don't be absurd!) - and the bears are waiting all lined up in a row. (It was the elves from the factory below.) My sister is Goldilocks, filled with ambition and promises to herself she wont keep.

But me? I'm a believer.
