He found himself sitting at a school desk inside of District Twelve. He shouldn't have been there in the first place. It just wasn't his type of atmosphere. Too formal for his liking. "Samuel Webster. Please try to pay attention." The boy posing as Samuel Webster for the day looked up at the teacher's face. In an instant, he took in every wrinkle, fold, and twitch that the teacher showed on her face.
The boy looked down at the text that they had been reading with amazing emerald green eyes and found where he was supposed to start. "The Dark Days ended with the bombing of District Thirteen..." Just at that moment, the bell rang and the teacher dismissed her students. The boy posing as Samuel got up to leave when he noticed an engraving in the wood of the desk. G.T. Gwen Turo. He was out the door before anyone could see the tears welling up in his eyes.
The school day came to an end after tedious hours of work. All of the kids spilled out onto the streets with friends while the kid known as Samuel walked alone; his head down and hands thrust deep into his pockets. This kid wasn't really Samuel Webster. His real name was Tom West and Samuel was just one of his many aliases that he used. He had cut his usually medium length hair short and had placed his weapons in a hollow log outside the district. He wore a dark green shirt underneath a black leather jacket and black jeans. On his feet, he wore a pair of sneakers that were two sizes too big. A single strap backpack rested in the middle of his back and two concealed three inch knives rested on the inside of the strap so they were always pressed against his chest. A hand moved three occasionally to make sure that the knives were still there.
He was usually one to shy away from school, but today he was just going so he wouldn't be picked up as easily by the peacekeepers that were all over the place. He kept passing group after group of kids going about their lives with what would be called common sense by the Capitol. What they didn't know was how much more of a purpose they actually had.
Tom's thoughts returned to the engraving he had found earlier. The initials of his long lost girlfriend and fellow resistance member had still been carved into the very desk that he had sat at. A memory flashed through his mind of the smiling face of Gwen after a gruesome battle against a large mutt. He sat against the wall of a nearby house and put his head into his hands and cried. He was so caught up in his emotions that he didn't even hear the footsteps that were approaching.
