The day had dragged on for Nadia, crawling by slowly. It had been
unbearable. She could barely wait to start her shift at The Lab, one
of the no-card clubs in District Six, meaning anybody could get in.
This doesn't they give alcohol to minors. She wanted to hear the
blaring music again, feel the glossy wood of the bar and smooth
glass of the glasses, to smell he incenses that would burn during
the busier times to cover the stench of sweat.

When it came time for her to get ready for work, the redhead nearly
screamed in delight. She yanked the low cut black shirt of the
hanger, wrenched her mid-thigh length black skirt out of the dresser
and shoved her feet into the heeled black boots that came to her
knee. She tossed her fiery red hair into a ponytail and skipped out
of her, and her father's, house.

She skipped, singing "We're Off To See The Wizard", all the way to
The Lab, attracting a few stares. She smiled when she saw the line
already forming at the front door while she detoured to the back.
While it was a slow day for Nadia, it was sure gonna be a busy
night.

Mackenzie Brown

Today had been one of those days. The sort of day that made you think of the good ol' saying, "life sucks, then you die." I'd had yet another brush with the law, which left me in pain and lucky to be alive. I'd been fool enough to get caught stealing.
The sun was setting over the west of District Six as I strode down a long street near the middle of the District. I rubbed my bandaged back as I scanned for marks to pickpocket. Either I got some cash or I went hungry. C'est la vie. As I looked around, I noticed a long line in front of a mid-sized building. A neon sign indicated that it was The Lab, a card-free bar. I decided to give up for the day and proceeded in to drown my sorrows. I plopped down on a comfy barstool, and asked the bartender if she had anything alcohol-free, as I was sixteen. She had red hair, wore a black top, and looked affable.

It was one of those nights. Those nights where the only thing you want to do is just lie down and think. The hunger games had just ended, and Kolman had lost one of his good freinds Jango Graves. His dad had a run in with a thief at the lab. It turns out that the thief was a 16 year old girl named Mackenzie Brown. Kolman had seen her before on his walks to school. He had never talked to her; just glanced through his peripheral vision as he walked to school.

Instead of lying down and thinking tonight, Kolman decided to go to a bar and just drink. make believe that it was alcohol and drink it like it was. He stepped into the bar and laid his eyes on the girl who was sitting at the bar, drinking something: Mackenzie Brown. Kolman thought what he was going to say to her, and sat down next to her.

He gestured to the bartender that he wanted a Coke, and then said to Mackenzie, "I'm sorry for what happened a few nights ago. My dad was the scientist you ran into. I'm sorry for all the trouble you had to go through. I know that he would never say sorry. The lab is all he cares about. If he had a gun, he would have killed you right on the spot. But you never did answer why you tried to steal the crystals. I promise I won't tell if you tell me. It just seems so weird that you would go through all trouble of stealing the most valuable thing in the lab, unless you really needed them for something." The bartender gave Kolman his Coke. Kolman sipped it, waiting for a resonse.

Well, here's a good ol' coincidence. I'd walked past this guy at school, and only noticed him slightly. But here it was: he was the son of that old scientist from the lab. That had been my worst failure in my entire criminal career. Not something I was into talking about, for sure. And an "I promise I won't tell" doesn't mean jackshit to me, usually. But something about this guy made me want to speak the truth.

"This is going to sound stupid. I went through all that trouble for two reasons, the first being that I'm a thief. It's what I do, unfortunately. I don't know anyone hiring sixteen-year-old miscreants and money dosen't grow on trees. The second reason is that that crystal has value: both monetary and historical. You see, I know a guy called Daniel Halling. He's an archeologist. It's a long story, but I'll tell it." I leaned back a bit.

"You know anything about roman myths? There's one about a crystal just like that one, that says it was formed by Jupiter as a gift to his daughter Venus. The crystal is shaped like two pink columns, reaching towards each other. But the legend says that it started out as two white columns, reaching skyward, to symbolise power. But Venus was the goddess of love. She didn't like the gift so much. She turned it into it's current configuration, to represent her nature as the goddess of desire. Anyway, Jupiter got pissed about this, and threw it down to earth, where ancient people kept it as a sacred icon of Venus. It was originally found in the ruins of a temple in Europe. Fastforward a couple thousand years. This religious relic/crystal is on the verge of being examined by a lab in district six. But the examination techniques are invasive, and it would wreck the gem, scratch up its surface and dissamble the rock it's attached to. Enter Daniel Halling. He gets wind of this happening. Anyway, he's from another district and he thinks the fact that they're about to damage the crystal is disrepectful to the people who used to hold it sacred. He tried to get it honestly, but it didn't pan out. So he hired yours truly. Would've paid for a year's rent, if I'd suceeded." I turned to face Kolman.

"I guess I wanted to do something constructive, and rescue the artefact. But you can't always get what you want, can you?"
