Kingston

Corporal Kingston Price had been called to District Seven to investigate the murder of Mayor Jenny Hallings. He was traveling to the Mayors' simple home. This was Kingston's first time in the District and he was amazed by all the trees in the area.
"Wow. This place is really.. interesting." Kingston mumbled to himself. He reached the Mayors' simple home and stepped inside.
"Hello? It's Corporal Kingston Price. I was called here to investigate..." He called into the seemingly empty home.
"Where is everyone?" He wondered aloud. Kingston waited at the door for about five minutes, hoping for somebody to come in, but nobody did. Finally he became tired of standing around an ventured upstairs, looking for somebody, or something. He ended up in the Mayors' room, her bloody body sprawled out on the floor.
"Good god..." He sighed angrily. "Nobody deserves that.." Kingston was about to leave when something caught his attention.
"Hello?" He called out. Maybe, just maybe somebody had showed up to give him details...

I walk around the Mayor's house, shifting my hand through my shaggy brown hair. What happened to her? I just feel like collapsing on the ground and crying. But I won't. I will never, ever get that mental image out of my head. I am only 17. Suddenly, I hear footsteps behind me. "Hello?" a voice asks. I turn around and see a man. But it's not just any man. A Peacekeeper. "Oh thank god!" I say, running up to the man. Without him even asking, I explain the story.

"Every day, I bring freshly cut fire wood today. At about 12:00 today, I brought her the wood. I kept shouting her name, but I got no response. I figured she might be sleeping, so I went up to her room and there she was, in a puddle of blood." I choke out, nearly crying. "I have no idea who would have wanted to do this. She was the best mayor District 7 ever had." I say, still in disbelief. Our mayor is dead.

Silent as a whisper, Warren let herself into the mayor's house. For a crime scene, there weren't many peacekeepers around. It was better, of course. But it was worrisome, nonetheless. If they hadn't flocked to the body like buzzards, it was troubling. Did that mean that they had a lead, that the majority of the police force was hunting down the culprit?

Hopefully not. It would be a pain to have to fill a blank spot in the Guild. Assassins were not a dime a dozen. They'd need to push their apprentice to become a full-fledged member, and then find some other agile, talented kid to fill the void. And as the head of District 7's chapter of the Assassins Guild, any arrests of her members would reflect poorly on Warren. She didn't want that.

Don't worry so much, she told herself. It was just a performance review. That was her least favorite part of being District Leader: reviewing the work of her charges. Sometimes it could be interesting, and even educational--other members had interesting styles. Some were creative with their work. Many of them were very neat about their kills: little blood, no evidence.

Sloppy. It was the first thing that had come to mind when she'd entered the room. Blood was everywhere. The body itself looked as though it had been hacked to death.

Please tell me this is a frame-job. If the intention was not to set someone else up to take the fall for the assassination--one of Warren's personal specialties--then it was a very poor job. There was very little attention payed--

People! It seemed as though Warren herself needed to pay more attention. What a novice mistake! The veteran assassin had made mistakes that beginners didn't even. She'd walked into a room without being aware of her surroundings. Worse, one of them seemed to be a peacekeeper. Great. Just what she needed. An interview.

Warren began drafting a BS persona on the spot. Cath Hemlock. Would peacekeeper be too risky? Probably. Unemployed? No, artist. To sketch the crime scene. If only I could draw...

Kingston could hear footsteps downstairs. The kid looked like he was going to go crazy.
"Hold on kid. Don't blow a gasket. It's okay. Just stay here and I am going to check out something downstairs, okay?" He said, trying to comfort the kid. Kingston didn't wait for his answer. He had a deadline to make. He wanted to get back to his home in the Capitol. He wanted to get back home to his children and wife. He wanted to be there to protect them, should something as heinous as this were to befall them. Kingston began running the possible scenarios of who could be downstairs. The killer? No. Nobody would be that stupid. Maybe some type of dog, attracted by the smell of blood. I doubt that... Citizen of the District? I hope not... Hopefully, luck will shine her face on me, and it would be another Peacekeeper, come to either deal with the crying kid, or at least give me details on this horrific murder. Kingston could only hope. He slipped his visor down and hefted his gun up, clicking in 4 bullets, just in case it was the obviously inexperienced killer, or a dangerous mutt or dog. Kingston began the descent down the stairs, toward the general area of the footsteps. Kingston wanted to try to get whoever the footsteps were, if they were a person at all, to respond, so he began talking, ripping on the killer.
"Whoever did this, was obviously an inexperienced killer, eh? I mean come on, he practically left us the weapon with the way he killed Mayor Jenny. It was quite obviously an axe." He said with a cocky laugh. Come on... Say something... Kingston said in his mind. Whoever it was, whether they responded or not, could decide whether he shot or not...

I stood their, panting, as the Peacekeeper tried to calm me down. But I couldn't calm down. I just couldn't. Poor Mayor Jenny. She was just so nice to me. I was the child she never had. She was the mother I never had. It's like we were always meant to be friends. Of course, she was older than me, but way too young to die. Why would someone ever do this too her? Suddenly, footsteps are heard downstairs. My heart is racing fast than it ever has. The Peacekeeper slowly makes his way down the stairs, but not before telling me to stay here. I have never been this afraid in my life.

I decide that I can help while the Peacekeeper is downstairs. If I investigate the crime scene, maybe I could find something useful. I enter her bedroom, careful not to look at what used to be Mayor Jenny, and casually looked around the room. One thing I notice out of the ordinary is that the bed isn't made. Mayor Jenny is one of the neatest people I know, and always makes her bed the second she wakes up. Maybe she was thrown to the bed, helpless, as her attacker lifted the axe and....I force my mind not to picture the rest. I've had enough of this room. Exiting, I realize there is still something I can do to help: Find the source of the footsteps.

As careful and quiet as the Peacekeeper had been, I tiptoe down the staircase, staying on the edges to avoid any creaks. I decide to go the opposite way the Peacekeeper went. That way, if he or she attempts to run, we will have them cornered. I here him taunt the intruder as I enter the living room. There, I see her. A beautiful blonde is standing there, obviously the source of the footsteps. For a second, I am caught up in her beauty that I forget one important detail. She could be the killer. Cautiously, I take a few steps back, not paying attention to where I'm going. The sound the vase made as it shattered into a million pieces was probably heard in the Capitol.
