Elorette
I take a harpoon from the pile slowly, my mind things other than fishing. Without really seeing her, I pass my partner the harpoon. It's her turn to catch something; I did it last.

"Oi! Get over here," shouts one of the people on the boat. "We need help here!" Coming out of my reverie I hurry forward to help them pull the net out of the water. At the other end of the boat, the rest of our small crew were latching the catch onto our boat.

Panting from the effort, I rise from securing the net and look at my partner, Scarlet. "What did you catch that's so big we can't put it on the boat?" I ask in a puzzled voice, rubbing my palms against my thighs.

"I caught a whale," I respond casually. "It took several people to kill it, though." Skeptically, I glance at Elorette. She is about the only person I view as an equal. Just as pretty as me, just as strong and quick witted, and really, just as proud. But at the same time, Elorette had some quality that I didn't have, which made me frustrated.

At the thought of this, I grow irritated and I start collecting the scattered harpoons and cleaning the ones that are dirty from the whale-killing. I glance over my shoulder to see if Elorette is following suit. She should, its only polite.

"A whale?" I say in surprise. I want to say good job, but I don't want to admit she did a better job then me on my last catch. Instead, I say, "We haven't caught one of those in a while." Scarlet glances at me and the look she gives me is one that makes me think I am an itch that she longs to scratch, but can't. I ignore her, planning to go back into my reverie, but I notice she is cleaning up and it wold be rude to just watch her work. But I don't want to work; I just want to sit and think and not work.

Sighing resignedly, I help her gather and clean the harpoons, thinking how much my life stinks. I would welcome going into the hunger games for a little excitement, but I wouldn't come out alive, so whats the point? I glance at Scarlet suddenly curious. "Would you want to be in the hunger games?" I ask her ignoring any privacy issues that might be in the way. What privacy did any of us have?

I laugh a short laugh with no humor. "The hunger games? I guess I'd love to go in now... A while ago I would have recoiled in disgust, but now that I have no soul to tear by killing, it wouldn't be so bad to win," I say harshly. I check myself for a second. Is this true? Would I risk it? And if I didn't win? Having finished cleaning and collecting the harpoons I stand up and grip the rail of the boat watching Elorette curiously. She looked kind of moody right now, how I felt now on a normal basis. Designing had lost all the fun, gym didn't satisfy my anger, and singing seemed to tame. With chagrin, I remember the days when I actually liked life.

"And if you didn't win?" I ask darkly glancing discreetly at the girl next to me. She made me think of something twisted and blackened and it felt wrong to be around her. But what if I didn't win if I had entered? Well, I'd considered that already, and besides, I decided I didn't want to enter the hunger games, so I'm settled.

"I guess I don't care if I didn't win," I answer nonchalantly. "Besides, there's no need to think about it. I'm going to win anyway," I add confidently, though there was shadow of doubt. But right now it's true: I don't care if I die in there. Either I die there, well known and remembered or I die here unknown, and with a wasted life.

I stand up and rub my hands together, noting that they're still sweaty from hauling the whale in. "We need to fish some more before we get back to the district, otherwise we won't have enough for the peacekeepers," I say as I glance down the ship to where the whale was attacked. The peacekeepers counted whales as one fish (even though they're huge) and we need ten fish by the time we get back. So far we have two fish and a whale, so we need to get seven fish more. Wearily, I pick up my fishing rod and add some bait.

So she doesn't care about dying, huh? I guess that's the way it should be, but to tell the truth, I'm scared out of my wits about death. But I just nod my head in understanding and semi-agreement without any verbal response.

But Scarlet reminded me of how we still had a lot to do before five o'clock. Picking up my own rod, I realized I was out of bait. "Hey, Scarlet, can I borrow some bait...please?" I added the please on last minute afraid she might have a temper or something. I never ever caught anything with my own bait, for some reason so I had stopped buying as much and starting borrowing other people's, until they started telling me to pay for it.
