Love must be in the Water (Annie)

Annie was wandering the streets of District 12. It was something that she did everyday, never really having an excuse or place to go. She walked through the square and into another small alley, on her way to the only grass that covered the floor of District 12. It was a small meadow, just outside the fence that imprisoned everyone in the grey, coal mining district.

She wasn't really looking at anything, she was simply walking. She thought perhaps she may stop and sit down on the grass, just watching the world go by. It was something she had come to do very often recently, she had nothing else to pass the day.

She heard someone singing, a sweet and beautiful voice that recited well known lyrics. She looked and saw a boy sitting in the meadow, with a pad and pen, singing to himself. He was completely alone, like her. He looked almost the same age as her, give or take a year. She wondered why he was not off playing with the other boys in District 12.

Annie sat near him, hesitant on whether she should talk to him. Annie had always been a bit of a coward when it came to new people. She listened to him as he finished singing, closing her eyes and smiling. The tune had always been so sad to her, it was a lullabye that many sung at funerals. It was like the boy was singing it for someone he had lost. When he finished, Annie smiled kindly at him.

"You have a lovely singing voice." She said quietly, her shyness shining through.
