Halloran sat down with a groan. The leather seat was all too comfortable, but it was the continuous hard work that had worn him out, and the coffee break had done little to raise his spirits. He stared blandly at the blue hologram of the arena and the different colored dots that moved around from place to place, some in groups, some alone. It was an honor to be employed to work on the Games, but this was Halloran's fourth games, and working in the Muttation Division was taxing. He would prefer to be in charge of climate - something a lot less... complex... Yet he was stuck with this role, left in charge of which Mutts to deploy, where and when.
Most of the time he had little say in any of that. The Head Gamemaker would control the pace of the Games, and demanded Mutts on occasion, without consulting the Mutt team. When the boss wasn't overthrowing his decisions, his team were. He was just one of four people tasked with Mutt handling, deployment and design, and as it happened he was bottom of that particular pecking order.
Hal had handled Mutts before. He was qualified to work down in the laboratories to edit and recreate the Muttations that helped crush the rebellion all those years ago. District Three's up-and-coming scientist. That was him ten years ago. Now where was he? You could call it a dream job, but it had its limitations.
Day Three. Not a lot had happened on the Muttation front. A hoard of Combustiphants were unleashed on the tributes the day before, but they were more cumbersome than explosive, and were considered a bit of a flop. Hal didn't mind, he didn't design nor suggest them - It was one of his team that took the fall for their ineffective implementation. Timing. It's all about timing. Hal suggested the Spitting Raptors used on the group of girls that day, and that had proved entertaining for the meantime - It kept the Head Gamemaker happy, at least. Yet Hal needed something today if he was going to try and climb the ladder of authority.
He leaned forwards to get a closer look at the hologram. There was a seven-tribute brawl going on, three versus four, over by the Banyan Tree. That was getting a lot of coverage, and the landscapers were getting credit for the amazing scenery. Hal bit his tongue, searching for other dots on the map.
"Throw some Raptors in with them, Hal!" A co-worker jested, motioning to the massive fray. The man scoffed.
"They look like they're killing each other just fine..." He grumbled, looking closer at the map.
"Although..." His finger trailed to a lone, blinking dot. A smile crept onto the face of the Muttations expert, his eyes reflecting the pale blue of the hologram.
"You're not doing much!" He grinned at the blip labelled Jaime Lyon. Truth be told, the boy from Two had taken on a Combustiphant the day before and was stranded somewhat. No one had taken much interest in him today, he was recovering from the scrap and had spent most of the day resting. Why should he get to rest whilst others are so frantically? Hal chuckled to himself, which made others around him smile. They knew he was about to deploy.
Of all the Muttations that Halloran and his team had selected for these Games, the Dart Jaguar was one of his favorites. Sleek, quick, agile, poisonous. Sure, the pretty boy Jaime Lyon could take on a slow and heavy elephant, but how would he fair against something that struck so fast? The Capitol audience would love to see the long-haired heart-throb dance for his life. He could see the ratings now, and it would be him who caused the spark. All the credit he would get - All the bonuses. In the end, it was a no brainer.
The Dart Jaguar fizzled from the leaves and grew in size, legs appearing from the shadows and eyes flickering into life. It was no robot, but it wasn't quite alive. It had been created and summoned. It had no purpose other than to kill, and so it set off to do what it was programmed to do. The code in its head told it that it only had one target - D2M. The Jaguar locked on to the tracking device inside the tribute and bounded off in its direction. It was like instinct - Indescribable, and yet it needed no explanation. The creature dripped venom as it closed in on the injured tribute, getting closer and closer until it was right on top of him.
