Looking out from underneath,
Fractured moonlight on the sea
Reflections still look the same to me,
As before I went under.
And it's peaceful in the deep,

The justice building was eerily familiar. Everything looked exactly the same as it had when I had stepped into this room when Emerald had been reaped. There was only one small difference. I was the one going to the Capitol and this time I was not hiding in a corner, fearing that the building was going to collapse down on me. This time I sat on one of those plush chairs, hands gripping the soft material as I breathed rapidly. That horrible feeling of the walls slowly closing in on me growing with each passing second. My heart speeds up and I feel more worried and unnerved and fearful then I had felt when my name had been called. But then small places always made me feel this way, like I was suffocating, like they were rapidly closing in on me until they swallowed me and choked me and took me whole. Until it killed me and I’d stop breathing and I’d lay their gasping for air that would not come. It was why I liked the outdoors; it was one of the reasons why when I trained I did it outside. Being locked up and in a building was not something I wanted to have to face ever. It was a scary prospect, it truly was.

A part of me wondered if I would even see any of my family, would one of them drag themselves away from the district square to even say goodbye. I hardly expected, I was far too weird for their standards and I was more than positive that some of them did not even approve of my behaviour. Hell I looked like a mess, two dirt streaks across my hair, just adding to the wild, untameable look. Leaves and sticks had woven themselves into the careless mass of wavy brown hair on my head. My brown eyes were just as will, right now wide and filled with worry, for the walls were slowly coming in closer and closer. I had made no effort to look decent for the reaping, my gardening clothes still hanging around my lean body. Dirt and brown seemed to cover every inch of them, including my arms and legs. And as always I sat there feet bare, brushing gently on the soft ground of the justice building.

Emerald had done this. She had sat here, she had said goodbye and she had left. She had died. Would it be different for me? Was I kidding myself to think that I could possibly get out of this alive? I swallow, my hands tightening on the chair. I could do this, I had the training and I had the skills that I needed to survive. I could survive this, I would. I’d prove them all wrong.

I’ll be the best. I can be better than any of them.
