feeling my way through the darkness
guided by a beating heart
I can’t tell where the journey will end
but I know where to start

Sitting down on these hard, intricately designed chairs wasn’t going to do me any good. Neither was pacing, but it was preferable to the former. The room was well, roomy enough, to fit a good fifteen paces, and with each step the thought train switched paths in my mind. How am I going to be able to leave him? How will he hold up? How will he manage himself?

As I made my way to the colossal wooden doors and pressed my ear against them, I heard almost nothing. No comfort of words exchanged between anyone to be heard. Well that was helpful. The huff of air that escaped my mouth dissipated into the chilly air filling the room, helping me to understand that I was, in fact, freezing. I guess the stress of everything had numbed my sense of well—everything. There were no means of warming myself up, so I continued my pointless pacing.

Time was crawling, and the hands on the small clock on the wall seemed to be frozen in place. Everything in the room was unappealing, from the patterned chairs enclosing the oak coffee table to the window that only made me want to leave. If only this was just a dream—actually it’d be a nightmare, but that would be better than this reality.

“Cassie Radke.” The words echoed through my mind rapidly and played continuously. I remembered the momentary fear in her eyes as the same fear flashed through his mind. Although in his mind, it wasn’t momentary. It was repetitive, like an old horror movie stuck on a loop. The terror of watching her walk up on the stage, and the pain that stabbed like a knife in the back as she looked at me and nodded. She was glad I was safe, but that’s beside the point. I can’t protect her anymore.

I had pushed my way back through the crowd, trying desperately to make my way to Cassie. Pushing forward hadn’t worked, so I turned around and made my way backwards, through the seemingly endless sea of people, all relieved at the fact their world would stay intact for another year, even though mine was falling apart.

I had finally made my way to the justice building, and the way-too-nice people at the front of the room told me where my sister was located. Wasn’t too far, sixth door on the left, but the hallway seemed endless. My breathing was heavy, and my feet seemed to move slowly even as I urged them to go faster and faster, pushing towards that impossible goal of the sixth door on the left.

The sound of heavy footsteps in the corridor outside my door surprised me. I put my ear to the door to maybe find some indicator of the mysterious marathon runner making their way towards me, but the only thing to find was the pain of the door being slammed into my face as it was opened forcefully. The first thing I could make out of the person was his eyes, and it clicked quickly. I threw myself around him, and the hug that was returned was warm and comforting, the first thing to be so today actually.

“Cassie, it’s going to be alright, we’ll figure this out we’ll get you out,” Cole stammered quickly, his words blurring together as his mouth desperately tried to keep up with his mind, “we’ll find a way to keep you safe, and it’s all going to be okay.”

“Cole, there’s nothing you can do. There’s no one that will take this burden off me and honestly, no one should,” Her head shook gently, as she moved the pieces of bright red hair that had fallen over her face, “I have to take care of myself, even if I really can’t.”

Cole’s eyes snapped from pure sadness to pure anger, “Cassie I’m supposed to protect you, how am I supposed to feel when you’re—“

“When I’m gone? You know I’m not coming back right?” Her tone was gentle and soft, like a mother breaking bad news to her ignorant child. Her smile was sympathetic as she pulled him into another hug and whispered in his ear, “You have to take care of yourself. You have to promise to not worry about me.”

“Cassie I can’t. You’re my sister. It’s my job to worry about you, to protect you, and I can’t do that anymore! How is that supposed to make me feel?” His voice was cracking now, tripping over every word as if it was a massive wall in the mental obstacle course of his mind.

“It’s not your job anymore, I’ll be fine.” Cassie knew she was lying through her teeth, and she knew the only time her brother would ever see her again would be when he saw her lifeless body, but it was better not to talk about that right now. “Now, we don’t have much time left, so let me tell you this: you’re going to be okay, you’ll make it without me, and you don’t really need me. But I need you, I need you to be strong and carry both of us okay?” His nod reassured her, and he pulled something out of his pocket, a small flower, made of twine, and slipped it into her hand.

“Keep this okay? And anytime you start to get scared, realize you have it, and realize I’m here to carry you.” He then pulled her into another hug, and held her there longer than he meant to, feeling the texture of her red hair that he had pulled so many times as kids, and one single tear escaped. They pulled away, and all he could do was nod as he walked out.

You know how the corridor felt long at the beginning, well now it felt even longer. As Cole broke out into the fresh air and sunshine, he thought it would help. But it didn’t, and as he sat down against the plain brick wall of the justice building, every single thought that ran through his mind was negative. I’ll carry you Cassie, I promise.

I tried carrying the weight of the world
but I only have two hands
hope I get the chance to travel the world
but I don’t have any plans
