Your eyes gazed up at the sky, counting the stars that glittered up above your head like little lights. The cold ground didn't bother you at all, your coat keeping you warm as you lay in the snow, and you put your hands behind your head. What were you doing out here? You'd noticed how clear it was out tonight and couldn't resist the chance to stargaze. You'd need to sleep soon but right now, you were content.

As you lay there, you wondered if someone would join you. You would like some company but you doubted it. Who would be out so late at night, just to stargaze with you, it wasn't like you were the family favorite. You heard footsteps but didn't pay attention to them. You just kept watching the sky.

The music is loud. It numbs my mind. The lights are almost blinding, multicolored swirls enveloping me in a perfect distraction. A man, no a boy, wraps his hands around my waist. I try not to cringe as the potent cologne chokes me. His lips touch my neck, rough and chapped. The stubble grazes my jaw, leaving small white lines. I want to pull away. I want to leave the loud music. The blinding lights. I want to escape this mass of confusion. Maybe sit outside. Look at the moon and cry.

"You look beautiful tonight."

His voice is deep in my ear. I feel a churning in my stomach. Not that of butterflies, but of disgust. I can't handle it anymore, I pull away. I need to get home. Luckily, I hadn't hit the booze before I'd left the party. I grab a shot before I leave, heading back to the Bison hut.

As you lie there, you here footsteps approaching you and you sit up, not taking your eyes off the stars and wonder who would be out at this time of night. When you finally see who it is, your hazel eys widen as you recognize your cousin, Velvet. What was she doing out at this time? You smiled. Maybe she'll count stars with me for a fifteen year old, you were one heck of an optimist, something your brother had made sure of. You squinted in the dark, hoping Velvet would see you. "Velvet, is that you?" you called, your childlike voice ringing out in the dark air. You sometimes coulsn't stand your voice but you supposed that for now, it would have to do. You smiled a large smile, waving your cousin over

My feet traverse the forested floor. Dead leaves fall under my feet, sending small rustles across across the ground where I stepped. My senses are dulled, my eyes heavy. The shots that had slid down my throat so easily now churned in my stomach, attempting to claw their way to freedom once more. The smell of the forest is overwhelming. So calm, so content, so beautiful. If this buzz did not blur my vision, did not put it's greedy hands over my eyes leaving me only the small spaces in between to see my way home, perhaps I would've been awestruck. The gorgeous night sky, so many shades darker than than the day's. But, softer as well. More welcoming as the soft gleam of the stars, like the diamonds I had only ever seen on television, shine above me. Like a million tiny suns guiding me home. Maybe I would have loved the night sky, so much more than I loved the tang of the alcohol that drugged me nightly. If things had been different.

I must be close to my home, this path was so familiar to me now. I could walk it blindfolded, which is basically what I had done for the last 20 minutes. My fingers slide against the rough bark keeping me upright as my mind wanders far away from my human form. And then a girl, my cousin perhaps, as I recognize her voice. Only a year junior to me, yet so much younger in so many ways. "Velvet, is that you?"

Get yourself together Velvet. Show her you're okay. Show her you're strong. I attempt to keep my words from slurring as my hip finds a nearby tree, resting against it's cracking bark for support. "Yes, darling."
