The past few minutes are nothing but a haze. One minute I'm on stage, announcing my name to the world; Ari Newton. The next I find myself shaking hands with Moss and being taken back to the justice building, I can't say that I've ever been in here and even I admit it's one hundred times better than anywhere I've been. I look around the place, my eyes scanning the enormous room I've been left in. I know sooner or later my family will come in here. Will they understand or will they curse? Does anyone understand? I slowly walk over to the seat and allow myself to fall on it, allow myself to be taken by it's temptations because I really need to sit down. The sunlight seeps into the room through the window next to me and I quickly raise a hand to block it from my eyes, I move over slightly, out of the sunlight.

And finally there is peace.

I sit there for an agonising five minutes, I volunteered, I asked for this. I have to do this because I asked for it, no turning back. Do or die Ari. I didn't even know the kid I volunteered for, I had never even heard that name until the escort spoke it out less than an hour ago. I had to volunteer, I had to do it, at least now I have the chance, no not I. This is about more than me, at least now my family has the chance, provided I get home. There's a chance, a slim chance, but it's better than no chance. I may have a fool's chance but I have someone fighting for that chance, and that fool is me.

"You got three minutes. I hear and I quickly stand up, but who I see is not who I was expecting.

I needed to see him, to see the boy who saved the life of my brother. Taking a deep breath I move away from my family, from my brother. I didn’t care about my mum or dad, I only really cared for him- we had to stick together. Taking a peak over my shoulder I watch as my mother collapses into his arms, my Dad kneeling down next to them. I hold back a snort before entering the building that housed the boy who was one I have never met before- but will be forever grateful of. After all he had just saved the life of someone I cared for- I knew he wouldn’t have survived, he would have died, died a death that would have made me wish that I was no longer living on this earth.

I walk into the room to a surprised face, which I expect as this boy has no idea who I am or why I was here. I give him a small smile, “Hi, do you mind if we take a seat?” I ask politely, which surprised me as I was anything but polite. I gesture towards the chair before sitting down, my hands folding into my lap, surrounded by the green material of my dress. “Hi, My name is Aubrey Mentiras. The sister of the boy who you volunteered for today,” my voice is as quiet as a whisper, my eyes finding the floor as the words slipped past my lips. I didn’t want the by to see the tears that welled in the pits of my eyes, or the way my hands shook in my lap.

I had really not expected the boy's family to come to see me, out of all the people who I'd be saying goodbye to I they were the last people on my mind, because when I did this I had been thinking more 'save my family from starving' than 'save this kid from dying horribly'. So I guess I've saved a life as well, that's good right? I slowly sink back into the seat I had been originally sitting in before, my hands on my lap as well. She puts her head down, as if she's trying to hide something from me. She must want to thank me, same as the other kid, he should be thanking me to the end of his days.

I take a deep gulp and look at her. "Well, erm, you're both very welcome I guess," I say, my voice almost trailing off. "but it was really nothing," But it really wasn't, it was everything. It's just my modesty getting the better of me, I'm basically throwing away my life, but I don't know what to say, it's not exactly 'nothing'. I have nothing to hide, I've just never really been good with these kinds of confrontations.

"erm, you both are very welcome, I guess... it was nothing really." At that my eyes are straight on his. It was nothing? what did he mean, nothing? My eye brows knit into a frown as I look at the boy in front of me who could not be much older than myself- even the same age. Then I think of myself in his position and I could think of nothing less than saying that it was nothing. I knew about death, I knew so much, and I knew that I was not ready for it. How could this boy say it was nothing? To put himself forward, to take a place in place of another person where he would most likely die? No offense to this boy or anything, but I didn't think he would survive. He was not strong like the rest of them, like the careers who have trained all there life to be part of the games. He was small, he was young, so very young.

"How- how could it be nothing?" I ask before I can stop myself. "how can going into the arena where you may die, where you will see horrible things be 'nothing'?" I knew I should stop. I shouldnt be saying these things, reminding the boy of the things that he would face- but I couldnt stop myself. "Are you ready to die? To see things that will haunt you for the rest of your life- weather it be no loner than a few weeks or many years to come?"
