Mark Antony

Marks feet dragged along his feet along through the dense forest as the sun beamed down onto his face. He had gotten an early start on the day, to make good time back to two. He knowing he was close motivated him to keep moving at a fast steady pace, though still being careful where he set his foot, knowing that a single sound in these woods could alert anyone nearby.

Before Mark had left his camp site the morning before he had taken out his sharpened dagger and used it to shave his face, giving it a smooth touch to it, though revealing a deep scar running across his left eyebrow. On his back sat a large hikers back pack, and slung over his shoulder was a duffle bag filled with his clothing, and the gun he had acquired from the rebels. He was quite handy with one now after all the training, but he knew he would not need it he tossed it out before he set off this morning. Also hanging from his back was a long bow, and a quiver that sat to the side of the backpack. Mark was traveling in a blue long sleeved shirt with a dark green sweat shirt over it. Blue jeans hung loosely around his hips, the only thing holding them up was a belt that held two swords sheathed, along with a place to put a long hunters dagger.

With every step forward, Mark hopped to run into a stream to bath himself. It had been a few days before he had the chance to bath and he was beginning to long for a cold bath. Of course warm would have suited better, but he knew there was no way of that happening any time soon. Finally Mark pushed his was out into a clearing that had a nice swimming hole. With a loud sigh Mark smiled as his backpack dropped to the ground along with the duffle bag. He dropped the bow carelessly to the side along with the quiver, a few arrows spilling out. Then he dropped the belt and took his shirt off, leaving himself bare for a moment as he reached into the duffle bag and pulled out a pair of shorts, slipping them on then jumping into the water. As the cold water pressed against his skin he resurfaced shaking his head, water flying from his head as he does. He looked around for a moment, then dove himself under the water again, swimming towards the bottom of the swimming hole.

This day is like any other. I wake up with the same nightmare that I have since last weekend. The fingers of my most hated enemy wrapping around my neck as he stares down into my eyes. His eyes so full of malice and evil deeds. He never says a word, but his eyes scream at me. It's even as bad as I can even see my own face in his eyes like a reflection as I open my mouth to scream and then I wake up. Each and every day I wake up with those dreams and yet nothing ever alerts my father anymore. Even when I get up out of the bed and search the house, he's already gone and without a single word or a note. I'm not sure which I dislike more? Him not talking to me, or his old ways of making sure I do what he says. Why can't I have a happy medium in my life?

Honestly, this is getting too much. I can't handle all of this. Just need to disappear for an hour... that's all. I'm sure he wouldn't even care if I never came back home. MAybe I should...

Dressing quickly, I leave the house and don't look back. I even went so far as to get a small backpack and pack a few provisions in case I decide to stay out a little longer. There's nothing for me to do today and the only thing that could go wrong will be meeting up... SHUT UP... DON'T YOU DARE MENTION HIS NAME.

I take off running at the thought of my enemy. I actually went without the sling for my arm today, in order to get the mobility back with the brace only. Though, I stil hold it close so the movements dont jarr my arm too much. Soon enough, I reach the dusty river, so I stop and walk the rest of the way. Somewhere in the distance, I hear the water splashing but hold back. My fears already starting to resurface. How does he know where I'm going? I question myself and get closer to get a peek as the figure dives under the water. That's when i see the weapons laying on the ground.

I don't know what's gotten into me, but I grab the smallest weapon there is and hold it near my body. If it's Jins here swimming, I will definately need something to protect myself. I'm frozen in my step and I keep the dagger near my body.

Mark hits the bottom of the lake, and lets out a little air, to help him stay under as he sits on the bottom, using his hands, and pushing up to keep his bottom against the floor. He in under for a few more moments before pushing off the ground reaching for the surface, but pausing for a moment, seeing a figure off in the distance a bit standing still. Mark feared the worst, that it may be a peacekeeper. He lacked breath, but refused to surface for a few more moments, before finally bringing himself above the water, his eyes closes as he wipes away the water, placing a hand on the side of the swimming hole, now being able to stand in the water.

"Who's that?" he says as he removes his hands and opens his eyes, seeing a familiar face. He was not sure whom it was, for a moment he stared, thinking who this could be, then it finally hits him. A surprised expression hits his face when he realizes its Kyanite. For a moment he is silent, eyeing the small knife in her hand. Mark opens his mouth to speak but cannot force any words out.

The water's surface is almost still for too many moments at a time. The dagger in my hands, pressed tightly against my chest, moves with each of my breaths. Up and down. My body even shakes just slightly. Each breath, I'm silently whispering pleas that it isn't going to be Jins. My nightmare might, in fact, come true if it is him. I don't think I'll be able to really escape his grasp this time. My nightmare might become reality here and now. And my wish to never return home, will now happen and my father won't even care.

Then some movement on the water's surface occurs before the figure stands. My eyes won't let me see anyone else before I suddenly yell out to him. "STAY BACK!" I shout and I hold the dagger outward to the figure. His mouth drops but he just stands there stunned.

Why isn't he coming after me? Jins isn't afraid to hurt me. He's done it just last week. What is he waiting on? Then my eyes begin to clear up. My vision seems to be changing and with it, my view of the man in the water who looks dumbstruck with me pointing the knife at him. It's a ghost. That's who it is.

"M...Mark?" I studder. The knife dropps suddenly to my side, but I don't dare let it go. "Is that you?" I feel an overwheming sense of releif to know that it's just Mark, but I had thought he was dead? It's been so long since anyone has ever seen him and his house... burnt? "What happened to you?"

A few more moments pass, and Mark finally speaks." Um, well I hope I'm Mark." He says, his usual smile not plastered across his face, just the look of indifference. Finally he pulls himself out of the water, reaching into the duffle bag, pulling out a towel and drying his hair. He was stalling, trying to think of what to say, or do. The last time he saw her, she was telling him he wished he was dead. She probably got the satisfaction of that wish too, probably thinking he had died in the fire along with his whole family. After his hair is dried he tosses the towel onto the ground and sits on it.

For a moment he wonders if he is going to tell her about the whole time he was gone. Instead he shortens it." I was in district thirteenth." he says with a huff, a scar across his chest seems fairly new, a few weeks old at the most. Mark then spots the knife and eyes it for a moment." Um... Kyanite, i'm not going to hurt you." The knife makes his a bit nervous, so he presses her about it." Would you please put that away." Since Mark had left two for thirteen, most dangers had made him nervous. Before his cocky attitude always got the best of him and he feared nothing. Though when Acheva died, he started to take danger a bit more seriously.

Mark reached slowly for his bag." I'm just grabbing something to eat." He says, obviously being cautious about what he says and dose. After a moment, he pulls out a bloodied cloth and set it on the blanket next to him. He unwrapped it and a small piece of venison sat in front of him. Mark tried to be a bit more talkative, though he was a little to stunned to speak, and months of lonesomeness make him more accustomed to just doing things more often than talking. Though a moment later he pushed a smile onto his face and looked up at the girl he once crushed on." Its actually really nice to see you." He blinks a little, as he tries to muster up a few more words, but cannot, so he offers for her to across from him with a motion of his hand. Then he grabbed a few fallen branches that were next to him, starting to build a small fire pit, quite hungry, realizing he had forgotten to eat this morning.

As he begins with the fire pit he realizes he may be acting a bit awkward at them moment so he pauses what he is doing." Forgive me if I am being a bit awkward... Its been months since I have had the acquaintance of anyone else. My manners may have faltered just a tad." he says with a small smile.

The entire time I stand there with his knife in my hand, he acts as though nothing at all is going on. Nothing is bothering him at all. He clearly walks out of the water, towel drying his hair and sitting on it a moment later. I'm just in awe. From the last time I met him, I wished for his death because of Matthew. He desired for me to be all his, without ever telling anyone and got mad at me when I did. Not more than a few days later, he disappeared... in a house fire. My wish had come true and Matthew didn't have to worry about him at all. Then we broke up and I had set in remorse for what I'd done to him but what good did that do? He was dead.

Now? He's alive and well.

He's not a ghost. Not even a figment of my imagination. He's in the flesh.

My question reaches his ears finally as he lets his voice come out to me; to reach out to me and for some reason, I know I should just stay away from him even now, but I'm just amazed he's still alive after all this time. It shouldn't change anything though, should it? Matthew will still refuse for me to be around him, right?

"Um... Kyanite, I'm not goign to hurt you. Would you please put that away?" I realize what he's saying and I know he won't hurt me, so I walk closer to him, to where I got the knife and lay it down where I found it. I step back away from him though still weary. He acts so odd for some reason. And he begins to make a small campfire with something that looks bloodied. I hold my breath a moment until I realize he's just going to cook something and he offers for me to sit. I'd still rather not join him for his company, but I am curious, so I linger around one of the trees watching him and listening to his voice.

"Why didn't you come back sooner? Everyonen thought you were dead. I thought you were dead. That I had somehow killed you by what I said to you last. I'm sorry." I look behind me though for any sign of others around. Surely there wouldn't be, but I'm jumpy as of late.

Mark reached into his bag and pulled out a few spices he harvested along the way, listening as she spoke. Finally throwing some dried leafs on the fire pit, along with some tissue out of his bag he took a lighter out of his bag, and began to light the tissue. For a moment, he sets down the lighter and begins to blow on the slow burning tissue. Looking closely at the lighter, upon it sat a carving, that showed an eagle with its wings spread with a small saying carved under it."All live free." Under the saying was two letters M.A. carved into it.

After a quick moment, Marks hand took hold of it again, and shook it and let out a sigh as the shell of the plastic tool remained hollow. Though it was useless to him he still put it back in his bag. When Kyanite finishes speaking Mark looks up from his things. He smiles a small, yet good willed smile to fill his pause. For a moment he just looks up at her, meeting her eyes once, then quickly averting his gaze back to the food that lay in front of him.

Marks voice finally broke the silence," I told you Kya, I was going to district thirteen, and when my mother burned the house down, it was a perfect opportunity for me and Flavia to leave. Don't get me wrong in the slightest, I miss my family, I still cry sometimes over them. I cant even get up in the morning without hating myself for being so blind to see what my mother was about to do." Mark pauses, and he softens his voice to try to keep his composure." But what was done was done, and I needed to make sure Flavia had a good life, a safe one, away from the fear of the reaping." Mark begins unwrapping the mean, and taking his hunting knife and cutting slices of it, to try and occupy his emotions as he spoke. "I realized that fighting is not the only thing I must do to protect my family. To truly protect them I had to give up my wants and needs, so despite what me and Flavia may have wanted, I made one of my friends in thirteen would keep her safe."

When the young man spoke of Flavia, he seemed to soften and almost break down. The career that was once here was long gone, or at least his attitude. Finally Mark took a few of the spices and herbs in his hand and crushed them, spreading them over the slices of meat, then taking out a metal make shift square pan, that seemed to be made out a piece of bent metal. Mark balanced it over the fire and dropped the slabs of mean onto it. "Oh, and apology accepted Kya, you had every right to wish I was gone. There are a lot of things I did and said that was wrong." Mark looks at the floor and finally back up." I should be the one saying sorry. So, here it is: Kyanite, everything I have ever said, done... everything that I made difficult in your life. I just want to say I am sorry, that I should never have done something like that to you. I hope that some how we can work this out and be something other than enemies. I have a lot, and I wont consider you one. Considering what I have done to you, I have made myself the enemy."

Mark smiles slightly looking at the girl again, then with a small nod, he looks back to the fire, tending to it.
