Chantilly yawned as she exited the school building, looking up into the already dimming sky. It was a pretty sight; a brilliant orange sky, streaked with pink and blue. The factories' smog muddled the colors a little bit, though Chantilly overlooked it as she walked along the streets, making her way home, and afterwards, to the factory.
Her mother hated it, saying that she was too young to be taking a shift there after school. But while she objected it, there were too many pros to pass it up: it created another source of income, for one, and every penny counted in the Greene household. Plus, her father pushed for it, saying that it taught her 'work values' and such. So Mom kept her mouth shut, though she talked of taking tesserae once she was old enough. For now, though, she accompanied Bengaline to the factory every day after school.
Her eyes were trained on the sky as she walked. Chantilly knew the route home by heart, and she knew that she was safe in the pack of other schoolchildren. So she walked, as her peers surrounded her and chatted loudly. Chantilly was good at tuning them out.
