We can help {each other} // Kire [drought plot]

I'll be blunt, this place does not appeal to me at all.

I only went because Otis was going; I just can't stay in that house alone, please no. I would never feel safe, I would never be able to sleep at night or even take a walk with the knowledge that she is thousands of miles away in a district plagued by draught and not with me. I guess this was slightly selfish of me on my part, honestly I've never been much of a helper, mostly a taker but Otis was definitely a giver- if she was going away to give then so was I. It's almost like a brotherly duty why I came, but also for my own sake. That's the best way I can describe the reason why I came.

Until today I used to hate the rain, now I am completely and utterly grateful for it.

The moment I set my eyes on the ruined, dry plains of District eleven I knew I had a lot of work set out for me. I saw their starving faces shoot me a flash of relief when they saw that me and those from other districts had come to save them. Like some sort of angels sent to save them. I will admit, within that groan when I saw all the work we'd have to do it was mixed with a feeling of sympathy. I still feel sorry for these people. I never thought I'd see the day when I am feeling sorry for someone else.

And now here I am. The ground is drier than a parched desert and I can tell just by looking, a stupidly numerous amount of jagged cracks riddle the ground (how can anyone expect to grow anything here?) I finally understand why these people have gone hungry and thirsty. I can't exactly say I'm the smartest fish in the sea but if they're not growing crops then they don't get money, and if they don't get money then they can't hope to get any food or water. It all makes sense now! I guess that's why District seven will be helping replant their plants that shrivelled up and died from the intense heat.

The sun is unbearable, the heat constantly beats down against my back and the back of my head, forcing sweat to flow and turn my short sleeved shirt damp. Yep, it's going to be a really long day. My blue eyes scan my surroundings, people from the other Districts have surrounded me, the same thoughts are probably running through our minds. Oh ripred the heat, we need to help these people, it's horrible here. At least in District seven it was never this hot, and I am not exaggerating when I say I have never felt this kind of heat of dryness, this lack of hydration, this feeling that all the water in my body of being slowly drained out of me bit by bit. How do these people live with it?

We were set to work quickly, since I was from seven I had to replant the dried out and dead plants. It's taken this long for Capitol to actually do something, no doubt in all this time the people of District eleven have been dying; dying like plants. We all know that if this wasn't affecting the Capitol they wouldn't bother sending us out here, but no water means no food in eleven, no food in eleven means no food for the Capitol.

It doesn't take me too long to completely get the hang of it, dig, insert seed, cover, water. I've been doing this same boring routine for not too long, no doubt my hands and back will be aching by the end of this tough work. But still, I can't complain it's so much better than being alone in that shack I guess. When I slowly turn my head I notice there's another guy, definitely older than me, struggling with the plants, he's not too far away. Maybe, just maybe I can shuffle along to him and help him - being beaten by Peacekeepers for not doing enough work is not exactly ideal.

Might as well, I'm not doing anything wrong. And so I do, I slowly but surely shuffle towards him so I'm next to him. "Hey, I can see you struggling d'you need a hand with that?"
