I know I keep my heart protected, far away from my sleeve.

"I shouldn't have made such a big deal about everythin'. I should have waited. He's going to be there. Right? Right?"

Mace paused, having worn a strip of carpet with his pacing. The conference room had been sparsely decorated, with a few white garlands and several flowing bouquets across the table. It still felt like a conference room. The Hall only had one bridal suite, and obviously that had been reserved for Julian and the ladies. Mace had been relegated to the opposite end of the Hall, a place of sterile tables and swiveling chairs. Technically Arbor should have been there too, keeping him company, but Mace hadn't seem him. He hoped for the best, but the truth was, he spared very few thoughts for the District Twelve victor. He was preoccupied with the vision of stepping into the atrium and finding himself alone.

Mason suckled on his pacifier, eyes wide, uncomprehending. Mace sighed. "That's okay, buddy. You don't got to say nothin'. I know you love me." He bent to kiss his son's forehead. The stylists from Ten had dressed him in a miniature version of Mace's simple tuxedo, and he'd already drooled all over the collar. But he still smelled like baby, and he was quiet, which was all Mace could really ask for. He wanted to hold his son, to be comforted by his steady heart beat. But while drool on Mason's collar was acceptable, he very much doubted Julian would be pleased if Mace walked down the aisle smelling like kid ick.

Instead, he tried to remind himself that things had never been better with Julian. Yes, this was his own agenda, but they loved each other. Mace hadn't asked for much over the years. And in the end it had been Julian who had insisted they have two events, one in the Capitol and one in Two. Mace had resisted, until the promise of two cakes and two wedding nights had been floated. After, he'd agreed with anything Julian wanted that fell within their lavish budget.

But if he had to feel like this twice, he wasn't sure all the cake in the world was worth it. He had his hands beneath Mason's arms, ready to lift him when the door opened. Mace narrowed his gaze at the stylists.

"It's time."

Olive swatted Mace's hands away, scooping Mason up into her own arms. Mace scowled, but thought it might dampen the day if he killed his Capitol escort, much though he loathed her. At least the feeling was mutual. She waltzed down the hallway, following the barricade that had been erected to protect their ceremony from the press. It had been a delicate negotiation, Mace understood. In the end, they had been permitted a semi-private ceremony, if only because managing a mob of ten thousand well wishers was too much for the Capitol to handle in the midst of the 67th Games. So they were given the Conference Hall, with its bright atrium, and a full complement of Peacekeepers to keep others out. Of course the ceremony would be filmed and cast to the masses, timed appropriately around the Games.

It was not lost on Mace that tributes died while he walked down the tiled aisle. In equal measure he mourned and exalted them. If not for their sacrifice - for the many sacrifices since the 59th - he would not be in this atrium, tying himself for eternity to Julian Bryze.

He took his place beyond the pond, at the front of the atrium. He nodded to Arbor, who stood at his side, and then to Topaz, who stood opposite. It took him a moment, but then he found Saffron among the foliage, corralling Juliet and Mason. He winked, a false confidence. Yes, he cared about Arbor and Topaz and Saffron. He might have even loved them. But that bond paled in comparison to complicated mess that he felt for Julian. "Pinch me if it looks like I'm going to pass out," he murmured to Arbor. He could already feel the sweat lining his forehead, a vague sickness in his stomach.

With all of the excitement and craze buzzing around the bridal suite, Julian almost felt as if he was about to enter the arena again. Almost. He had just wrapped up his pre-dressing interview to be aired with the Embryze wedding special that would be broadcast throughout the nation. Cream had sat in on the interview as well to discuss the styling of the event and was now ushering the groom-to-be to a private dressing room. Julian hadn’t been given much say in most of the ceremony, including his wardrobe. As part of his bargain with President Snow, though closed, this would still have to be a publicized affair. That of course meant that a certain level of showmanship would be expected. Julian Bryze was born and groomed for this sort of spotlight though, and if anything, the media helped to ease his nerves.

Cream and her usual team began working quickly undressing and redressing their human doll. Each was quite accustomed to Julian’s moody demeanor by now, so they were pleasantly surprised to find the temperamental Victor so calm. Julian surveyed his reflection as the lavish, champagne colored suit with hints of blush tones was pieced together to perfectly fit his lithe frame. He had never been one to fantasize about a wedding, nor had it been something he particularly wanted. Mace didn’t ask for much though, and though their relationship had it’s faults, Julian couldn’t have asked for anyone to be more patient with him than Mace had. So here he stood, allowing Cream to spritz the waves of his golden locks with shimmery hairspray to make the man he loved happy.

Once they got the natural, yet smoky look of his lids to perfectly compliment his icy eyes, Cream proclaimed him a “vision of perfection” with tears in her eyes. Usually Julian responded with cold indifference or a snotty remark, but with no walls up today, he couldn’t help but find himself a bit emotional in return. Every member of the styling team’s jaws nearly dropped as Julian beamed back at them and pulled them in for a light hug.

He returned to the main room of the suite for photographs and more film footage. Regardless of whether it was the shimmering fabric of his elaborate suit or the rare, wide smile and continual laughter that escaped Julian’s lips, it was clear the he was glowing today. The photography snapped several shots of the full Bryze clan: Julian, Pashmina, Serge and baby Juliet. Despite his joy, there was still a hole in his heart today where Clarity should have been. Thankfully he had Topaz to fill her role and stand by his side as he said his vows today. He really didn’t know what he’d do without her.

Butterflies ignited in Julian’s stomach as the band struck up in the distance to note that the ceremony was about to begin. Numerous hugs and well wishes were shared as the room slowly emptied with the procession. Once Topaz left for the aisle, Julian was left with his father.

“It’s still not too late to change your mind,” Serge teased.

“Dad...” Julian rolled his eyes with a laugh.

“I know, I know,” he replied with a genuine smile. “I’m so proud of you, son. I know Midas and Clarity would be too.”

Julian took in a deep breath as his father placed a hand on his shoulder.

“I think Midas is glad you have Mace to take care of you since he can’t anymore.”

“Them taking care of me?” Julian scoffed.

Serge laughed. If he would have had the ability to express himself properly, he would have explained he meant emotionally. But he did not. The music shifted once more to signal their cue, and Serge ushered his only son toward the door. “And I’m glad too—but don’t repeat that.”

The Bryze men shared a quick embrace, and Julian smiled into his father's shoulder. The Bryze's would never be the most graceful family when it came to displaying emotion or discussing feelings, but Serge's brief statement was his own way of finally accepting Mace into the family. The older victor released his son and gave him a light pat on the back as two avoxes opened the door into the atrium. The lush aisle was decorated with beautiful arching floral arrangements in blush and champagne tones to compliment the groom's suit. The crowd of guests turned in unison and cameras flashed and zoomed in as all attention shifted to the youngest Bryze victor. Julian's breath caught in his throat as the moment washed over him. The room might as well have been empty though, for there was only one man of importance present. A soft smile kissed Julian’s lips as his light eyes locked with the gray storm of a gaze that belonged to his lifeline, his hope and the salvation that he had searched so long for: Mace Emberstatt.

For the vast majority of his life, Mace had always done what he needed to do. He followed (most) of Ma's directions, got a job when he needed more food than his ration, worked hard because he'd been told to do so. And when the Capitol gave him a knife for each finger, he killed because he'd been told to live. No one had to tell him that Julian was the next step in life; it was obvious, the moment the President crowned his golden head. He fell in love, because that's what you do when you are twenty and rich and alive.

But no one could have told him what it would feel like to love Julian Bryze. Nothing in the world could compare. It was freedom and comfort, ecstasy and defeat. Nothing in life had so defeated Mace as love, because there could be no victory in life without Julian at his side.

He wiped sweat from the top of his brow, marveling. His hands moved with purpose, no trembling betraying him. It was probably nerves that triggered his metabolism, but it didn't matter. He was warmed through and through for the first time in nearly a decade. Standing in the atrium in the heart of the Capitol, he had found himself again, in the exact same place as he'd lost almost everything. There were still losses, blank spaces where Clarity and Elon should have stood. They couldn't honor their loved ones the way they had wanted, not with the cameras rolling and Caesar Flickerman at the helm. Still, they'd found ways.

Mace touched his left breast pocket. Inside, he had tucked a page from Elon's teaching journal. On it, he'd penned a simple little poem, clearly intended for the youngest children of the community home.

hand-in-hand

He didn't intend to read it or share it with anyone. It was simply the act of carrying the journal page, of holding Elon's words close, that made his presence felt. And Mace wasn't hiding anymore. He was ready to taken Julian's hand, to declare himself in front of the Capitol and Districts that this was the only person for him. His person. Forever.

His heart slammed against his rib cage the moment Julian stepped into view, resplendent in a champagne suit. Mace grinned boyishly, giddy with the vision of his partner, his lover. With every step Julian came closer, Mace felt their relationship cementing, becoming something concrete. They didn't need a piece of paper or the cameras or President Snow's approval. All Mace needed was to hear the words I do.

The rehearsal had been very specific about when they were to hold hands, look at one another, recite this or affirm that. Mace tossed it all out the window. He reached for Julian when he was barely at arm's length, gripped his soft hand with his calloused one. Caesar was already chittering, covering up Mace's whispered, "You are breathtaking."

The voices of the scores of people who told them they should get married fell away. Even Caesar's tenor, obnoxious though it was, faded. He wanted to hear Julian, and be heard. Flickerman had to ask Mace twice if he was ready to share his vows, and at length Mace cast him one of his more practiced I will when I'm ready steel gazes. No one could tell him when he should get married, or when he should say his vows, or when he should hold Julian's hands. No one could, because no one else had the privilege of marrying Julian Bryze.

Mace cleared his throat. "I ain't ever sure how to start tellin' you how I love you. Because I don't just love you, Julian. I more than love you. The day you said yes to me I was the luckiest man alive. Truth is though, I was the luckiest all the days I've known you, before and after, because you make this life worth livin'. I wouldn't be here at all if not for you." He paused, his throat closing as his grey eyes lined with tears. He dropped his voice to a whisper as he gazed at Julian. "And it's a better life you've shown me than I could have ever known." And that was it, all the words he had. Arbor passed him the wedding band Julian had designed. Mace switched his grip, to hold his fiance's left hand. He took a shuddering breath, full of nerves and joy, and said the legally binding words the Capitol had designed: "Julian, I commit myself and my life to you, from this day forward, forever more."
