[Day 1] Foil Round 1: Fray, Ka. vs. Shoal

Villain Shoal —

Based on name and size alone, Villain Shoal ought to be the most formidable competitor in everything he attempted. Much to the dismay of those in charge of his training, however, the soft-hearted Career was no more villainous than the thin foil in his hand. He offered a sportsmanlike smile to his opponent — Fray, no surprise considering how many of them filled the fencing brackets — and received a suggestive eyebrow raise in reply.

"I hope you’re as bad as your name suggests. I like bad boys." Truth be told, the overlarge District Four hadn't the slightest inclination towards mischief. Nor was he as brutish as he looked; the last nose he'd bloodied had been his own, and even then the sight of blood had made him queasy. He'd play along though; the District One wouldn't see through the guise if he wasn't looking. "See for yourself," he invited, the oft-practiced overtones of self-assuredness highlighted in his voice.

"Ready?"

Villain smirked. "En garde."

Villain Shoal —

At four points to three, Villain held a tenuous lead over the boy from District One. His four-point streak had seemingly put a dent in his opponent's confidence, which was something, even if the flirt across the strip was gaining on him again.

The District Four felt a small smile creep over his face as he beat away Kaiser Fray's blade and went in for a lunge. And since combat was never Villain's strong suit — after all, it was hard to get good at skills where the end results made you woozy — it genuinely felt good to do well. He didn't kid himself that he'd be able to take home a medal, but if he could win one bout at least, well, that would be good enough for him.

Villain Shoal —

It seemed as if his opponent had tightened up his defenses considerably. Villain was having a hard time getting the point of his foil past the Fray boy's blade, and half the time when he managed, he couldn't land it on target. He did his best to retain his cool — and he was still holding a slight lead — but a cloud of doubt crept over him, like a storm rolling into port. Focus, he urged himself, not that it did him any good.

Villain Shoal —

Villain took a hit center-mass, which drew a grunt out of him. His resolve strengthened, and he decided he wasn't okay with losing this match. He opened up a slew of quick lunges, trying to force the Fray boy off the back of the strip.

Villain Shoal —

Villain Shoal was starting to feel reasonably good about the way his bout was going. He and Fray were neck-and-neck for awhile, going back and forth, but it seemed like the District Four might actually be pulling ahead. One victory, that was all Villain wanted — one victory, and then he'd play it by ear. Just something so he could have some kind of tangible proof that, as far as careers were concerned, his brain didn't make total waste of his build.
