ARCHERY

Welcome to the Individual Archery tournament of the very first Panem Olympic Games! The archery complex is located alongside the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you all warm up with your coaches before your turn comes to shoot, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character getting ready for their shots, and then paste the code [*roll=10] without the asterisks THREE TIMES (you are taking three shots) into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. You will roll a number 1-10 on each dice, and that represents the number of points you got from your shot/where your arrow landed on the following target:

At the end of your shots, each of the points you scored will be added up, and I will continually update this post with the scores. After you roll, feel free to edit your post and roleplay your character actually making the shots and their reaction to it. But all of this should occur in ONE post, not multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your shots whenever you please. Keep in mind, though, that this is meant to move pretty fast, so we're not looking for exceedingly long posts.

This was a bad idea from the start. Nat isn't an archer - or at least, he wants to be. Sort of. Maybe. For reasons that aren't entirely his, anyway, he wants to be an archer, wants to hit the yellow bulls-eye like he was born into this rather than had a panicked crash course over the past few days after his dismal swimming time with a highly amused sibling at his side, talking him through aim (like Leon's never missed a shot in his life - Nat's seen him do that once or twice at least - and it's not like Leon's always hitting the center, either).

Either way he's up against a whole lot of kids from Two - most of them who, he notes nervously, are taller than him. I'm not ready! He's going to make a fool of himself right off the bat - why did he sign up for this? On some stupid whim, on a dumb belief that he can?

(He'll always be a child, here.)

"Just do your best," Leon says from where he's pretending to lounge on benches. Nat can see the tightness around his brother's eyes and the deep purple rings they sit upon, can almost hear him thinking, If these were the Games, and this is all you have, then you're dead.

Nat sticks his tongue out at him, and the smile he receives is more genuine.

"Nat Krigel!"

"Off you go," Leon says, reaching out to toe his brother off. Nat dodges his foot, sticks his tongue out again, then stalks off with all the dignity he can muster.

Here I am competing in the archery event. Shouldn't be too hard right? All I have to do is hit a few bullseyes and call it a day. Problem is the bow has never been kind to me. I'm more comfortable with melee weapons like the sword or spear. At least with those type of weapons the attack is always in my control. Once the arrow is shot the rest is up to luck. Here's hoping I have luck on my side. I ready myself for disappointment. There's no way I will win this event. With that in mind, I release the first arrow followed by the second and third. No time to dwell on the score. My time with this event is now over for better or worse.

I can feel everybody's eyes on me. It's like when you know somebody's watching you, when you see them in the corner of your vision and the hairs on your neck stand up and yet you can't quite look up to face them because if you do, you might break down. There's a hundred people back home who know I can do this, who expect me to hit 3 clean shots in a row with ease. "Alita does that for breakfast" they'd say. "Alita could fire one at me all the way here and it'd still land right in my bowl of cereal perfectly." It's like I can see all their eyes watching me through the cameras - familiar faces: Dad, Soren, Leila, Dedric, all of them. I can own this event without even trying. Clinical. Unemotional. Clinical. Unemotional. It drums through me but I still can't stop shaking.

Be your own anchor, someone said to me long ago. Focus, you can do this. I can, I can, I can.

Though the high jump had been some sort of redemption, I had still ended short of the podium, even if it was only by a place. Fourth was supposed to be an accomplishment, and I suppose others saw it that way, but myself, and my family included, did not see this in the same light. They saw it as nothing less than a failure, and I’d like to account my views to their overbearing attitude. The blame for any of our self-hate would never fall on our parents, regardless of how apparent it was. We had to make a name for ourselves, and so far, none of us had done a very good job.

This was the last day of competition, and most would be sent on a chance at redemption or just another shot at glory, but I saw this last event as neither of the two. In fact, I saw this only as another shot to prove that any of my previous training had paid off, or just another opportunity to reveal gaps in skill. This was simply an evaluation, and it happened to take place staring down the tip of a purple arrow.

This was not a last chance, only the start of something new and unknown, and either outcome, whether it involved a medal around my neck or not, would have some sort of positive affect on not only myself, but also on the absolutely awful mentality that surrounded the Blackmore name.

It was finally the event she had been looking forward to since the games began. Archery, the one think that she knew in her heart had been designed for her. To pull back a string and know that the only thing preventing death for a target was her small finger. Athena loved it. She loved everything that archery implied.

It had been days since she last held a bow, back in the training center. Her fingers spasmed as she finally managed to wrap them around the wooden handle. It was as if they were more excited for this moment than she was. She took her arrows silently... as if the vibration of her voice might have broken their narrow edges. It was finally time for her victory.

With a smirk she pulled back the rope, and in quick succession shot three arrows into the plain target.

Victory is all she knows. Victory is the air she breathes.

Victory.
Is.
Everything.
