If people are right in saying I look like my father, then I guess I am gifted. After all, he enjoys reminding my siblings and I of what eye candy he was at our age, and how little has changed in the decades after. I guess I can see what they are talking about, moppy brown hair, thick eyebrows, and brooding features are only the beginning of the similarities between the two of us. Once when I was younger, I even mistook an old photo of him as one of myself.

I have a square jaw and squinty, over-sensitive eyes that practically glue shut when the sun is out or, ripred forbid, a gust of wind catches me off guard. It's one of my biggest weaknesses, Father claims. I have a short, thick neck that meets broad shoulders and makes me seem a lot more cocky than I feel. My hands are usually sweaty and clenched into fists, both because of the nervous energy that stays pent up within me no matter what I do, which means things like holding hands and high-fiving people is something I try to avoid in order to save myself from embarrassment.

Despite my mother's absence, my family is still one of the more wealthy ones. This means that we can afford nice clothes as long as we treat them with respect, and we can also afford a nice home that is big enough to accompany all six of us. Except for my two youngest brothers, we all have our own room, and I think mine may be the most boring. Really, other than the small hole in my closet door that also rewarded me with a permanent scar on my left hand in the shape of an arrowhead, it is just white walls littered with holiday lights and a small bed dressed with a blue comforter.

My room fits who I am, I think. I have always just blended in. My personality is the most absolute difference from my father. He has always said his personality is what makes him so appealing, and the fact that I look like him and don't receive nearly as much attention as he did seconds the notion, I suppose.

Perhaps it's because I am so unsure of myself, of the decisions I make, I mean. Nothing comes to me like lightning, not schooling, or friends, or even training. I question every single aspect of my life, and maybe it makes me a control freak, but I think it just makes me dull. Father always said I wasn't stupid, I just learned at my own pace, but I think I fit the description of stupid pretty well.

I guess I would be lying if I said I didn't sometimes wish I had friends to go and see, or train with after school. I do. But I am too different from most people in my grade. They are all about killing and partying and going crazy and, to me, it's a bit ridiculous. I guess I am just old-fashioned, chivalrous, even.

My training is a one-sided love. I do as my father says and I train every waking hour, and it's obvious I'm not completely pathetic, but I certainly am not on the level my peers are on. My father says he doesn't think my heart is in it, and I don't see where he would get that idea, after all, it's the one thing I do that impresses him.

I like that I get to start my story off with the words "Once upon a time, but my life is no fairytale. My parents were young when they married, and whether or not it was because of my mother's pregnancy with my older brother, I'm still unsure. Regardless, first one child, then the second came, and then me, then another and another. We were the typical District One family, wealthy and plentiful, but unlike the others, we held family values above those of stardom.

And then Mom got sick.

I was only ten, and it happened quick. The doctors said it was her lungs that did it, and now every time I am short of breath or even when I yawn, I remember how bright and cheery her face once was, and how she almost looked like a ghost too lazy to rise from bed, an oxygen mask her only accessory other than a nightgown and a sweaty brow when she passed.

Things changed when she left. I refused to go in my parents' room, and to this day I still find myself hesitating at the door. My little sister all but burned her dresses, and my younger brother hardly ever ate. But I think the most dramatic change was my father. Now that I am older, I think he may just be looking for someone to fill the void Mom left, but at least once a month he is introducing us to some new lady he met at the gym or the cafe by our house, or on the street. Always pretty, always young, and always with money symbols clouding their vision.

He didn't just become more friendly with women, though. He also became the same die-hard jock that never was that lived in every other house in our District is home to. His obsession with our training, with making us the best, confused me. We had always been a career family, but we never treated the games like some twisted religion. I was confused when the new rules were set into motion, and for a long time I failed on purpose, just in the hope that my father was playing some sick joke on the five of us. Sadly, he wasn't.

If anything he has gotten worse. When we get home from school he doesn't even bother asking how our day was before tossing clothes at us and barking for us to get ready so we can get to the Center.

My life started out as a fairy tale, and it was one most people would kill for. But one tragic event was enough to snap it all in two, and now I don't think there is ever going to be a happy ending for Prince Sable Faulker.
