watching waves crash upon shore(Death blitz)

  She's still in some kind of trance and you can only watch as it seems to lace into her and rip to to tiny pieces. Part of you is enraged. It isn't her damn fault! She doesn't have to tear her own heart out over anyone dying. 

     Mostly, you're angry with yourself. You should've seen it coming. Should've seen the signs. Should've read the writing on the wall (is that a song somewhere? you wonder). 

     You can protect her from the creatures on the outside, ready to shred her flesh that you kinda feel possessive of even though you don't own her, but you can't protect her from the monsters on the inside.

     Give up! the dark and lazy part of your mind says at it takes a swig from a bottle of some kind of alcohol. Can't save her! Can't save yourself! Why bother? Lost cause, bro. Move on and bang other chicks.

     She jerks away from the couch, bending over her knees and running trembling fingers through her hair. Fingers like a bristle brush. Or maybe a harsh comb. The kind that rips out more hair than it smooths.

    The tendrils of copper stick between the creases of her fingers as she drags them over her scalp.

     "Sail, would you come surfing with me, please?" she asks.

     Her voice is broken. Broken and leaving and your heart nearly breaks looking into those eyes that are so beyond blue that you'd like to melt into your socks if you knew that wouldn't leave a huge mess of a puddle on the floor for someone else to clean up.

     You'd been surfing once or twice. Enough to learn how. Nothing fancy. You weren't positive you'd be able to keep up.

     "Please?" she adds, her words trembling like her finger tips.

     You take her hand in yours and bring it to your lips and kiss her palms that quake and race with a pulse that is too sad for you to dwell too long on.

   "Anything for you, love," you murmur, before you kiss her fingertips. "Anything to make you feel better."
