The earth trembled in fear, and the sky cried tears of many different sizes on the ground over flowing the tiny holes trapped inside the rough terrain. Stampede of animals looking for safety crashed through the ocean formed in the depths of the district. Birds sang high in the skies when Evelyn Truus came into the world. A tiny baby weighing five pounds two ounces rested happily in her mother's arms. Water dripped on her tiny face as a mother broke down with joy staring in the big blue eyes of her daughter. A brother gathered around poking fun at the tiny girl placed comfortably in his arms. A smile spread wide across his face as he stared down running a hand through her head full of hair. Nobody realized how weak the tiny girl was, but Evelyn grew stronger and stronger every single day fighting for survival in a world protected by a mother and father's love. Each day she fought, and somehow she managed to survive in a world forgotten by others.

Evelyn Truus was a survivor.

Life hasn't been easy. Trapped within her mind staring at pebbles spread unevenly across the ground, Evelyn moves around one step at a time struggling against the ways of life. Fingers pointed at her in judgmental ways spreading cruel, harsh remarks she never understood the meaning of. To her, the remarks were meaningless words. With her head tilted forward, and her arms spread, she pranced away flapping her wings mocking a bird. Understanding the world Evelyn felt trapped in wasn't an easy task for anyone. Reading never came easy, and writing wasn't one of her strong points, but if you asked her to name a bird, she could tell you their names as well as colors and the tune they sung each morning as the sun rose high in the sky. The arms of her mother rest around her holding the tiny girl in her arms keeping her safe from the evils lurking in the world, yet even the strongest of mothers had no power in fully keeping her children safe from the arms of the enemy.

Bright blue eyes stare out the window watching her mother twirl her long blonde hair, bleached from the sun, in a french braid. Evelyn loved watching her mother fix her hair although strands of hair flew every direction within minutes; she loved running around, and it was impossible for her hands to stay still longer than a few seconds. Despite her constant movements, Evelyn couldn't gain any muscles - she looked like her skin was randomly tossed on the fragile bones holding her body up; it was safe to say Evelyn was grossly underweight, but that didn't stop her from doing the things she enjoyed. When birds flew over her head, she would run around below them with her wings spread wide singing their song of peace. It was when she was alone, her life was at peace. Without a single person around forcing their will upon her breaking the patterns of her life throwing the routine completely out of schedule. A routine was necessary for her because without it chaos surrounded her making the fourteen year old extremely uncomfortable.

When the family gathers around for dinner or any gathering, Evelyn stays seated in a corner away from everyone. Eyes of those around pierce through the veil resting in front of her. Her entire body quivers in fear with each passing second. Constant chatter flies through her ears bouncing around throughout her tiny skull. Hands pressed hard against her ears blocking out the sounds because they didn't belong. The world was loud leaving her trapped within its walls grasping her tighter with each possible second. Deep inside Evelyn wanted those around her to leave. Her room was her comfort zone when many gathered around. An army of tiny wooden birds, created by her father, resided inside her room. Each bird had its own name. Evelyn had a huge passion for birds since they were free from the grasp of anyone in the world, yet her mother trapped her inside the nest wrapping her with the tender love and care every child deserved only Evelyn deserved much more than anyone could ever give.

Temper tantrums ran array when she didn't get her way. A tiny finger pointed at the object she wanted, but her mother wanted her to say the words as she didn't understand why Evelyn never said a word. Frustration pent-up inside the tiny girl while she clenched her hands into fists before pounding them against the ground over and over. Fake cries burst from her lips echoing throughout the empty room. "Evelyn, what do you want?" Her mother would ask. It wasn't until later in life Evelyn developed the skills to speak, yet sentences never made sense alerted her mother something was wrong. sometimes one or two words was all she would say. Each day her mother sat her down working with her as much as she could. The teachers in the school never understood why someone attended classes every day despite being unable to read or write. It didn't matter. She was trying to learn, but the respect of learning wasn't one she ever understood, but with the help of her mother, Evelyn learned.

Flushed cheeks stood out tremendously on her pale face when she watched her brother take care of the farm animals. Every morning she helped him feed the animals before the sun rose in the sky. It was a morning routine for them, Kraygon would wake her up, and Evelyn would help him. Of course, he carried the heavy food buckets considering she didn't have the strength, and she waddled like a duck with each step she took. Three scoops of feed for each animal. Sweat ran from her thin brow dripping into her eyes staining the whites red. On the inside she enjoyed helping, yet her face remained blank of every emotion. Understanding the expressions made by those around her flew over head, and many times Kraygon had trouble knowing if she enjoyed what she was doing or not. Sometimes she was happy, but the smile never spread across her face. Even when she flew with the birds, on the outside she was emotionless. The only time anyone knew what she was feeling was when she threw a tantrum, and even then it was hard.

In many ways Evelyn was like a toddler. She doesn't understand the meaning of life. This allowed her to live carefree without any worries in the world. Her family placed food before her, she had a bed, a roof over her head, an extremely caring family. Evelyn had everything every child needed, but when it came to sharing with others, she didn't understand the meaning of taking turns. Her father tried explaining she had to share her toys with her brother, yet when his time came, and he took the toy, she pitched a fit until he decided he didn't want the toy anymore. In attempts to teach his daughter how to share her father did whatever he could. Sometimes he spent many hours on the floor with her, yet he never understood why his daughter was so different from Kraygon. "Evelyn, this is yours. I want you to give it to me. We take turns. It's okay to take turns." He spoke this sentence until he was blue in the face. Eventually after a lot of work, she understood sharing, but the tantrums never once stopped. The toy was her's, and in her mind nobody else should touch it.

Evelyn stood in the square in the furthest corner from the screen watching the games on the screen. Her tiny hands clenched tightly as a tantrum began forming slowly. Being around people wasn't ever easy for her, and now people were gathering around her with strange expressions written across their faces. "Mama." A small quiet voice fell on deaf ears as the chatter of those around grew louder and louder. She clapped her hands against her ears attempting to block out all the sounds, but her attempts were futile. Tears fell down the face of her mother dripping on the ground before anyone could stop them, yet Evelyn had no idea why the water fell from her eyes. Her hands relaxed by her sides. "Mama." She said again longing for her mother to hear her, but the incoherent sobs surrounded the words flying from the mouths of those around. "Esme's dead." Were the only two words she was ever capable of making out, but it wasn't enough because she didn't understand. All Evelyn knew was Esme, her cousin, was missing, and deep inside she hoped Esme would return.

Little did she know she would never see her cousin again.
