Don't be afraid to be weak

I don’t expect to win these Games.

I know I shouldn’t be thinking like that, because people who think they’re going to lose almost always end up losing. It’s the truth, though, isn’t it? I have no reason to lie, so why not be honest?

It’s not just that I know I can’t fight. (And I mean 'can’t' both literally and emotionally. I mean, I’m a vegetarian for a reason- I can’t even stand the thought of injuring someone else, let alone actually doing it. Maybe if worse comes to worst, but...) It’s more that... well... I’m not fighting for anyone, because no one is waiting for me. I don’t have anyone, like Jango has Veronica, to push me on. District Twelve is fine without me and I know it; the only ones to really miss me will be the rocks, and they’ve seen countless lives pass and fall. I’m not desperate to get back.

So no, I don’t expect to win.

Don't be too proud to be strong

You’re probably wondering what I’m doing here, then. Not a lot of people get picked to die and welcome it.

I could have asked for volunteers, but there wouldn’t be any, I can tell you that. There rarely are, and the ones that show up don’t volunteer for strangers. Even if someone had offered, though, it’s not like I could have let them. How can I let someone else die in my place? I would never sleep again. I would see their face and their death every day for the rest of my life. More to the point, that’s just- wrong!

I’m going to die, but I’m going to die so that someone else can live.

Just look into your heart, my friend

Oh, look at me, going on about death and morals when I haven’t even introduced myself. I’m Aranica Petros. My last name means stone and my first name is the name of a type of lizard that lives in rocks, so my name really fits me because my best friends are rocks.

I know a lot of things that most people don’t. I know how to tell if a cloud is trying to kill you, and I can talk to trees. I can judge when assassins are going to appear by watching the weather, and I can coax flint into giving me sparks faster.

One thing I don’t know how to do is make human friends. I try, and if people stick around then we usually make friends really fast, but usually they run away from me. I don’t know why... it’s not like I’m scary, right? I promise I’m really, really nice.

That will be the return to yourself

I don’t remember a lot of my past. I used to dream about having a brother, but I don’t think he ever really existed. I’m pretty sure I’m twelve (that’s what the District records have me down as), but I was alone in a cave for a really long time, so it was hard to tell time. Honestly, I don’t even know if Aranica is my real name... but that’s what the rocks call me, and I trust them.

This isn’t about the past, though, is it? It’s about the present, and the very limited future.

The return to innocence

I’m going to die. We’ve covered that. But I’m not just going to give up and go quietly, either. I’m going to survive, because I’m good at living on very little. I’m going to smile every day, so that some kind of hope lives in the Arena.

Above all, I’m going to help my friends. I don’t have any yet, but I know I’ll make some, and since I’m going to die anyway, why not die for someone else? Someone has to go home, after all.

Aranica Petros, the female tribute of District Twelve, is going to make a difference.
