Mace sweat through the cold afternoon with a vengeance. There was enough daylight in Ten on this side of the year, even if he rose with the light and turned in when it set. Times past, he'd have slept the entire month of January, while the cows huddled together in tight packs for warmth. Those days belonged to someone else now, a rancher boy with a quick temper and no understanding that his family was all he needed.
He let the axe fall one more time, splitting the log cleanly in half. He squinted in the near-dark to be sure no splinters had frayed before hoisting the pieces beneath his arms. "C'mon, Sew. Let's get a fire started for Julian." He smiled despite the frost creeping up his boots. They trudged from the back of the mansion's property, through icy snow drifts and barren trees. They didn't talk, but that's exactly what Mace loved most about Sewanee.
He tipped his hat at Oscar's cottage as they hiked past, even though he couldn't be sure the lad was in. At first, when it had just been Julian, Sew and himself, it had been easy to keep track of his household. Then, Regalia had come along, and then Mason and Juliet, and then Oscar, and now they just kept adding folks at an annual clip. It was beginning to feel like the Northern Community Home, and Mace wouldn't have it any other way.
He brushed his boots on the porch but still tracked in snowflakes. The sounds of toddlers screaming and laughing filled the house. He didn't bother trying to be quiet. He stomped into the great room, dumped the logs in the fireplace, and then began the hunt for the kindling and matches, which had been hidden out of reach of Mason and Juliet, but often eluded him as well. The phone rang - a play phone or a real one? - and he ignored it.
"Mace!" Reggie bellowed from the kitchen. Usually she didn't bother him at all when someone called. Too often it was Capitolites looking to speak with the Victor, although those calls became fewer and fewer as more Games were won.
"Busy!" He hollered back, wrapping his hands around the matches tucked behind a book he'd never read.
Regalia marched into the great room, a dont fuck with me look on her face. Mace sighed, handed the matches to Sew, and followed her to the rotary phone. "Who is it?"
She folded her arms as she shook her head.
Mace picked up the received, put it to his cold ear, and breathed over the mouthpiece. "Hello?"
