She knocked with the flat of her palm, because her knuckles were worn nearly to the bone. She loved the space, the sheer capacity of the victor's village mansion. But constantly having to rap on closed doors had taken its toll. she'd heard that some of the more wealthy Victors in lower districts had a bell system strung throughout the house. If only they could hire an electrician instead of another horse handler. "This is urgent," she called, her sing-song voice edged with a threat.

"Whatever it is, you can ask me later."

"I'm not asking you a damn thing through a door, brother dearest." Nothing. Her palm met the wood again, punctuating her plea. "I don't even care if you're naked."

Shuffling. A shadow along the frame. "Just take care of it, Regalia."

She scowled as she slapped the door, wishing it was less wooden and more fleshy. Reggie spent the remainder of the afternoon stalking the Emberstatt employees. Fabian was easy enough to find in the nursery, but it took her the better part of an hour to track down Sew and Oscar on the ranging grounds. By the time she had herded them all into the kitchen, she was exhausted, and there was no one to cook for her but, well, herself.

"Hope y'all were itching for some soup cuz that's about the only thing I've got left in me. Fabian, you're on chopping duty. I'll start thawing the stock. And don't you even think about leaving, Sewanee Clark. We've got business to discuss." She settled a loaf of bread and a serrated knife in front of Sew, and then turned to Oscar. "Guess you get to set the table. Nothing fancy, since it looks like it'll just be the four of us at this All Hands Meeting. Ridiculous." She flipped on the faucet and let the tepid water run over the frozen jar of beef stock. It had been a gift from one of the ranchers, intended for Mace, but if he didn't get a drop of soup that would suit Reggie just fine. Just because he's a victor don't mean he can shirk all of his duties without consequence.

She tapped the jar. It barely wobbled. She turned to the island, eyes flat and lips puckered. "Gonna be awhile til dinner, boys. Might as well get started. As y'all know, in a week Mace and Julian will be going back to Two for the next six months. So we got a week to figure out what that means for all of us. Now I know we mostly just go our separate ways, but this house has gotten to be too much for just Sew and I - begging your pardon - to keep up in the off season. I've got a few ideas of how we could earn our keep. Ma's asked that we take some of the youngin's from the community home, which would keep you flush, Fabian. I know Mace has been after me about fixin' the sagging porch at the Lowe home but god knows, I ain't never been any good with a hammer. Suppose we could fix a lot of things in six months, plus keeping Whicker and that traitorous llama in check. I don't know. I'd like for us to think about all the work we could get done and then tell Mace that's what we're doin'. What do you think?" She put her hands to the island, sweeping her gaze up and down. Not a one of them was a talker, but if they didn't come up with some solid ideas, she'd be left for the winter alone with Sewanee, which was to say she'd be totally alone inside of an empty home. She simply couldn't stand to do that again, ever.

Does, Says, Thinks

She had fetched him while he was checking the paddock fences, a small scowl on her face that told him there would be trouble. He went with her silently, as though she had thrown a halter over his head and clipped him to a lead. Soon enough he found that he wasn't the only to be rounded up around the kitchen table by their employer's sister. Mace was more of a friend to him than an employer, and in truth he was never paid for what services he performed - unless he were to count the food that he was supplied with, which he supposed was more than ample a price. Besides, being able to work with Mace's horse - something he hoped to make plural in the spring - was a joy to him. The old stallion wasn't much more than a lawnmower nowadays but the company was nice. He didn't know what he could say about the newest arrival however.

Before him, and the two others, Reggie was standing like she was a general about to command her troops. "Hope y'all were itching for some soup cuz that's about the only thing I've got left in me. Fabian, you're on chopping duty. I'll start thawing the stock. And don't you even think about leaving, Sewanee Clark. We've got business to discuss." Oscar retreated unconsciously from the blade that she nearly tossed at Sew, only relaxing slightly when he saw the bread that she had laid beside it. He took a breath in when she looked at him, ready for his order, and trying not to look her in the eyes. If an animal was skittish, or angry, it was best not to show any aggression or it may go on the attack. He didn't feel like being mauled by Regalia Stromstatt right now. He was sure a slight flush hit his cheeks as the image of it rose in his mind.

Her voice cut through to sober him some, "Guess you get to set the table. Nothing fancy, since it looks like it'll just be the four of us at this All Hands Meeting. Ridiculous." She moved off to the sink and started to thaw something that looked rather like frozen gravy - he suspected it was what would give the soup flavour, but it wasn't as though he did much cooking - and he stood to start setting the table. Dodging past her to reach the correct cupboard, he made special care to not touch her. His hand was on the handle when she started speaking again and he froze. "Gonna be awhile til dinner, boys. Might as well get started. As y'all know, in a week Mace and Julian will be going back to Two for the next six months. So we got a week to figure out what that means for all of us."

He unfroze, sensing that if he dallied to hear everything she was going to say - since it was clear she was going to start a lecture - he might get smacked with a soup ladle. The porcelain dishes, plain and sturdy, in his hands were something he had to adjust for as he carefully moved past Reggie once more. This time his fingers brushed against her and he sucked in his stomach. She didn't seem to notice - or care - as she continued. "Now I know we mostly just go our separate ways, but this house has gotten to be too much for just Sew and I - begging your pardon - to keep up in the off season. He let out his breath in a huff, almost a chuckle.

Carefully he set down the bowls on the end of the table, double-checking that he had grabbed four. He had, so now he had to get the cutlery and some glasses. It really wasn't too difficult a job so maybe he could relax until the food was ready. "I know Mace has been after me about fixin' the sagging porch at the Lowe home but god knows, I ain't never been any good with a hammer. Suppose we could fix a lot of things in six months, plus keeping Whicker and that traitorous llama in check." Just as he was about to comment that he would certainly help with those he choked. The mention of the llama - the result of Mace's latest impulse - and her use of the word traitorous caught him completely off guard. He coughed a couple times, trying to fix his throat so he could breathe again.

The llama was indeed one of the biggest pains he had had to deal with so far. The thing never gave him any clue as to what to do with it, except to stay the hell away from it because it liked to glare at everyone. It had gotten to the point where he simply tossed hay into the pen where it was kept and left it to itself except when the pen needed to be cleaned. The damn thing wasn't exactly cleanly and he was sure that it liked to stand in damp straw because every time he went in there its entire bedding was wet. Not to mention it liked to spit.

He was still recovering from his choking episode as Reggie finished speaking. " I don't know. I'd like for us to think about all the work we could get done and then tell Mace that's what we're doin'. What do you think?" He took a moment to settle himself and then went back to getting the cutlery and glasses. As Reggie moved he quickly decided to go for the cutlery first since he didn't have to move passed her to get to the drawer. He yanked at the handle a little harder than was necessary and the silverware crashed around inside. A little sheepishly, he fixed the stacks of forks, spoons, and knives before grabbing four spoons and four forks. He placed them beside his small stack of bowls before turning to go after the glasses. It was when he turned around that he realized Reggie was looking at him and his cheeks felt a little warm.

It was hard trying to ignore the flush in his cheeks but he did his best. Carefully he moved past her, once again doing his best not to touch her. He grunted in response to her question, grabbing two glasses in one hand and two in the other. There wasn't much he could really say as the newest member of this household and he would rather the other three talked it out. The journey past Reggie for the final time seemed his hardest trial as he had to pass behind her in such a way that he faced her even as she faced away from him. He didn't know where to look. He couldn't look at Reggie, and he didn't want to meet the eyes of the two others in the room. Looking up at the crown molding on the far wall solved this problem. And then he was past and he could relax.

He clunked the glasses down, sighing as quietly as he could. At least the fetching was done. He turned his back to the table and leaned against it. It wasn't hard work by any stretch, but he needed a moment to steady his thoughts for a minute.

Can’t say I was too thrilled to see Reggie comin’ up through the small holler to fetch me; then again, she didn’t look too happy ‘bout it neither. She motioned for me to follow and I did so wordlessly, hustlin’ a few long strides to match my steps with hers, successfully avoidin’ any kind of reprimand for not goin’ along.

Was a shame that we were all brought into the kitchen when it was such a nice day outside. Cold, but nice; perfect for working in the fields. I unzip my jacket and give a small acknowledging nod toward Oscar and Fabian. Since they’d been roped into this gathering as well, I can only imagine what Reggie’s about to be goin’ on about. She puts bread and a knife in front of me, already lockin’ me in place with another chore. ”I wa’t’n’t plannin’ on leavin’,” I say defensively, albeit kinda playfully. As she then starts talking to Oscar, I pick up the knife and start sawin’ slices for the dinner. Honestly, anything that ain’t heated beans in a can is worth waiting for. I’ll sit around for hours waiting for fresh soup if it means I can have some.

Come t’ think of it, I’ve been incredibly fortunate over the years that Mace has allowed me to work for him. Before this job, I’s just a thief, stealin’ what I could so that my sister and I could at least eat. Beans and canned food was the main dish for weeks, sometimes even months, and both of us had grown real tired of it quick. Our parents didn’t care too much what we did ‘n’ they never left anything for us, so you can figure how mad I got each time they came home empty handed. Were Sis and I ever important to them? Dunno. Can’t say for sure either way. The rancher I started t’ work for gave me enough payment so I could make up for what my parents failed at.

Somehow I’s able to appeal to Mace’s kind side, and that was just where my luck made a turn for the better. I left the poor ol’ rancher for the victor; the pay’s incredible. Now I don’t have to steal to live—‘cept for art supplies. That’s too expensive for me to buy, so I gotta still somehow get those for Sis. Fortunately I’ve been alright so far with snatchin’ up colored pencils and notebooks. It’s made me wonder, though, since I’ve already been whipped once for a crime, do they whip again the second time?

The slices start pilin’ up and Reggie’s goin’ on about how Mace is leaving for Two again. Not any new news, but I’m curious when she mentions the Lowe’s porch needin’ a fix. ”Mmm—“ Having jus’ put a loose chunk of bread in my mouth, I pause and wait for her to finish before offerin’ up . ”If no one else wants to do it, I’ll fix their porch. Don’t mind.” The knife slices clean through the last square of bread. ”There’s also a tree ‘bout to fall right on the fence over where you came ‘n’ got me. I’s tryin’ to figure a way to bring it down without wreckin’ anything.” After a moment I turn my attention to where Oscar had gone off to set the table. ”S’pose you got a few hours sometime soon t’ help me bring it down, Oscar?”
