Desperation does something to people.

Our house was made of broken wood and broken dreams. Mom had always said that we should've taken our chances when they presented themselves, but that Dad was a greedy greedy man. And as I think back on it now, I realize that my Mother's soul was composed of the bitterness of the ocean salts, and the same greed that she had chastised my Father for.

I remember watching the waves of the ocean crash against the rocks and thinking of all these dumb metaphors for how the waves broke and spliced as the rocks tore through them. And I remember my eyes flitting back and forth trying to count the amount of people that walked by on my way home.

I remember there being a feast on the table but none of it tasting good.

I'm thirteen when I wake up in darkness.

I was a freak show.

My mother cried into my sleeves and I cried with her, because I couldn't see the twisted pain she had on her face and the lies that swam in her eyes.

Bruised knees and broken dreams, after a while my mother sent me out to the streets with a blanket and rusty, rickety cup and all my ambitions.

And I sat, wallowing in my own bitterness, listening to the sound of the waves crashing and breaking against the rocks and listening to the droves of people walk by me as if I was nothing.

Because I was nothing but a pile of bones and skin with a cup with three coins that had gone clink when they fell into it.

And I remember thinking how ironic it was that no one saw the boy that could not see.

I could hear the starvation and smell the frustration in my mother's voice. She told me to sell it as if blindness had been something i'd picked up from a clothing store on my way home. She told me to make people feel like they wanted to help me.

I hated her like I hated way people stepped on my feet instead of going around me.

She sent me out with the same rusty cup and the same blanket.

But I didn't come back that night.

Her fingers were warm and comforting as they slid under my chin and lifted my head up.

"What's your name?" She asked, with a voice like steel wool.

I didn't even respond, just lowered my head and shook the cup in my hands, listening to the single coin inside clink against the sides as I waited for her to leave.

I felt the cup rip from my hands and heard it clatter against the sidewalk as she tossed it aside.

"You're blind, aren't you?"

After too long I nodded.

She opened my hands and put a napkin with hot food in one and a bottle of water in the other, and said nothing as I blinked back tears and devoured the food.

The waves crashing against the rocks seemed louder as she asked me "Whats your name, boy?".

And I heard a symphony of footsteps and hushed whispers as I responded.

"Lee."

"Lee what?"

"Just Lee, my mom never took up another last name after my Dad died."

She asked tough questions, personal questions. And at some points it felt more like an interrogation than a conversation with a stranger.

But still, she made me feel like a person.

And whereas i'd spent the last three months walking on beams and flying on trapezes just for coins in a cup, she let me speak freely.

She left me with a bag of coins and for the first time since i'd gone blind I openly cried.

She came back day after day, and day after day refused to answer who she was.

But she put food in my hands, and water down my throat and as the days dragged on I could feel my face becoming fatter and my body becoming warmer. She was my guardian angel, and every day I felt the beat of her wings against me as she sat beside me.

"Lee, how did you go blind?"

I felt like the fat had slipped from my face and my body had become ice as my blood ran cold.

And there was threatening silence between us, and for a moment I thought she had left, because all I could hear were waves crashing against rocks.

She took my hand in hers and squeezed it.

"I woke up blind one day." I said slowly, as if the words hurt.

"You, woke up blind?" I heard doubt in her voice and for a few moments I felt bitterness in my soul that she didn't believe me.

"...Yeah."

I gulp.

"Lee, what did you eat before that?"

"What did I eat?"

"Yes, Lee."

"Fish and bread, usually we just had bread, but Mom had both that night-"

"Fish and bread"

"Lee, did it taste funny?"

I had been so confused.

"It...it tasted weird but I ate it anyways. We were starving...why?"

She sighed, and I was halfway through asking again before she cut me off.

"Go home, Lee. Bring something valuable tomorrow, okay? Something that means something to you."

And she left me in my own confusion.

I scooped up sand from the beach in a bottle and brought it with me the next day.

It was a mental map, each step memorized enough that I hardly even needed a broken walking stick anymore.

She was waiting for me.

"You didn't bring anything?"

"I brought sand from the beach. I didn't really have anything else."

She took my hand and led me away from that spot, she led me away from my home and away from everything I had once known. She led me away from the bed where I had gone blind and the couch where my mother had cried into my sleeve.

"Where the fuck are we going?" I asked through half steps and stumbles.

She didn't answer.

I ripped digit from digit and stumbled back into a man, who cursed me under his breath before moving.

"I said, where are we going."

It was the first time i'd ever been angry at her, at whoever she was.

She sighed again, and led me to a bench.

"Your mother wasn't a good woman, Lee. Or at least, I don't think-"

"What?"

"I think your mother poisoned you. Probably to get sympathy from people when you were begging and-"

"No, you're wrong."

Because I truly believed she had been wrong, that my mother would never, never ever do something like that to her own son.

And she put a hand on my shoulder and explained everything as I shook with anger and resentment.

"I want to kill her." I finally said.

"That will do nothing. She's already dying."

"Then what am I supposed to do? Die with her?"

She took my hand in hers and we listened to the sounds of footsteps before she spoke.

"I have a family who wants to take you in."

My jaw dropped slightly.

It closed.

"Are they going to poison me too."

"No, but it won't be easy with us- them."

She let me take my time before I nodded.

________

She took me to a house that was too open, where I could feel the air in the walls and could hear my voice echo through it.

And she introduced me to a man that had a big, husky voice, that hurt my ears every time she spoke.

She squeezed my hand once before opening the door and leaving. I heard the waves crash through the door before I was left with the man.

"...What was her name?"

I had waited far too long to ask.

"Not important. But come, you look like a bag of sticks. You need to eat."

We started training the next day and fuck, she was right, it wasn't easy.

There were days when I ended with bruises and gashes littering my body, and there were days when I didn't get up from the ground.

He told me there was a fire inside of me, that he hadn't adopted me out of sympathy, he'd adopted me to nurture it.

I almost hated him, but every day we'd end by sitting on the last step with a cigarette in my mouth.

He'd chuckle every time I choked on the smoke.

________

Practice made perfect.

They told me that I was a fire that burnt everything it touched, a prodigy that didn't need sight to win.

"How did you know I was behind you"

"You breathed."

Lee Ionia, it had a certain ring to it.

I stopped asking what her name was because he always refused to tell me, instead, I just called her my angel.

A light in darkness, how fucking symbolic.
