I couldn't eat.

I wanted to say it was because I was too excited for what was to come, that the idea of being the games had my adrenaline pumping so harshly that food was the last thing on my mind, but in truth my confusion was what left me stabbing pieces of lamb over and over again with my fork, dipping them in the specially made sauce once, twice, three times, then drawing on the surface of a once sparkly clean plate.

I was only half-aware of the conversations occurring around me, and most of the time I only responded when someone repeated my name a few times. ("Right, Lex? Lex..?" "Oh, uh, right. Sorry.")

Once everyone else was finished, I took it as permission to leave and immediately headed to my room. I might have only had a little over a week left of my life. Maybe less than a week. I might have been dead before my parents even got their next paycheck, and that knowledge kept clawing at the inside of my throat and leaving it sore and ragged.

I thought perhaps a shower would help get my mind off of things, but after battling with the wall of buttons and knobs for about five minutes, I ended up showering under boiling hot green water that felt like silk as it danced down my body and smelled of taffy. (It reminded me of home, in all honesty.)

I had just stepped out, wrapped from the waist down in a towel when the knock sounded at my door. "Uh, come in?" I called, walking across the room to search through the drawers for something in my size. "Be warned, though, I'm hardly decent at the moment."
