P E T R I F I E D

I've always been afraid of the unknown, of jumping to do things that you'll end up regretting; I was never told that mistakes were a part of life, and I thought it was bad. Mistakes are bad, and if you make one you're a failure. I try not to make mistakes; key word is 'try'. I can't help it. I'm a natural failure, a walking disaster.

It starts when people make comments on me: "Petri can't do anything right," or "Petri just tripped...again." Followed by fits of laughter and stares my way which I try to avoid because I don't want to let it get to me.

The bottom line is, I'm scared. I'm scared of pretty much everything; failure, fear, loss, death, humiliation. My parents died when I was ten; five years ago now. I wonder if they look down on me now and shake their heads in disappointment just like everyone else does.

After they died, I never used my last name again. Instead everyone nicknamed me Petri Fied. It was a joke on how anxious I always am. Ridiculous, really.

I'm worried about my imperfections, my face, my spots, my weird teeth, my body, everything. I'm scared about being rejected by people, and pushed out of their lives.

No, I'm not scared - I'm petrified.
