Reapings were nothing more than tossing pennies into the wishing well in hopes that Duncan’s name would be called once again. No saving grace to be found behind Tweed’s gentle touch, besides, he sure as hell wouldn’t find a savior in me. Lost without Owen found a third time we stood shoulder to shoulder, his attention swayed as his eyes stayed locked on the bright red head of hair that stood beside Andromeda. Eras to my right and Noah somewhere behind we locked into formation of misfits and misdemeanors; no stand out leader in the pack.

I longed for my younger brother’s demise like I longed to tear the boards from Owen’s coffin like staring into his bones would bring flesh back to them—goddamn a kingdom fell at his burial.

The scratches at my neck from Tweed’s nails serve the reminder that I was not the victim in this war, that in her own words we were all brittle bones disintegrating, but I had it worst and I’d be damned if I didn’t.

“Noah Bowers.”

I have it worst and I’ll be damned if I don’t.

Slumped shoulders and thin lips he stands on the stage with the posture of a century lived and I can do nothing but sigh at the lack of answer—he’s always been just some kind of collapsed, the true opposite of Owen’s open nature.

But the path stays the same and so does my pace, two steps at a time and I’m standing at the door to the justice building shoving Duncan back towards home—he’ll do nothing but cry anyway.

“Duncan, there’s nothing for you to say.” Annoyance rolling to the edges of my syllables I place a firm hand on his shoulder only to have it pushed aside.

“He’s family to me too, Cody.” Biting words of a broken man leave me scoffing as I turn my back to his frame.

“You really think you have family anymore, Duncan?”

I have it worst and I’ll be damned if I don’t.

Hallways pass and steps resound but still I cannot find the sorrow I’m looking for before I’m led through those heavy, wooden doors. Five minute limits but I still can cross boundaries, one step past the threshold and there’s nothing to say but, “Duncan sends his regards.”

I buried my regards in Owen’s coffin, and only wanted to dig them up once.

"Duncan sends his regards."

I bit my tongue; shipped off like cattle. That's where I lay in life, my entire future planned, wasted, to nothing more than two weeks. Where I stand now, I have no say - did I ever? What is the difference here, coal soaked hands, cotton sticking to arm hair and pricking myself on wheels, it's all over. My entire everything, it's all gone and- I think I'm okay with this.

Only two weeks, only two more weeks of pretending I exist. That my pale fingers and clean skin and hairy stomach, that any of my being still ever existed, it's okay. It's easier, simpler, and I always loved that in a sense. Trading forty years at best for a stranger in my door and two more weeks, only, I'm not a factory boy anymore.

Maybe it's raining in my head or my heart, but two weeks won't be so bad.

"Is there any reasonin' behind that," I whisper, surly. I'm standing alone, stripped of my background - no mother, no father, no factory and no Bailey. Only Noah, for now. What am I? My heart pounds, my hands sweat as I look my cousin in the face - Cody, who am I? I scrape my teeth, bit my tongue and swallow, eyebrows furrowed. "Why isn't m'sister here?"

Simple didn’t begin to cover Noah Bowers.

He is tied to the pieces that hold the world together, nuts and bolts and live wire, but he isn’t simple. He is the blueprint to a family still burying Owen’s coffin—the written plan to a broken family, “Is there any reasonin’ behind that?” Reason was his name he just happened to spell it Noah, four letters tied to those six just rearrange it one time more and you’re set. Simplicity tied to reason was a dangerous game of common sense that most people denied the chance to play.

“Why isn’t m’sister here?” Caught between bitter sorrow and ironic empathy I was, the last face he’d see from eight—goddamn I’m proud to be that disappointment; worst of all he was the end of a family I never wanted to have, Eras would fall apart like he always did, Duncan would be excluded from a name he still carried, and Andromeda would rejoice amidst the silence.

Bowers-Fox never struck a chord of symphony anyhow, not since Owen’s coffin came back with two nails bent out of place and the tombstone cracked down the quarter line. Here lies—words trailing into nothing, Noah’d be the same one less body crowding the house when the air was too heavy for everyone to deal with their sorrows alone, but I always did.

I was caught between the walls that housed the last remnants of my brother, six feet under and he’d be the same, buried by a sister who didn’t even have the heart to show—she’s smarter than I am.

I watch the expression shift across his face as shadows liter his feet, painted with darkness he was just like the rest of us, blood turning to black and I am drowning, “If I knew where the rest of our family was it would have to mean that I cared about them,” words trailing I watch for anger, but I find none, “I managed to find you, though.”

There's smoke in my lifeline, and a crick in my breathing. I can't breathe, why is my sister? Would it be easier with her here or not, I don't know, but it wouldn't be worse than Cody. This isn't family, this isn't my departure - this is dying. It's so simple, five letters and two syllables and a singular inhale, exhale, it doesn't scare me. It'll swallow me whole and replace my existence, that small and unmeaningful thing, I'll be the abyss.

I won't be Noah.

“If I knew where the rest of our family was it would have to mean that I cared about them,” and it's reassuring. Meaningless or unexistent, which is worse if there even is, in the beating of my chest - ti-tock, ti-tock, ti-tock - lays the only thing I know. Blood. Family and smoke, and my mother is holding my hand as I hold my own together - "I managed to find you, though." Who am I, Cody?

What is the beating of my heart worth if there is no life, if that ever growing light bleeds white noise; what is a life of white noise worth? Our talk is dead, automatized speech at best, there is no family in this room, no family in the melting of my veins more than Bailey, and mother who's holding my hand and father who is pressing my shoulder and the nuts and bolts in my pockets and Cody is none of the above. He died with Owen, compassion in a soul lost.

(And so will I.)

"Where's the good n'that? Our blood's runnin' thin, Cody, I'm no Bailey and neither 're you." There is no smoke between us, he is no family of mine and I'm no fighter either; I'm not Bailey, and I'm not Noah. Not forever, "tell Bailey I'nderstand, I wouldn't've came for her, neither."

“Where’s the good n’that? Our blood’s runnin’ thin, Cody, I’m no Bailey and neither ‘re you.” Sweat on my palms and I’m bleeding out, thinner than water seeping through the cracks in my skin like the dam is about to let loose its hold of water—one mental barrier from overflowing and I have no words. “Tell Bailey I’nderstand, I wouldn’t’ve came for her neither.” Simple slurs into nothing he was, spouting goodbyes like a last will and testament, as if he had anything to pass to us save the nuts and bolts in his pocket—he’d rather be buried with them anyway.

Blueprint to my cousin—the instructions are blurring with each passing second that he fades further from the standard, one step from a failure he couldn’t define and I’d be left to erase the mistakes.

Family didn’t thicken with the passing time, not with the blood already seeping from the wounds I couldn’t stitch if it still lingered within my heart to care. This was not a goodbye—it never was to begin with, I suppose. This was a reading of last wills, of testaments to the nothing he’d leave behind.

One look at my cousin and it’s as if he expects this time we’ve spent together to be a turning point in both of our hatred for the family that is etched upon our ribs. This time we’ve spent together does nothing more than vacate the idea that blood relations hold the standard of excellence and dedication that one would expect, laying two rest two birds with one stone—this was not goodbye.

“You say that as if I’ll see her before you do.” Bailey, Eras, Andromeda—what were they other than names crafted on a family tree that had been struck by lightning one time too many to be standing?
