I am the small terror. Not the kind people are afraid of though. The kind people are being afraid of befriending because I will not be able to help them murder others. Because I am weak and small. I am the one the big bad wolf would come and find first to gobble up whole. It was the same in district eight. I was always the one who was picked last in all games. Always the one assigned to the unimportant jobs. I let my arms fall to my sides and sigh as I look for somewhere to train. I then let all those thoughts leave my head. Who am I kidding? Why should I even train at all. So will die anyways and why not enjoy the short time I had to live by not working my butt off. I find a little column to sit up against between the camouflage station and the knot tying station. I face the plant identification and I see that no one as is there. I just wish Preston were here with me. He would tell me everything would be all right and it was just a dream. Just a stupid terrifying dream.

	Elya spent half of the time allotted for training making her rounds, sizing up the competition and systematically intimidating them. The latter came easy, eyepatch or no. While there were more careers than usual this year — meat heads so far up their own assholes that they couldn't see past what they'd just had for breakfast — the rest were an interesting mix. Take, for example, the small girl from District 8. Twelve years old — or thirteen maybe — and a volunteer for no one in particular. A volunteer, after she'd seen who she was up against. Elya. Circe. Orion. Olivia. The District Ones. Nat Krigel, Gunner La Torre. "You couldn't possibly have thought that you'd stand half a chance." Elya sat down on top of the plants table, right across from the girl. Absently, she sifted through the flora. Willow bark, thyme, cinchona, camomile. She picked a dandelion out of the pile, twirling it between her thumb and forefinger. "So what is it, then?" She looked up, fixing her iron-banded eye on the little girl. *"You want to tell me all about how you're not scared of me? How you may be small, but you're oh-so-brave?"* She began plucking the tufts from the flower, one by one, and tossing them to the ground. "Heart doesn't win the Hunger Games."

It seems as though the big bad wolf has finally caught up with me, and had caught up in the form of a girl. A terrifying girl with an eyepatch to scare everyone around her. Including me. Particularly me. It was as if she just came over to scare me. To torture me into giving up. She hasn't done her job well enough, because I had given up the moment I saw the reaping in district two. I had just come to save another life. I knew I wouldn't survive. I move my head towards my knees and curled them closer to my body. I try to ignore her, but towards the end of the wolf from two's taunts I say in my small quiet voice, "Please just leave me alone." I curl my body closer together and I press my back up against the wall even further. I let my sad eyes look down at my knees and try to hold back the tears that threaten to spill out of my green eyes.

	The girl curled up small, as if she was attempting to disappear. "Please just leave me alone," she requested, and for a short moment Elya almost felt bad for her. Almost. With one breath, she blew the remaining tufts off of the dandelion in her hand, and set the bald stem down on the table next to her. She sighed. There was nothing particularly enjoyable about scaring the shit out of a legitimate child who was already on the verge of tears. At best, the one-eyed girl was horrible with kids. They were too emotional and never made any goddamn sense. Elya wasn't about to waste her time trying to figure one out in order to terrify it — not when the girl had already done such a good job of freaking out on her own. And so, she stood to leave. "Get a grip," she advised, firm but not unkindly. "Next time I won't go quite so easy on you. No one else will, either. You don't stand a fraction of an ice cube's chance in hell at so much as surviving the bloodbath as is — you're small, emotional, and weak. As far as I can tell, you've got no skills with weapons, and no skills for survival. All of that, that's just the fact of the matter, and not me being mean. Everyone else has the advantage on you, and I mean everyone. So you don't want to cut your minuscule odds down by trying to fight with tears in your eyes." She shrugged, scooping up a handful of nutmeg and stuffed it in her pocket for later, scanning the room for a target who would be a little bit more of a challenge. As if there was anyone in the whole training center who could be less.

What is the point of trying to fight back? She seems to want to play with her food, and I know she will be going after me first in the blood bath because I am a sheep that I would spin wool from normally. I think of Preston and a few tears roll down my face. I will never see him again because of people like this who will have a fun time killing. To actually bath in blood. I have never been to district two, but I always imagined it as a wonderful place where everyone has enough money to eat and enjoy life while the propaganda from the capitol makes them think this is a game. I wish I could live that life, not think this all was bad. I look up, out of my knees, and before she walks away I say quietly, barely in a whisper, "I knew I was going to die when I came. You don't need to tell me that." I wipe my face with my sleeve then bury my head in my knees, holding back tears. Why did I need to make sure someone else didn't die? And then I smelled something peculiar, I sniffed. Why did I smell nutmeg coming from the girl?/font]

	"I knew I was going to die when I came. You don't need to tell me that." That was something most of the tributes had in common, from the lowest of the low to her brutal brother. Dan would enjoy toying with the crying pipsqueak, but Elya had a hard time being anything but annoyed with the small girl. Messing with her was beneath the practiced career. Elya Johnwayne sighed. "Tell you what," she offered, trying her best to sound warm. The words came out stiff, kindness an alien concept to the stony career girl, but she did her best to sound as genuine as she meant to be. "Come find me during the Games. In the bloodbath, after, whenever. I'll make it so quick you'll hardly feel a thing. Just a pinch —" she put one hand on her own jaw and jerked her head to the side in demonstration "— and then sleep." And then death, she did not say. Perhaps she should have. It wasn't as if — was her name Hope? Elya resisted a snicker at the irony — Hope didn't know. She'd said so herself, and much as she might regret it now, she knew what she was up against. "No blood. No agony. No drawn out suffering," she promised. "That's the best you can hope for." She turned to leave, took two steps away from the regretful mess of a young girl before turning back to face her, single eye offered without the hard iron edge it usually bore. "Think about it, okay?"

I felt like snapping back to the girl. Saying that kindness wasn't her strong suite. She was trying to be kind, I could tell, but her version of kindness was awful. "Come find me during the Games. In the bloodbath, after, whenever. I'll make it so quick you'll hardly feel a thing. Just a pinch and then sleep." For a moment I was actually tempted, but then I thought no. I watched the girl walk away and I thought to myself. I joined the games to save another life, I joined so I could die in place of another. Maybe this is the easiest way to go. But then I thought of Preston, and Eva, and the horrible district eight which could use some food from me winning the games. I don't want to go back to district eight though. I am so confused and conflicted inside. Should I let this wolf kill me or should I just try to survive from the wolf. Now is the time I decide. And I decide to let myself sink so deep into a character with my acting skills, the bad little Lily I will call her, and I will live without knowing.
