All twenty-four of us tributes have been captured by the Capitol's dastardly hand, covered in a mystical substance which glimmers in the light. It's black, so deep and dark that your thoughts escape into it and are never seen again - but there's a dim glisten as you look further, it is faint, but you still keep focused on it and long for it to find you.
In this world, you've got to find it.
We all started dying before the leaves in autumn and the snow in spring, but like them both, we continued to fall. Nothing can save us from the inevitable any more, the games will happen with us included whether we want them to or not. It's sends a chill down my spine which rings around my insides like a worm desperately searching for food. I can't think about what will happen in that arena - I won't let my hopes rise only to have them be cut and killed.
My woeful thoughts seem to be my only company in this training centre today. The usual buzz in this air remains but my silence drags its fingernails down it, scratching it like a layer of skin. It's different, not quite normal and I can't figure out what it is.
I throw the bow and arrow in my hand aside, it landing with a clunk on the stone-cold floor. I notice a few people turn, startled by the noise which seemed to have bounced of all four walls of the room. One doesn't turn however and his lack of movement separates him from the pack. He looks like a lost child in the crowd of faces which only intrigues me so I begin to walk over to him.
He's the boy from district six. One of the few remaining districts which hasn't seen a victor in a while. I remember during last years games, the district felt a draining of energy and hope when Ellexias Versity handed out the worst wishful thinking in years. It must be hard for someone from the district to follow such a bold attempt at snatching the crowd.
His name slips my mind, but it doesn't stop me from crawling up behind him like a dirty insect and speaking aloud.
"How are you finding it here so far?"
I try to keep the conversation reasonably open-ended. I need to see where he takes this so I can base my judgement on his character from it. In my mind, there's two routes he could walk this down. The depressed and hateful attitude which the majority of us seem to have - who can blame us? Or, the response which is nothing but a white lie, bogus and deceitful praise for a place so grim.
I wonder.
