My ankle has nearly doubled in size by the time I've wandered far enough from the harp and the smell of blood and death to allow myself to take a break. My clothing feels damp as the sleet continues to rain? snow? sleet (the sleet is sleeting?) --- whatever the hell the weather is doing, I'm getting soaked and the chill is seeping into my bones.
If I wasn't blessed with a new view every time I turned around I might actually be pissed off. But since the harp and the sword and now the beauty of a vast, wide sea are spread out in front of me, I'm too busy having my breath taken away to get angry.
My beastly friend nudges me from behind and I stumble forward, closer to the edge of the cliffs before me. Fear lashes through my body for a moment as gravity threatens to pull me over the edge, but as soon as I catch balance--- with the wind in my hair and the fresh, ocean air in my lungs --- I let a smile stretch across my face, a momentary fit of laughter catching me off guard. It's only when the gash on my chest starts to ache again that reality slaps me in the face.
I sigh. This isn't a field trip; this is a ritual slaughter.
My beast friend, who hasn't stopped following me since I found him, snorts and rather ungracefully collapses to the ground. He gives his head a shake, his ears flopping and his fur giving off a sparkly substance that disappears as soon as it hits the ground. He's just another piece of this Game they have me playing. It was cruel to use such a being for such evil.
I run my hand over his body, tossing my bag aside and twisting myself to sit against his side. He isn't warm like I had hoped, but he is certainly more comfortable than anything I've ever --- had the pleasure of leaning against before? And the best part about my handsome beast: he didn't seem to mind one bit that I would never say a word. Someone who is finally content to simply listen to my silence.
Beast. That's his name, even if he will never hear me say it. And somehow, as his chest rises and falls in accordance with my own, I know that he knows it's a term of endearment.
Looking back at myself I'm reminded that I'm still a complete mess. I roll up my kilt to take another look at the gash I had wrapped my belt around. The blood was beginning to crust. Good. But I could really use some plants or bandages---
I hadn't noticed it until it hit the ground in front of me, the silver parachutes and the very recognizable shape of--- No way! A violin! I toss my sword aside and lunge for the instruments. It's different than the classical violin I have at home. The dark, twirling frame and the speaker that comes with it tells me this is a top of the line, Capitol-esque electric violin. It feels light as a feather and the elegance of it--- I have to set it back down; I'm not worthy of such a thing.
Next to the speaker and the violin is a folded tapestry. It's soft to the touch and unfolds easily. I shake it out, flip it around, and wonder--- Is this...? If the artistry wasn't so detailed I might not have been able to recognize the scene. But when a District 6 tribute gets so close to winning (like they have for 3 years in a row now), that is when Peacekeepers force citizens to watch closely.
Ellexias Verisity, the 69th Hunger Game's, District 6 female tribute --- third place. She is sitting on the ice throne still with all her limbs attached. At her feet kneels her ally and Victor of the 69th Hunger Games, Katelyn Persimmon. It was when both had made it to final four that scenes like this were played over and over again. Every heart-wrenching moment, every drop of blood, every little bit of interaction the two had ever had was played over and over again so that when Ellexias Verisity bled out in the snow, all that hope that had been flickering in our eyes was crushed tenfold.
The same had happened when the year before with Galaxy. And again the year after with Wyatt. This scene was either meant to make me feel weak or powerful --- it was up to me to decide which one I wanted to be. Powerful? Or weak? I tie the tapestry around my neck so that it drapes over my back like a cape. I won't let this tapestry or the ghosts of past Games make me more of a slave to fear than I already am.
I scoop up the violin and flick the switch on the speaker. Right now, I don't care whether or not this gets me another knife in the chest. I will cut down whoever gets in my way. I have my sword. I have my Beast. I have my music. And I've got the face of strength on my back. No one was going to stop me from living. Not just yet anyway.
So I drag the bow over the strings and let the music dance on the wind.
