~Before The Myths~

Flip.

An Eight of Hearts.

Flip.

A Two of Clubs.

Tension pricks at my neck as my finger's trace the outlines of my two cards. A feeling of apprehension swirls like a storm between myself, the other four seated around the table, and the standing dealer. Card after card is slipped from within the dealer's deck as more and more ambitious moves arise from my opponents.

Flip.

Twenty Three, Busted.

Flip.

Twenty Six, Busted.

Flip.

Twenty, Safe.

Finally the dealer's eyes lay upon myself and my cards. His eyes taunting me like a wolf taunts a lone sheep. Two had already failed but at least I don't have to worry about such a predicament. The highest card I could receive would only give me precisely what I need, 21. Letting out a sigh I gently tap my cards signifying my desire for yet another card. Without even blinking the dealer presents to me what I desire, an Ace. Moans fill my ears as I sit back in my chair and watch the next victim fall before the dealer himself is forced to stop on twenty. For this day it would seem that luck had presented itself on my side, and I had to say it took its damn time about it as well.

A gentle breeze runs like rabbits through my long brown locks as they are sent scuttling across my face. The gentle sound of coins dancing with one another within the confounds of my pockets only make a smirk present itself. Not even the gentle droplets of rain that were now beginning to tumble down from the sky made my warm smile vanish. Water continued to surge from above as I caught passing glances with myself in freshly formed puddles scattered across the earth. For most they would see a well built 145 pound and 5'5 man. Yet what I saw was simply a mask that my true self hid under, the real person who hid beneath the concave blue irises that were planted firmly in my skull.

Memories wafted up from the crevices of my mind as I veered another abandoned corner. Reminiscent cries plagued my ears as the images of a cowardly boy appeared in response. All my life I have been a scared little child, never once did I deserve the skin I wore like a coat. All the natural strength and muscle was wasted on such a weakling like myself. I have never truly been at home in my own body, I have always been unworthy of it in every way. My parents call me a man just as many others do as well but I know what I truly am- a child.

The rain was finally beginning to retreat by the time I pushed my way through my family's front door. Warmth met my face as I wasted no time stripping the sodden clothes from my body. My Mother's voice filled the air as I walked into the active kitchen with supper nearly finished. "How was Jeremy's house?" She asked with a smile on her face and I swiftly revealed the three rolls of quarters I had won proudly. A laugh jumped up from her chest as she flipped one of the metal pieces of money in her hand. "Looks like you finally managed to win." She commented as she returned the quarters to me before telling me to go hide them in my room somewhere before my siblings tried to take them.

Excitement was surging through my body at this point by the time I reached my room and hide my stash secretly beneath one of my old journals. However just as I was preparing to go back down to the kitchen and offer Mother some assistance the sound of my Father's yell pierced my ears. Surely enough the source of the yelling traced back to Navy's room as I watched my Father once again unfairly scream at her. Sorrow filled my chest as each one of our Father's words dug into her skin like sharpened knives. Yet only once Father had stormed away did I make my way to Navy's side and embrace her closely in a hug. She was always so much stronger than I was, but I never wished she would have to face such hardships from our Father. Not to mention he couldn't even refrain from his actions the night before the Sixty Second Hunger Games Reaping? It all just made more and more rage bubble up in my veins as I continued to embrace my sister. Even if Father didn't like her I loved her and that was that.

~The Cursed Days~

Time became much more of nuisance during this day. Visions of Navy still crying in my tight embrace linger attached to my soul. Everything about the way Father treated her confused me. Navy was always so strong and brilliant yet he treated her like a vermin that was infesting his life. As far as I could tell Navy was the exact opposite of a flea riddled beast, she was a warm hearted angel who only wanted the best her family. Even in the light of our Father's treatment towards her she shone brighter than anyone else could ever try to. She found the will to fight from nowhere else other than her impenetrable spirit. Navy was powerful in every aspect of life, a trait I lacked in every aspect of my own. Yet with her in my life I always had someone to look up to, a goal that I could strive for every single waking moment. I only hope that I really can become the man everyone believes myself to be, not just for my sake but for Navy's since she deserves to have someone to always back her up. She deserves someone who is as strong as she is.

A broken sigh rolls out of my slightly pursed lips as I rise from the sheets on my bed and into the chilled morning air. All across the house the sound of stirring life road quietly across the morning mists. Minutes turned to seconds as bathing, eating, and clothing all passed in several blinks of my eyes. Before anytime at all had even dared to roll past I found myself walking through the fear filled streets of District Six. Navy and my brother were silent as we approached the check in. Static raced through the air as Peace Keepers worked together to force the terrified denizens of the district into their proper positions. Pain pricked my finger as I was confirmed as who I claimed to be. Then just before the fierce arms of the peace keepers ripped us all apart I gave Navy and my brother a parting embrace.

The following moments fused together in an unholy symphony as I listened with fear tingling through my every nerve. I could feel the sweat on my brow seeping through my hair as our escort began to open the name of the female tribute. It was in the very next moment when her venomous words struck my ears that the will to remain standing broke beneath me. My knees slammed into the ground as my tears seared across my skin. Seeing her with tears of her own on her face made the stabbing sensation in my chest worsen more and more until finally it reached its climatic crescendo and the doors to the Justice Building sealed around her.

Sleep became all but a myth as the next days dwindling gruelingly on. Remorse riddled the house with its sorrow painted claws as sobs became a normal music. My eyes had never been heavier than in this very moment, I had never been one to watch tv but now it was all I did. I barely ate and I only got a few hours of sleep when my body finally forced itself to faint. However every time I would just wake back up and look right back towards the screen. My life became nothing and Navy became everything. I knew she was strong but I also knew the horrors that the games could conjure up by simply a flick of some Game Maker's fingers. Yet even with the odds stacked up against her I would never give up on her. She was the strongest person I knew so I knew she had to be the one who would live through the hell forsaken lands.

More panic than usual seared through my chest as I nervously sat shaking as the training scores were announced. If Navy was going to get the help I knew she deserved then she had to nail her session...

The number burned brightly across the screen next to my sister's flawless face as my hands clenched into weak fists. The Game Makers had rewarded her with what was literally the dead middle of the flock. I only found myself praying that Sponsors would see just how amazing she was in the games and ignore the rather average score. Then again I still wasn't sure what would happen in the games. For all I know she could be slaughtered in the bloodbath or win the whole damn show. All I knew was how mysterious life could be, and for once I just prayed it would side with my family like it had when I finally one my weekly game of black jack.

~When Myths Became Nightmares~

Time, it all but broke the moment I stumbled out of my bed that morning with sleep deprivation sucking away my life like a ravenous vampire. However no matter how great the loss of hours that tumbled away into the depths of my thoughts I would not allow myself even a single second of sleep. Every minute she spent suffering and afraid I spent suffering and afraid. Every minute the world spent moving on like some big machine without a care I stood anxiously by watching... always watching. This day above all others so far though sent my heart floundering through my chest like an uncontrollable beast. This day unlike any others that dawned before it was one that actually could hold to death of my sister on the end of its ruthless dagger. This day could end with the scarlet rivers of her life draining away only to be confirmed by the ghastly boom of a phantom cannon. This day above all the rest I felt even more like a coward, even more like a person who could do nothing to save the life of someone he loved.

As the calls of my family lie mute against my ears my eyes stayed strained on the screen shimmering across the wall. A countdown flashed as a signal of dying safety and all I could see was her, Naveen. Even in the light of menacing death she looked as radiant as ever. A sense of bravery and determination showered from the concave lenses of her eyes blinding the world with her pure power. Happiness at just being able to see her strength shining so strongly filled my body just as my blood did. Yet my happiness was only a blink of an eye as the treacherous gong sent its scream across the godly arena for all the world to hear. The Sixty Second Hunger Games had begun, and in them my sister stood fighting through the torrential crucible of blood.

Slash after slash and canon after canon I watched unmoving, unfaltering. My fingers flipped a card swiftly all while watching, all while praying. In a way I had forged a new vow with myself, as long as Navy lived to fight another day. As long as the possibility of getting to hold my sister back in my arms was as alive as her beating heart then on this card would continue to flip. If she could endure the pain and sorrow that ruled over the games like a scornful king then I could endure the stamina it took to keep the simple thing twirling. Not to mention the card wad the Queen of Hearts, a card that only Naveen was worthy of representing for she carried the largest heart in all of the world.

I couldn't help myself from beginning to sob as Navy's tears too began to spiral down her tormented cheeks. Her allies all laid dead beneath the rupturing blow of a canon and sunken in an ocean of stolen scarlet life. I could feel my heart ripping as my cowardly body could not reach her, as my pitiful cries could not pierce her ears. She felt all alone, lost in a world that only wanted to devour her life whole. Yet she wasn't alone, I was with her, I would always be with her. However as the card spun on and on she couldn't possibly know. How could she know that her younger brother was watching her every move with a heart shattering along with her own? How could she possibly know just how much he longed to have her back?

Night's cold veil slowly devoured the light of the arena and the sun wished its final farewells to the world surrounding her prison but yet I continued to watch, and I continued to twirl. As she slept I stood guard and watched. At every sound I was alert. Even though I was thousands of miles away I was right there beside her. Watching her, protecting her, but I wasn't. I am a coward, and cowards do nothing but let their sisters get stolen away from them to die. I am the biggest coward of all, yet even as the morning began to come I continued to twirl.

~From Stolen Life To A New Rose~

I still remember the day that it happened so clearly. The feeling of chilling despair that stretched over my pathetic body until I was nothing more than a sorry sack of sadness. I remember the ice filled tears that seared scars into my cheeks as their acidic nature burned my defeated will. Never within a single moment of my life had I felt so much like a failure. Never within all the years I spent wandering District Six had I felt like an unworthy human. Never had I ever felt so much of a waste of space, so much of a waste of life. However, even though my mind wished for a world without myself I would not allow my own hands to kill my beating heart. Already had the world lost its brightest star, I could not allow myself to fade and bring her glimmering message of strength down with me. It was then in that moment that more sore and bleeding fingers finally let the card flutter to the floor.

I can still recall the bitter taste of death that swirled in the vile spit of my throat as I let my depeleted body fall helplessly to the ground beside the card. In one brutal war with the boy from Nine Naveen's life was stolen and in that time I felt my own slipping as well. I can remember the world changed so quickly after the fall of her bright star shimmering soul. Everyone treated my family and I like wounded animals but they didn't understand. When animals are hurt and they are cornered by the monstrosities of the world they lash out ten times stronger and become a brand new threat of their own. And that was precisely the transformation I under went.

From the darkness that transpired from my sister's death I found the power I needed to use my wings to take flight into the world she experienced every day. I pushed myself harder than I had ever done in the past. I spent countless hours training while working in various heavy lifting jobs. Then in the shadows of night I stepped up my reputation in the land of cards as I found myself now in the gambling world. One in which I have to say I have learned to master quite well. In fact, most nights I end up heading back home with more money than I started with. In truth though I never let my mind goal slip for even just a second. Everyday I am alive I go on living the same way she did, confident and kind. No matter what, I will never let the world forget my sister.
