You've never considered what a life without your brother would be like.

Sure, the topic has been breached many times in your sixteen years. With the threat of the Games, the hazards of a less than ideal workplace, and the overall difficulties of living in a poor District, there's always the shadow of tragedy looming over your heads, ever threatening to separate the two of you. Permanently.

But you've always been an optimist at heart. No matter what sort of doom every adult and their goldfish would preach, you've always been the one to think positively. Two hour extension to the work day? No problem, more time to bond with the other workers over your shared hatred of the manager. It's raining when you're walking home from work? At least it isn't acid. You suddenly got reaped for the Hunger Games? Hey, maybe you can become District Eight's first victor in over twenty years.

Besides, Leo has been around for literally your entire life. Why would things ever be any different?

Your parents say that the two of you were born only six minutes apart. That almost immediately after you exited the womb after your brother, that the two of you were inseparable. And indeed, for the next twelve years, it seemed, you fulfilled every last bit of the classic twin bond stereotype. Leo wasn't just your older brother; growing up, he was your closest friend as well.

In your opinion, the one strange thing about having an identical twin was the striking physical similarities between yourselves. You both have the same sleek black hair, the same dark eyes, the same facial structure. It was almost like living with a walking mirror on occasion. In Leo, you actually had a living, breathing carbon copy as to which you could evaluate yourself. Sure, you personally think your jawline could be a bit more defined, and maybe your eyebrows could be just a bit thinner, but otherwise, you're pretty happy with your looks.

Your physique is also lacking, in your opinion, but coming from a poorer district you aren't all that surprised. You're a bit on the small side, standing at a modest five feet eight inches and weighing approximately one hundred twenty five pounds. You might not have much in the way of physique, but you know for a fact you're better nourished than half of the district. Having four people bringing in a steady income to a family has helped with that immensely.

You and Leo started working at the textile factory when you were twelve. You learned the trade quickly, with assistance from both older workers and your parents, who were rather high up in the worker ranks. Even after you got transferred to working on Peacekeeper outfits, a section overseen by what must be the crankiest person in District Eight, your spirits were high, and the income worth the toil.

It was here that your compassion was fully brought into light, as was your empathy to the less fortunate. You and Leo didn't always work at the same table, and during these periods of time you mingled with and learned the stories of other workers. Many were the same age as you were, but from significantly worse off backgrounds. Instead of being the pretentious, snobbish jerk that so many others with your luck prided in being, you chose compassion instead, becoming friends with many of the other kids and even occasionally giving them a share of your profits.

Your parents chastise such an act, but you know it's more for concern than actual disdain for your actions. Concern that in your naivety, you will forget to care about yourself as well. Sure, you may not be drowning in money yourself, but few in this day and age know the feeling of being able to help others, even at the cost of your own well being. You hear the whispers from familiar and stranger alike that such a trait will eventually get you killed, but you take such comments with a grain of salt. After all, you would gladly sacrifice yourself for someone you cared about.

You are sixteen now. You and your twin are senior members in your factory station, acting as as a sort of shielf for new, scared, timid workers from the overseer. Your names are entered into the reaping pool more times every year, yet you still think that you have little to worry about. After all, you have never had to sign up for tesserae, and there are hundreds of other kids in the district who could be chosen instead of either of you. And besides, you only have three more years of such a worry, and then you're free to build your life however you want.

It's you and Leo, standing together against the world. What could possibly go wrong?

Finished yo. Note that I wrote the majority of this in an hour as I kinda want to go to bed at a semi-reasonable hour so I may or may not have included all of the necessities. If I didn't, just please let me know and I will fix it asap^^.
