"Where's Kieran?"

You speak softly when a boy enters, his face a mask of pity. You take in his face: blue eyes, dark hair. The other boy doesn't answer, setting down instead a tray of food that wipes all brotherly concern from your mind. You reach for the tray and dig in with fingers that remember all too well what it means to not hold food in your hands. The ghost of gnawing pain in your stomach forces the food into your mouth faster than you can chew, and a hand touches yours.

Startled, you look up at a boy. Blue eyes, dark hair. He gives you a sad smile.

"Slow down. You'll choke."

His words make sense, and you swallow your next first bite. Funny, you don't have an appetite for all the days you remember starving. But there must not have been a lot of food in the first place; the plate is almost empty. You put it aside carefully, knowing that your father hated when you didn't care for your things.

Your brother must be hungry too. You look around, but you see only a boy with blue eyes and dark hair, a bed not yet made, a small dresser with a lamp and a well-worn book besides it. You pick up the book and flip it open where a stubby pencil lies between its pages. The writing is yours but the words and scrambled and new.
