Thunk.

The sound of metal entering solid wood resonated across the bare room, and Cynthia smiled.

"Perfect." she said aloud, eyeing the fruits of her labors critically. "Now all I need is a rumpled suit and a pair of spectacles."

The girl chuckled at the thought. She didn't really understand why so many of her peers preferred partying as opposed to training in the late hours. Sure, it was fun and all, but it got old after a while.

Besides, having a whole training room to herself? That was loads more fun than getting drunk and dancing. Even the lone overseer was snoozing, the needs of the body overcoming his dedication to his job.

Yes, it certainly was perfect.

The girl took a deep breath, before grasping the hilt of the weapon in a strong two-handed grip. With one quick tug, metal slid away from wood, leaving a sizable mark in the otherwise pristine dummy's neck.

The girl eyed the dummy again, her face suddenly contorted in a mask of cold hatred. Letting out a grunt of effort, she swung a second time.

Thunk.

And Cynthia swore loudly as the blade sunk into the solid wood of the shoulder as opposed to the fragile, cloven pillar that made up the dummy's neck.

This time, there was no pause. The girl yanked the blade out of the mannequin with such ferocity that even the weighted pedestal couldn't prevent it from shifting.

The girl glanced at the expressionless face with undisguised hatred, her brown eyes boring a metaphorical hole through its head.

Even here, on the other side of town, he continued to mock her.

"Fuck you, father." The blonde girl spat.

Thunk.

And although I wasn't losing my mind
It was a chorus so sublime

She walks through the cold night with her hair pressed neatly into a braid, eyes transfixed on the road ahead.

Balance.

Every moment was a trainable one, at least to her, and she practiced keeping her steps high and light, balancing and walking without making a sound.

Careers often forgot to practice the small things, but she knew they could mean life or death. With precise steps and no sound but her breath gliding through the chilly air, she made her way towards the training center with the hope that it would be entirely empty. See, the other Careers hardly even knew she trained, let alone that she was competent. They liked to call her miss priss and a weakling just because she held her head high and spoke kind words to people.

In truth, Carrica Tinkham could cut a man to shreds.

(But it was better off that nobody knew that.)

Hence the late hours, the sleepless nights, the cuts and bruises in the morning. She liked the training center best when it felt like hers, so she was more than a little disappointed that the building wasn't empty when she entered it.

For a moment, she stood in the doorway, but after a second's consideration she slowly walked over to the other Career, leaning against the wall, just watching.
