She weaves her fingers lightly through the hair of her best friend, drinking in the ease of it all. Her hands have held a heavy heart between the beating of her pulse and grasped at weapons designed for killing for far too many years. Yet here, with her, everything is simpler, slower, kinder. There are no expectations for greatness or sternness. In Addison's company, Pyrite is allowed to be human. And it's hard to let go and relax in a world where all you've got is barely enough, but the girl sitting still below her with a soft face and softer hair makes it easier. To her, friendship is enough. Loyalty is enough. Simply being in her company is all that Pyrite needs.

Her hands reach the final strands of dark hair and weave a band around the end, looking at her slightly-crooked, sad looking attempt at a braid. In Addison's room the world is brighter, fuller, and the quality of her handiwork won't determine her worth. In the world of Addison and Pyrite and two bedrooms separated by a window, life is bliss and free of boys and parents and terrors of outside. It's all her steel skin and frozen heart need.

Because the hardest of hearts can be soften by the kindest of souls.
