WALKING OUT TO THE DARK, GOING OUT A

DIFFERENT PATH, LEAD BY A BEATING HEART

Delicate, trembling fingers trail along an old chest in our mothers' room. They locked our adoption papers within the chest - perhaps for safe keeping, unless there was a secret they wanted so desperately to tuck into the shadows.

But wonder has gotten the best of me before and I wish to know of my blood, of who left my twin and I in a basket on the Eckhart's doorstep. We have heard the story over and over again - our mothers repeated it to us until their voices became old records playing on repeat, spinning endlessly.

In the study, dim golden light from the lamps kisses our skin and shadows creep across our faces. There is something grim here - I feel it, cold in my stomach and dark in my veins.

"The keys are in the desk drawer," I tell Elettra. "Do you want to be the one to open the chest?"

I cross over to my mother's desk and pull open the drawer. Inside it is a clutter, but my eyes are quick to find what I am looking for.

The keys dangle between my fingers.

you ran into the night from all you had
found your self a path upon the ground

A lone chest sits on the bed between us, ornate, yet simple, and never has such a chest been a focus until now. It might as well have an anvil on top of it, as is the weight of truth, right at this moment. I don't know what it'll say, but it will have our names in their, certificates of ourselves, to show that Elvaina and I are real, and belong in this world.

I don't hear her words the moment that she stands, I just feel the distance grow larger. I could see her in my eyes, and could just reach out, and touch her, but she could be on one of the twinkling stars above. I feel my head shake, and it was probably to a question, but I'm underwater, overbeared by everything, so I missed it.

And she turns, key in hand. I take a breath.

you ran into the night, you cant be found

She only draws in a breath and shakes her head, a silent no. She does not take the key I offered, so I saunter towards the chest -

click.

One turn of a key, and it unlocks. Everything - wonder, possibilities, the truth - expands at my fingertips, and the impact of it all, slamming into me like a great stone, shakes me to the core. My fingers claw at the top of the chest, pulling it open with a long, eerie groan.

I peer inside, and my eyes are met by not a single file of adoption documents, but a sea of papers. From adoption records to newspapers - it is all spread out before me.

On the cover of one of the newspapers, there is a photo of a pair of outlaws, leaning up against a building with rifles pressed against their flanks. The headline in bold, black ink, screams at me.

ENZO AND ROSIE STRIKE AGAIN.

My hand reaches for the paper and draws it out of the depths of the chest, and I hold it up to illuminate it in the dim golden light that bathes the room for Elettra to see.

"What is this?" I ask into a void, my words barely more than a whisper.

ELETTRA ECKHART

Knowing the truth isn't always the best thing. I've lived a happy life, despite knowing I am different. A screaming mess of paper's headlines, and folders holding everything I, and my sister, are, right down to the itinerary. Headlines pull me into a time, before my living memory remembers it. Elvaina holds the paper, the world to see it. The truth of our beginnings.

"What is this?" A question upon Elvaina's lips, echo'd inside the voice of my head. We've always been a mirror to each other, each action an opposite in the other. Yet it was as silent as a whisper, wonderment and fear. We're the children of a criminal duo, greater than the world has ever seen. No more are we innocent Eckhart's; we are ruined and guilty.

"Are they.. real?" A shaken head of disbelief is all I feel as the words leave my lips. "Are we guilty?"

Taking a step towards the chest, as if that's going to make it any less false, I look inside its' boundary, and greeted with a mixture of interest and horror. VAULT RAIDED BY THE FAMOUS DUO. And a shift of paper under my fingers is loud, untouched since we became Eckhart's. And there it catches my eye.

ENZO AND ROSIE ELIMINATED IN SHOOTOUT WITH PEACEKEEPERS.

"I thought we were told they died in an accident," as I held up the delicate headline. "They must be wrong...?"

No. The word rings in my head eerily. It is like someone has thrown a punch at me with iron plates on their knuckles. No, no, no, no.

My sister shakes her head. But I do not, no, no, no, every muscle in my body has gone rigid and I am frozen. "Are they . . . real?" Elettra asks. It is a question I know I have the answer to, but it feels like a lie. It is a heavy burden to bear. "Are we guilty?"

Yes, we are, if black blood is a crime.

She moves closer to the chest, tracing her eyes along the headlines. My gaze intrudes at first, straining into the chest to peer at the headlines in bold. But they sting, and I can't look any longer. Even if I could withstand the pain, I don't want to look.

"I thought they died in an accident," she says. "They must be wrong . . . ?" And foolishly, my eyes cannot resist the wonder that claws at me, and my gaze averts to the bold letters on the paper.

ENZO AND ROSIE ELIMINATED IN SHOOTOUT WITH PEACEKEEPERS.

I flinch at the words.

(No, no, no, nononononono.)

I look away, but my eyes only cast down upon another article- OUTLAW LOVERS DEAD. When I reach out to touch it, caution turns my hands to stone, like the newspaper is a viper coiling in aggression. (It may as well be.)

"We live on a web of lies," I spit.

ELETTRA ECKHART

Lies are something that hurts more than anything, more so than a weapon slowly slicing fingers off hands. And I am drowning in them. Elvaina speaks the thoughts ricocheting inside my head, "We live on a web of lies," the anger spitting out like fire. And we are the prey and not the spider that owns it. Anywhere I look is just pure horror, and I finally realise the truth is always best hidden.

I never wanted to know this. I was happy with my falsity of what I knew. Not this. I wanted to know that what we were told was right, and not that it was completely wrong, that I was the half of the blackened blood that remained from a family of crime. And in the corner of my eyes, I see headlines. Everywhere I look are stacks of headlines. Headlines, headlines, headlines. Each one a notch driving slowly into my heart.

I was expecting for them to be lovely, to be parents that I'd be proud of having, upset of not knowing. Instead there is a mark in a tree, heart and E+R engraved within. A poster, with two faces, unknown, yet familiar inside a mirror's frame, WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE, $10,000. I hold up the almost crispy paper, yellowed from the shut up darkness.

"So that's mom and dad, framed up in a common place," the words come, sneering into the deadened silence of truth.

This cannot be my legacy.

I thought it was golden, I thought it was great, not bloodstained and shamed; this cannot be my legacy. Not gunshots and wanted posters and black hearts- no, this cannot be what is in my blood.

But it is.

My sister picks up another paper- WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE, $10,000. Before I can bring myself to look away, I see their faces. And I flinch: our faces match theirs. I want to shake my head and back away and slam the chest shut and scream that this cannot be our legacy- but it is. The truth burns, but it is an agony we must bear upon our backs, or they will be even more broken.

"So that's mom and dad, framed up in a common place," Elettra says. Yeah. So that's mom and dad.

(I ask myself the question in my head-

"Will we ever be like our parents?"

I already have the answer, for me.

"Never."

But even this does not reassure me- when we grow up, our hearts d i e.)

"We are bred from monsters," I say quietly, and my words crack upon contact with the air. I regret the words the moment I speak them- I cannot leave them to hang in the air, bleeding, without at least trying to patch them up with feeble bandages. "They may be in our blood, but I'm in yours, and you're in mine."

I'm not sure I believe even myself.

ELETTRA ECKHART

Who knew that parents could be familiar, yet their faces unknown to me, and Elvaina until moments ago. "We are bred from monsters," her voice said strongly, "They may be in our blood, but I'm in yours, and you're in mine." And her words strike true, and together we are strong. No matter what they did, no matter what, we are that. Formed through the blood of evil, and yet, we do not follow it.

But had they not died, I doubt even that would have been the case.

The blood of evil tempts however, I want to know the whole truth. But truth requires the forgetting of the falsity, and the falsity is the entire life that I built up, and I don't want to bring in the destruction until I know what they did. And so I plunge my fingers into the fire's of hell, that we were left. Looking for an ounce of good inside a world of evil.

And I feel another chest inside, cold, yet warm at the same time. "Elvaina.." I warn her, "There's another chest inside." And I pull it out, solid metal, and undented. It's an untouched piece of history, fingerprints intact. My mind questions, are they mom or dad's?, and place it next to the massive one. "Want to turn the key again, El?"

It is a warning, an omen, that falls from her lips. "Elvaina . . ." she starts. And that's when I see it, just beneath the folds of another newspaper. Another chest, this time, smaller. "There's another chest inside."

I blink.

"Want to turn the key again, El?" she tempts.

I shouldn't-
but I do.

Click, and history spills out before us like a wine stain on a white tablecloth. Inside, there are fragments of a past I am afraid to uncover. Fear clutches me, entwines me in its steel steel claws, and yet I pry the lid open. It creaks- another warning, another omen. But I am more curious than manically terrified.

If curiosity killed the cat, I will surely be dead before the day is done.

Inside, there are a pair of matching pistols, crossed in an X. They rest upon a letter encased in a envelope, yellowed like jaundiced flesh. My fingers reach out to pull it out from under the crossed guns, and when I do, I can hear the bullets pierce the air, and I can see the crimson stains pour down like rain.

I hold the letter up to the golden light for Elettra's eyes to pry upon.

This is our legacy.

The waiting for the lid to open is a nightmare of potential horrors of what we could find. It could change our lives, or we could ignore it, like its some extravagant lie, an abject joke that's too tender to be taken as such. Yet I doubt it. And inside, I see the glint of metal, and I feel my heart copies the hardness of it. The star crossed lovers guns crossed, protecting the truth of their children. It's almost romantic, were it not both of them were dead, and long since gone.

All either of them are is a collection of ink on an ageing paper that could be full of falsities that only seek to entice. And below the guns holds a letter, since removed and held lightly between Elvaina's fingers, like it would explode into a million pieces; and taking us with it. That letter is us, and it is personal. Nothing that anyone could do would mean that they could read it first. I'd rather pick up the guns that held initials of my parents and fire them. Become a carbon copy of them.

The front of the letter held one thing, a heart, cursive and beautiful, and two letters. E and E. No more are we observers of a story so extreme that it must be true. We are the conclusion of an adventure since forgotten. I step towards my parter, and touch the letter between my fingers. "Mind if I do the honours, El?"

I am at war with myself.

Within the shelter of the envelope lies the truth, and yet half of me does not want to know, while the other half practically demands it. They cross swords and meet fists, but fire cannot be fought with fire; I cannot win or lose against myself.

Elettra takes the letter from my hands and says, "Mind if I do the honors, El?" I would do it myself, but I fear I would stare off into space while trying to catch my breath and rip the letter in two unintentionally, out of anxiety and sheer terror. The truth is no easy thing to swallow. It is not benevolence, but it is not malice, either. The truth defies the concept of good and evil. The truth bows to not light nor darkness- it is its very own.

I try to speak, try to say, "Go ahead," but the words catch like a thorn in my throat and I find myself nearly choking trying to speak. So I give into the silence and just nod my head, and watch the folds of the envelope and Elettra's hands intently.

The truth will unravel, and so will I.
