Back off, I'll take you on,

Headstrong, to take on anyone.

If there is one thing that you think you would change about yourself, it would probably be your name.

To be more specific, your surname. You like the name Nathaniel alright - it has a nice ring to it, and is fairly unique. But your surname, shared with what seems like every kid your age around home? Yeah, that is definitely not unique.

You've never really met a lot of your extended family, actually. Your father, the parent that passed on both the name and heritage to you, was never close with his siblings and cousins, and as a result, you never were either. When you were a small child, you heard little about your many cousins, aunts, and uncles. Your mother on the other hand had little in the range of family to talk about or visit. As the only child of an only child, her destiny was passed along to you after she nearly died having you. Your early days, consequently, generated little interaction with family outside of your parents, and instead was a rather lonely one.

As you grew older and started attending school, you slowly started putting the pieces together. Little clues, such as the girl who somehow had the same last name as you in your class, or the not-quite-discreet sigh of your instructor ("Another Summit? Dear Ripred.") sprang out at every corner. But any and every attempt to breach the topic with your father was shot down faster than a tribute with a knife penetrating her eye.

From then on, you were forbidden to talk to the girl, or anyone else that happened to shared your name.

And so, your inquisitive young mind got to work. You'd always been the curious type as a kid, asking questions about every little detail of whatever was going on, and your thirst for knowledge remained. No little scrap of information was too insignificant, no tiny bit of knowledge too unimportant. You were a curious kid that grew into a curious older kid that grew into an inquisitive, if still curious, teenager.

Coupled with a determined, stubborn mindset, nothing could evade your mind for long. It was one of several things about you that your parents chastised ("Such stubbornness will get you killed someday!"), but you didn't care. You would bend as far as needed, be as persistent as possible, until the other person had no choice but to crumble and divulge what they knew. Your parents were worthy opponents, standing strong against your continued onslaught of curiosity, but even they were not invincible.

It was one fine summer morning that your father finally cracked.

You were twelve, and to this day you remember it as clearly as if had happened yesterday. Your father, stressed out by a rough night's sleep and the upcoming reaping, your first, had spilled the beans. How the Summits were one of the largest families in Panem, much less District Seven. How, no, it was not sheer coincidence that half the kids around school seemed to have the last name of you ad your family.

After that deception, your relationship with your parents never really healed.

Now, it made sense why virtually every Summit kid had the same dark hair as yourself. How you spotted facial features that matched your own fairly sharp jawbone, the same green eyes that sparkled and turned almost blue in the sun.

And you hated it. Hated your similarity to your father, who seemed to have passed down every physical trait possible to you. Hated the dark hair and sharp facial features that matched a good number of your suddenly discovered cousins. The same traits that, in your mind, took away your individuality.

The incident woke some sort of rebellious spirit within you, to the point where you almost volunteered yourself for the Games that very week. Only the last second realization that you were a small, prepubescent twelve year old that hadn't yet hit his growth spurt stopped you in your tracks, and your survival instinct took over.

At the age of fourteen, you started hanging out with what many would describe as the "delinquent" clique of your school. In reality, you quickly found out that they were simply a group of boys and girls from troubled households, not unlike yourself. ("Yeah, we get the occasional Summit from time to time.") one boy had commented. ("With the sheer number of you, it's only natural that one of you will clash with your parents at some point or another.")

That day, you received your most prized possession, a silver necklace.

("It's how we keep an eye out for our own.") the boy had said, pulling the collar of his shirt down to reveal a matching one. (The adults think we're simply a gang of kids up to no good. But we're so much more than that. We're a family here.)

It wasn't an easy life. You lost many friends over the course of the next four years to different reasons. Accidents on the job. Some deadly virus or infection.

Suicide.

But it also had its perks. It helped you develop and grow as a person. For the first time, you had people at your back that you trusted with your life. For the first time, you explored the fascinating world of romance. You even met and befriended a couple of your cousins along the way; other Summit kids that had somehow fallen out with their parents.

Yes, you may not have had the easiest life, but it's been a rewarding one. At eighteen, you have mostly avoided the malnutrition that claimed the lives of several kids growing up. You tower over the majority of kids your age at an impressive six feet two inches tall, your body lean and muscular from repeated physical activity in the woods.

Your relationship with your parents never really healed. Even today, conversations are brief and awkward, and rarely last long.

But that doesn't matter, for you have another family ready and waiting.

You may be a Summit, but you are also so much more.

I know that you are wrong,

And this is not where you belong.
