For you, life has been a series of trials by fire.

Since the very beginning, it was almost as if life had it out for you. Though you don't remember it yourself, you were told that you were struggling from the beginning, as it took your mother almost thirty hours to successfully give birth to you. On top of tht, you were a very sickly baby, and that you weren't expected to survive infancy. For days, your parents watched anxiously as your tiny body fought desperately to cling to life.

Finally, after two long, agonizing weeks, you finally purged the mysterious blight from your body, and resumed life like a shaky motor struggling to start.

The struggle was only beginning, however, as the very next year, tragedy struck your family. While giving birth to your younger sister one cold winter's night, your mother's body, already wracked from malnutrition and the difficulties of your birth, unexpectedly gave out.

You heard that it wasn't your fault, that your mother stubbornly insisted on having two children, on breaking the streak of only children that ran in her family. That she if she was strong enough to survive yours, then she was strong enough to survive having two.

She was wrong.

Your father did not take her death well. Your youth prevented you from remembering, but you've heard that in the days after the tragedy, it was almost like something had vanished from him. That as days turned into weeks turned into months, he slowly wasted away, becoming a shadow of his former self.

You were not quite two years old when he put the bullet through his brain.

Your father had always had a mantra, you had heard. That no matter how difficult things got, if you put on a smile, a brave face, and just kept fighting on, then you would be unstoppable. Nothing would be able to hurt you.

He was wrong.

You were eventually sent to and raised by your next closest relatives, your maternal grandparents. As you and your sister grew older, you were eventually told the story and the details of your parents and their fate. It broke you a little inside, to find out that you had inadvertently brought great harm and misfortune on your parents of all people, but you emerged from the grieving a stronger, better person.

Life in the Seam was never easy to begin with, but you took your father's mantra to heart, always being optimistic about your prospects. Although your sister was often a pessimist, you never wavered from your belief. It even surprised you, to an extent, that a boy who had suffered so much at such a young age could always be cheery and hopeful about their own prospects.

Your cheery nature transitioned to interpersonal connections as well. To you, there was nothing more enjoyable than watching someone else's face light up, watch their lips curve in a smile and their eyes sparkle with glee. Social interaction was an art to you, one that came almost as naturally as the skin on your bones. Ever the optimist, you took great pride in conveying your energy to other, less fortunate souls around the district.

Combined with your past and your natural optimism, you have a sort of natural determination to keep moving forward and living life one day at a time. Sure, you may occasionally miss a meal or three and you may dislike your job in the coal mines with a passion, but through it all you have an almost stubborn tendency to remain positive. After all, no matter how happy someone can be, they can fall apart in an instant if they're not careful. And after hearing about your father's fate, you're determined not to let yourself slip down the same path.

Your difficult life has had a toll on your features. You stand at an average five feet ten inches, but on your heaviest days you weigh a measly 130 pounds. You might not have been damaged by working endlessly in the mines yet, but you're not particularly powerful, either. You just....are, and if there's one thing you could change about yourself it would be to have a more healthy physique, which is unfortunately a rather tall order for a resident of the twelfth district.

In terms of looks, you take mostly after your mother. You have dark, curly hair that you (mostly) keep cropped short, skin the color of brown sugar, and dark, chocolate brown eyes. You have a rather sharp, prominent jawline, thin eyebrows, and are rarely seen without a smile on your face.

Life has thrown many curveballs at you already, and you have only just become a man. But not all has gone poorly for you; after all, you've survived through six of your seven reaping opportunities, you still have your sister and your grandparents, and your cheerful spirit has yet to be broken.

Life is good.
